lets say you want to measure the current through a light bulb. now there are two options. either you will connect the ammeter in series or in parallel with the light bulb. 1. remember ammeter measures that current that passes through it.. if you connect an ammeter in parallel with the light bulb, then current will divide, some current will go to light bulb and other to ammeter. lets say initially when the ammeter was not connected, current through the light bulb was 5 A, now when you connect ammeter, current will divide, lets say 3 A goes to light and 2 A to ammeter, ammeter will show that current that passes through it, so it will show 2A, hence it will give wrong value. 2. if you connect it in series, then in series we know that current remains same, so same current will flow through ammeter and light bulb, so will give you exact current. lets if 5 A was flowing in absence of ammeter, in presence of it the same 5 A will flow through it if its resistance is pretty low. that's why we keep its resistance low and use a shunt

no we cannot. these are dc measuring devices. the reason is that if you use ac current, the coil will not rotate in one particular direction. it will rotate lets say clockwise first, but as the current reverses its direction as it is ac, coil will rotate in the other direction, now anti-clock wise. it will not come to equilibrium never. and you will not get your pointer to stay for you at a point. leave a comment if you understood

Sir what is effect if ammeter is connected in parallel to a circuit?
lets say you want to measure the current through a light bulb.
now there are two options. either you will connect the ammeter in series or in parallel with the light bulb.
1. remember ammeter measures that current that passes through it.. if you connect an ammeter in parallel with the light bulb, then current will divide, some current will go to light bulb and other to ammeter. lets say initially when the ammeter was not connected, current through the light bulb was 5 A, now when you connect ammeter, current will divide, lets say 3 A goes to light and 2 A to ammeter, ammeter will show that current that passes through it, so it will show 2A, hence it will give wrong value.

shunt is a small resistance i.e. it has very low resistance. its a broad term. definite value is not know. its a relative measure.
