- "The King of Japanese Independent Distillers," Ichiro Akuto presents a high-end blend of his own whiskey and others sourced from all over the world.
Meanwhile, Rex and Daniel discuss infinity bottles and physical ticks.
Thanks to Raul Martinez for the bottle! Cheers ya MB!
Our small whisky club had a Japanese whisky tasting evening a while back. Among the ones we tasted were some famous ones like Hibiki 17 and Yamasaki 18. At the end of the evening we agreed on one thing, the Ichiro’s world blend was our favorite.
First of all, we all knew this Daniel you were the last one to find out lol, secondly I love the fact that you ended the review talking internalizing stress and the physical reaction of it then quickly transitioned to “dry week! just a way to make sure you have no dependencies or problems...” lol
Hi guys, my name is Aleksandar, I'm from Serbia. I like to follow your channel. I have been doing homebrewing for 18 years. 8 months ago, with a few friends, I finally made a HERMS brewing system with a capacity of 50 liters (10 gallons), and today I tested a distillation pot for the first time, modeled on the "Still it" channel. That means I will soon start distilling my own whiskey. :) Only one commercial whiskey "Two Doves" is produced in my country, but almost all world brands are available for purchase. I will try to send you one bottle of "Two Doves" for RWF. Keep rocking!
this is my favorite whisky in a highball. HIGHLY recommend you guys try it!
Whats the best one for a whiskey sour? Thats my favorite drink.

No way! I just finished a bottle of Ichiro's Malt & Grain with some friends last night. That "earthy" note you found I attributed to assuming it was a fairly young whiskey, as there's no age statement and Japanese whiskey is kinda flying off the shelves these days. And it does indeed taste better the more you get into it. Lovely stuff and reasonably priced where I live. May just lower your right shoulder ;-)
Guys because of you I am inspired of collecting whiskey. Never had boring moments with you guys. You two are awesome. I may be a newbie, but because of your channel I have learned a lot of things about whiskey. Great show guys. Keep doing great videos.
Don’t, for the love of god, take a shot every time Daniel lifts his shoulder.
Damn it. I found the WT and Vault a couple months ago. I have been going through all the old Tribe videos and after watching this I now can not un-see Daniel's shoulder tick. (Glass shattering - A How I Met Your Mother reference). I am ruined.................... O great Whisk(e)y Spirits help poor Daniel! All this and the video of breaking Daniel I need a drink. Carry on you MB's.
Really enjoyed my bottle.....what it smelled like and how it tasted was very surprising. Will buy again.......love your channel.
scherenschnitte is a common folk art here in Pennsylvania Dutch country!
Dry week idea sounds good. Thanks.
I've noticed 'the tic' and thought it was often combined with a neck scrunch or neck stretch I always wondered if there are underlying neck problems. Maybe you keep tension in your neck and the tic helps relax it. I am surprised that with all the shenanigans over the years no one has done a Daniel impersonation because I think if you master the tic and the hard g you're 80% there.
Ah Dry Week. Probably a good idea with the Rona stress out there. I'm with you. See you guys on the other side.
Just picked up the Hakushu 12 and the Yamazaki 12. And got Nikka from the barrel and the Taketsuru Pure Malt on the shelf. So I'm good on anymore Japanese whisky for awhile, unless someone's selling the card series for $100 a bottle 😆
First taste of Laphroaig 10 I was sold on Islay! Had to try Lagavulin 16 twice to appreciate it. When I found Ardbeg 10 from watching your channel, I was in love. Love the channel. Join Harvest Host so I can bring my Van to the Whisk(e)y Trail, talk the others into it also. Would love to make it to Texas and run the trail.
Daniel I've watched a ton of videos on both channels and I don't think the tick was all that noticeable. I typically noticed only when you raise the glass. I actually just thought you were making a more dramatic raising motion because thats what professional tasters do. Lol
To get rid of your tic Daniel, try drinking left handed and then both shoulders will go up and match Rex when he does the shoulder thing.
I was also going to suggest, as an experiment have Daniel and Rex switch sides for a month and see if it gets better or moves to his other shoulder. He seems to use his hands to talk quite a bit, but since he's been standing next to a shelf of whiskey for every one of these videos for years it might be that the tick is his mind's way of subconsciously keeping himself in check and not knocking everything over :-)
REX MOOOOONNNNNNTTHHH
I actually have the same tick. Happens so often when I'm writing or doing something with intense focus. Has actually been happening for like 15 years so don't feel weird about it.
"I'll save it until the end" is the equivalent to the morning news teasing "this product is the most deadly thing in your house, find out what it is on the 10pm news". Lol
Dry week is on my birthday. 🤯🤯🤯. Looks like I’ll be celebrating later. Dry week has become a very important part of my whiskey experience.
I searched for this yesterday Haha crazy, bought this for the father in law after visiting japan in October
And now in the outro all I can see is Daniel raising his shoulder all the time.
Oh,
and I love the Quarterly Challenge concept. But I was wondering If actually doing the opposite, would be a viable alternative, for those of us that aren't too worried about over indulgence?
For example, I live within, less than, a 10 minutes walk to an LCBO (liquor store), and a large number of bars, and I'll go a month or two(sometimes more) without so much as a beer. By choice.
So I thought maybe fellow followers that are the same could take "Dry Week", and make it a *"Wet Week"*
(mind out of the gutter guys)
And have a daily drink (or two) for that week? (without going into excess of course)
I drive for a living, so I don't drink at all for weeks on end. I could get behind this on my banked week every few months.
3:57 that's synergy, if I've ever seen some
Keep up the awesome work guys, wish I could become an OG MB but I'm broke and Italian.
As im getting more and more into whiskey....im glad i found this bottle
Hi Dan & Rex, I think the paper cut outs your talking about is called paper toil or toiling.
I didn’t find this whiskey particularly appealing it seems. May have to give it a revisit if I come across it again.
My tasting notes:
A grassy, minty, and floral nose, although it is quite alcohol forward. Light in flavour with peach and pear for fruit. Herbal and citrus notes with honey for sweetness. Slight oak which builds in the finish.
P.S. My birthday is on the 14th, so a dry week sounds perfect before a night of gallivanting through the isles of Scotland through taste alone (given that’s the only way to gallivant during a stage 4 lockdown).
perfect! I start my Vacation on the 15th right after Dry Week.
I recently tried Ichiro's at my local whiskey bar, and it is now on my short list of bottles to buy if I ever find one. Sadly, even being in Japan, I can't find it in the shops.
look online
@@acelee632 Amazon has it of course, but I prefer to buy from the local shops when I can.
New Drinking Game:
Every time that Rex looks at the camera and says "Hey..." or "Oh..."
I have the same tic as Daniel, but I figured his was the same as mine - an old shoulder injury that you constantly have to stretch out.
This reminds me of that one Seinfeld episode
where George acquires a nervous tick
I agree love the dry weeks could not have come at a more stressful time :) I always forget to do the challenge... I've asked before in other videos but any chance you could sell you'alls whiskey on flavor id order it I would love to support you guys.
I blended some whiskey, Its Jameson black Barrel and Canadian Club 100% RYE , I like it
Dry week ends on the 14th....
My 31st birthday on the 18th..... I can live with that.
You might be talking about Papel Picado. It’s typically a Mexican traditional paper banner.
When you guys get the chance if you didn't see it already on NHK world channel a show called "Rising" Chichibu Whisky. It's all about the making and the owner that you guys mentioned.
Hi guys. Con kelly here. Love the show. What is the podium you are using for your bar top.
Japanese it literally the easiest language in the world to pronounce. a=ah, i=ee, u=oo, e=eh, o=oh Unlike English, the vowel sounds never change.
Smoking and smoky scotch relationship is an interesting idea. I didn't really like scotch before Ardbeg and I smoke cigars.
Good one glass per person, thank you your friend, Andrew
I have 6 bottles of this in my collection, along with the full "Leaves" 46% (Hanyu spirit content bottles), and the "On The Way" sets.
I'm not a smoker, but I loved Islay Scotch from the first sip. But then, I do like a good campfire, so there may be an association.
When I smoke a cigar or pipe with peaty whiskey, I can pick out flavors behind the peat. I've never had them double down. But, I can begin to out out the more delicate notes that can get buried by the smoke.
What have done?!? I can't unsee the nervous tick!!!
Had a bunch of stress the past couple years with my job and picked up a similar "tick" in my elbow. Always kind of flexing my right elbow. Definitely annoying.
Good morning to all the magnificent bastards, I just joined the Tribe and this is my first post. I’d like to commemorate my first comment with an anecdote. The UA-cam watchdog algorithm decided to show me an ad for a “gentleman’s” monthly subscription box, one of the items emphasized from the box was and I quote “whiskey aging staves that turn Bad whiskey into Good whiskey” I became entranced and long story short I signed duo to receive these magical staves and then went to buy the cheapest whiskey in the most plastic of bottles with the most plastic of screw in caps. Call me Midas as all the bottom shelves I touch turn to gold. Obviously I’m joking, I didn’t subscribe to the box, I love the content and the banter. Keep it up.
I always figured it was from an old sports injury, or a drumming injury, like repetitive strain.
Lol I noticed his shoulder after only watching a few episodes... I then began to tell mates about his shoulder, now they cannot unsee it 😂😂😂
my wife said she noticed it on the first video she's seen. It is something she does when she gets stressed out also. cheers
And here I just figured I was the only MB that didn't know why he did that with his shoulder.
Got to get behind a kit again Daniel to work out that stress!
Cosmic Bunghole!!!!
ori/gami = folding+paper, kiri/gami = cutting+paper
Hey, I'm working on a large, 3 liter, infinity bottle. Since air is bad for whiskey can I use Argon (I do a lot of welding) to push out the air or do you suggest another gas???
Ralfy has a video on gassing whiskey
@@marcwhiskey I'll look it up, thanks
I don't drink during the week...soooo should I start on the weekdays and continue until your next dry week?
Anybody remember who said they were going to build a new podium for them? I work for a company that makes leather goods and would love to add a nice leather base.
Emma got the Laphroaig back up on the wall lol
Morning Gentlemen.
if you look for it, you can taste each element in there. minty bourbon, grainy scotch, buttery irish...it's all in there
Definitely have noticed the shoulder lift so many times before 🤣
I like the just straight "No" from Rex after Daniel said "you know."
Yup. Noticed. Along time ago. Thought it was a habit but it’s all good. I turn my head as a tick and my 1 year old picked it up watching me as a habit with me. That’s when my wife said “stop babe” haha
RIP to that last comment, which they completely forgot about once Daniel revealed his tic!
Good morning fellow Magnificent Bastards!
11pm where I'm at, but hi!
I dont pair a cigar or pipe tobacco.
I like to pair with my favorite strains, most par horribly.
The the one that pairs best so far is Buffalo trace. What say you?
I do not smoke at all, and I loved Laphroig from day one.
What website has the option to send in whisky? Or is it just like buying 1 and mailing it?
Is the other thing that you insist on removing ALL the foil from every bottle you open?
I was a graffiti writer for many years and i had this yesterday it smelt exactly like a montana spray paint. Its not a bad whiskey by any means but me personally. I get way too riminded of paint. It’s nobodys fault. Just my brain making a connection
best whiskey i have ever had was ichiro 8 of hearts
Hmmm...i have not found that pipe tobacco smoking yields an easier time getting into peat. I used to be a tobacconist & smoked a pipe for years, but I still was immediately put off by light peat & had to slowly work into appreciating it.
Daniel just said he has the clap
Of course my birthday is August 8th. Can I steal one drink?
how long has the subscribe sign been upside down ???
I always thought Daniel's tick was on account of nosing a plethora of whiskeys. Start using the left hand to nose!
Scary Movie Reference of Daniel, "This is my strong hand 🤣🤣" ...
I think simple solution for your tick would be change the hand to hold your drink
Kirigami = Cut paper. I've created this kind of art myself. No folding.
I have given this as a gift to two different Japanese guys to let them know there are other good Japanese Whiskies besides Nikka and Suntory.
To anyone who's sent a bottle of whiskey to these two: how did you ship it, or did you just drop it off?
I haven't sent anything yet, but would probably drop it off as an excuse to go around to other Texas distilleries. Can't get a lot of unique US stuff in Canada
One more week and you’re gonna look like inspector Cleuseau’s Chief!
Good stuff coming out of Chichibu for sure.
Cheers 🥃
- Patrick
Not mulch, or cut grass, maybe green or damp hay, like just after a summer shower, before the sun comes out
Emma snuck the Laphroaig in again :D
I started out by putting 1 tsp of each in.
Alright small lesson in Japanese.....A E I O U.....sounds like AH, EH, E, EEW, O
Getting notes of origami on this one
i cant unsee the tick :'D
I'm doing my dry week right now.
I think they're called silhouettes Daniel
The best stress reliever in the World..........Blow something up.
Ask anyone that's done it. Military Guys, Miners, anyone.
Your in Texas, you can get Tanerite and a rifle, go for it.
you guys need to switch sides and stand in each others spot. Maybe working with Rex is the cause of the tick. I will try to do Dry week with yall.
Kirigami?
Burning leaves, trash, and fighting forest fires helps prepare you for the Islay experience too.
OMG Daniel, I see what you mean. Now, I see myself just looking for your right shoulder to move up. 😱
One of the best Baseball Players of all time now he is making Whiskey!? Is there anything this man can't do?
Different Ichiro
Ichiro denotes "first son" in Japanese. It used to be very common to name sons with names that indicated their order of birth. Japanese culture followed primogeniture, so order of birth was significant.
Ichiro: first son
Jiro: second son
Saburo: third son
And so on.
It's not so common these days as families are now much smaller. Three to six kids used to be common. Most families now have one or two - maybe three tops.
Your whiskey experience is great.
Fuck...On the 8th, I am going to a brewery for an event that proceeds go to local animal shelters. So, you're telling me that I should just stay home and let all the doggies and kitties die?! OMG the humanity!! My right shoulder is twitching!!
