    It only took 48 minutes but we got our first dislike! At the end of the day I can only be true to myself and follow what I need to do. In terms of wearing your hair natural there are so many naturals with better skills and abilities than me to follow should you wish and there isn’t much new that I could tell you that you shouldn’t know already. I'm a heat styled natural. I embraced the natural curls and kinks for years but I prefer a heat styling routine. I wash rollerset and flat iron once a month. (It stays straight all month and I work out.) I maintain by using 2-4 bantu knots every night and while I workout. Bc of that, my hair has soft waves the next day. For heat breaks I wear my hair in loose mini twists for 2 months then back to heat styling. I dust my ends on my own but every now and then I'll let my sister who is a licensed cosmologists clip them. My hair is past bra strap, and I have zero straight pieces when reverted while washing. I do what I want with MY hair.

      Also on rainy humid days I leave my hair in a scarf until I'm inside, or I'll just wear a cute headwrap style for the day. I'm in the U.S. and I live in the state of Texas (well known for the heat) and I'm still able to maintain my heat styled hair.

    Listen...in all honesty, dealing with hair shouldn't require the loss of hours...DAYS of life. We do what we do out of vanity and that's ok. Bottom line...do what you need to do to keep your hair healthy and to enhance your confidence. If none of us knew before, I would hope lockdown has given us the appreciation of what's important and enabled us to find ways to achieve those things. So if giving your hair a little heat makes life easier, (I know it does for me) happy days. I love your honesty, your hair looks great, and you're great. Do you and no apologies.👍🏽🙌🏽

      AMEN!!! One of the rare bright sides about this year - we are learning what we truly value and what we don't want to waste our time trying to do. I seriously debated going back to relaxing because my hair has gotten so long that I literally get pulled shoulder, neck and arm muscles and cramping doing it myself. But I love the thickness and don't want to lose it to relaxers (plus some brands inflame my scalp or cause an allergic reaction). I HATE wash-n-goes and I don't like always wearing twist outs, feeling my hair is not getting full moisturization and it's just too time-consuming. I finally gave up the ghost and decided that heat stretching is the best way for me to care for my strands. So I'm going back to what worked when my mother did my hair as a child. Breaking all the natural hair rules!

    I blow dry my hair with each wash. I went to my hairdresser and she said, this is the best your hair has ever done and not much hair shed. All hair types are not made for fully natural no heat styles. In a no heat natural state my hair was extra dry and tangled all the time. Now it's healthy and soft and absorbs oil better and it feels and it feels amazing and my scalp doesn't hurt from having to struggle detangle. I get it sister🙌. I'm natural with some heat and my hair is not heat damaged.

    I suck at doing my natural hair sadly 🤦🏻‍♀️ I suffer from fairy knots, I’m sure every natural deals with this. No matter how much I moisturizer or cut the ends of my hair, they always come back! Blow drying out my natural hair keeps those babies away! And helps retain length too. I don’t flat iron my hair tho, only because my hair likes to revert easily on my roots but I can manage for 2 weeks until the next wash! I use medium heat when blow drying and heat protectant. None of my curls are ruined either. And honestly I’m not a huge fan of super straight hair, I like the look of the blow dried much better, much fuller! ❤️ I’m sick and tired of crazy natural nazi telling us “no heat” do whatever you like, the only thing that matter is healthy hair!

      We are hair twins!!!! I finally gave up avoiding blow outs because I too suffer from fairy knots. My hair is finally responding better to trims because I blow dry (I almost went back to relaxers because the knots nearly drove me insane). My hair actually does not hate heat at all. My mom tried to tell me this, but I was trying to follow the "rules" instead of listening to someone who knows my hair better than anyone. I have NO heat damage and I don't blow it to get it super straight either. When I was relaxed, I never liked my hair bone straight then either. My hair reverts just fine when I choose to wear a twist-out.

  • @WitsNSass

    2020 is the year we do what works for ourselves and stop giving what other people or communities say/think that much weight. I was a "straight natural" before that term became a thing. My mom pressed my hair every 2 weeks until I was 13. She combed my hair every day into ponytails as a child then half up-half down as a tween and braided it in sections every night. My hair was mid-back length without heat damage. I'm a lazy natural with 4c hair, coarse strands and high density, I still don't know what my porosity is and I know longer care. I know what does and does not work for my hair, and I wash every 2-4 weeks, use a heat cap for deep conditioning and either blow out or flat ironed air dried hair once a month. My hair does not flourish unless it is stretched to receive hydration and moisture to my strands, and (not sorry) I'm too lazy to use only non-heat stretching methods or never use heat. I don't heat stretch to bone straight, but even if I did, who CARES? It's my hair. I will no longer apologize for what the "natural hair community" deems "bad" practices and techniques because I know my skill set is average at best, but I still know how to care for my hair.

    • @Virtuenow
      @Virtuenow 3 роки тому

      Since hair porosity deals with your hair's ability to hold water, you can look at your wash day for the answer. Does your hair take a long time to air dry after wash day (like 24 hours or longer)? If so, that's the indicator that your hair is low porosity. IF it dries really fast, like in 2 hours, then it's low porosity. Otherwise, you may just be normal porosity.

What's the point of extremely healthy hair if it prevents you from studying, makes you late to work, makes you work 3x as hard to maintain during exercise, or makes you stay home on the weekends?

      Update, I've decided to become a straight natural again. I loved being relaxed for the convenience (I live a very busy lifestyle) but I prefer the straight (with texture) look on me. However, since I've now experienced being a straight natural AND relaxed, I prefer the volume and overall health of my hair when I was just straightening it. Also I loved being able to just blow dry it and leave it in a fluffy top bun which I can't get being relaxed. Anyhoo I'm currently 15 weeks post and I'm so excited to become a straight natural again.

      @@cynthianjagi3664 Heya, when I was previously a straight natural, my hair never got damaged (as in it wasn't bone straight) but my curls (I have tight coily 4c fine hair) were elongated due to heat use. This time round, I'm doing a lot more research and I believe deep conditioning before every flat iron is key. Plus having a thorough protein/moisture routine. Also, I will be using olaplex no. 3 before I shampoo my hair. I'm sure it is possible to not slightly alter your curl patter with regular heat use, but I highly doubt it. I know the natural hair community tends to fear flat irons, but ask yourself if you're okay with your curls becoming elongated over time. I am, so I'm happy to flat iron regularly. But to answer your question: protein needs to be part of your routine. Do not avoid moisturising your hair due to fear of reversion, your strands still need moisture. So learn how to lightly moisturise your hair while it is straight. Incorporate breaks as well, sometimes I would just blow dry on warm or wear braids. Sorry this is such a long reply :)

    • @thewritergrl
      @thewritergrl 4 роки тому +4

      Love Jones I don’t really believe that hair can be protein sensitive. If you have virgin natural hair (not dyed/no regular heat use) then you only need protein at least every 4-6 weeks. If you use heat regularly, to maintain the integrity of your hair you should use protein at least once a month. I would suggest doing a THOROUGH deep condition after a protein treatment. The best protein treatments I’ve seen are the hydrolysed wheat ones from Green Beauty. You pour this protein into your regular deep conditioner so that you’re getting the protein AND the moisture. I wouldn’t recommend straightening your hair regularly if you don’t plan to incorporate protein into your regimen.

    Hi zig, I have I hope you are OK, especially after your other video. I'm 29 and for 10 years I've had terrible hair loss. It's been tough, and I have other health issues which I'm finally getting treated privately which I think will help my hair grow again. This year I've been committed so I saved to see a trichologist. I really strongly recommend you see a trichologist to get a hair regimen. 90% of black hair advice on youtube is actually incorrect, I tried to use UA-cam for 10 year's to help my hair but actually it made it so much worse. I've connected with other young black girls with hair loss who have said the same thing. An afro hair specialist trichologist will give you the correct regimen and education. I still haven't fixed my hairloss because it's due to internal issues, but since I saw the trichologist my hair is the best it's ever been in 10 years for the state it's in. I actually lost my texture at the back it went straight but it's started to turn into afro hair again and my scalp infections have healed so much. All I do is wash my hair every 4 days and use a peppermint water spray. I don't use any oils, my hair moisturises itself,which I thought was impossible. we've really been miseducated when it comes to afro hair. I could go on, but yeah just a suggestion. People feel straight hair is the easiest option but with the right education from a trichologist not youtube you'll be surprised about how easy it is to look after natural hair. There's 2 afro hair trichologist I can recommend if you are ever interested.

    I completely appreciate the unexpectedness of natural hair. Mine is coarse, extremely coily and fine stranded with it, which makes it challenging to deal with.
    I have been natural for about 18 years. and me and my hair still fight, with some encounters ending with scissors.
    If we can find what works for us it really does make us love our hair. This is a situation that previously black women have not found themselves in without the use of chemicals and I’m all for it.
    If straightening your hair makes your journey a labour of love then keep at it. I see your results.
    Well done. I have been following you for years and I’m always happy to see positive results especially when it is with women in the UK because we do not have access to as much of the hair products, though the situation is improving, as our sisters stateside.

I was thinking about doing the same last year, then changed my mind and didn’t even noticed when. I like blow drying my hair when I’m doing braids outs, but not when I want to style it in a ponytail.

    I gave my niece Heat Damage a few years back while transitioning to natural. Her Damaged hair was beautiful, it appeared relaxed without the negative effects of being dry, brittle, and breaking off. It had just lost its curl pattern. I could still tell where the relaxed ends were as there was a decent amount of breakage at the line of demarcation. Fast Forward 3 years, she just clipped her hair off from Bra Strap length! The journey starts anew! Good Luck in your endeavor!!

    Your hair looking very long and healthy. I always keep my natural curly type 4ab hair stretched. I always blow out on a cool/warm setting b4 flat twist or cornrows as this prevents tangling. Also if I want to wear a bun or ponytail. My hair does not stay straight on superhot setting as always reverts to waves and coils in a few hours so I don't bother otherwise I would occasionally.

    Zig, first I want to say I love your channel, because you are a real one! You do what you want to your hair why because it's your hair period 😊 I have been natural for almost 5 years now and my hair is wavy/curly tailbone length. I do what you are planning to do and have been for years. The only thing different I do is I braid my hair during the summer, then I would straighten every 2 months after, braids, and so forth. While being sure to deep condition or do a hot oil treatment. I also only trim my hair every 3 to 4 months. I know everyone hair is different however, find what works for you. Your hair looks healthy to me and it will flourish 😉

    I feel like I’m about to do the same thing. Almost 2 years natural and I just can’t figure it out. 2 many textures, can’t braid, fine hair doesn’t look good with braid outs or twist outs and so I end up with a puff. Then decided to focus on shape so have cut the back low and trying to do a tapered look. Now growing it out and it looks strange. Rod sets only last a day but those have been ok to do. It’s just a lot of work honestly.

    3.5 years natural and I still cannot style my natural hair. I Can do at most a wash and go and twist out, both take 2hrs if I want the style to look good and last long. I currently put my hair in 6 twists split in half and tied up in two silk scrunchy buns for a week. I don’t touch my hair for 7 days rinse and repeat. I literally look like a little girl lol. I’m still figuring out a bomb routine but I just stick to deep conditioning every wash day and twisting it back up into buns. I want my hair really long so I’m leaving it tf alone. I want straight hair sometimes but I love hot showers and my roots don’t play. My texture is 3c 4a but when comparing it to straight it’s a whole Afro at the roots. My sister is a straight hair natural and her hair looks great. I’m over here struggling lol.

    i think a nice style that is low manipulative when you have time are mini twists. i like them when i had longer hair. i now have a taper. anytime i watch nickibynatural (she straightens and blow dries her hair a lot), i want to have a long hair straight or stretched phase. i never relaxed so i sometimes feel it would be nice to have a straight hair phase. although i probably wouldn't commit. i have to say, being able to cornrow and flat twist opens up the possibilities. could you ask your friend to teach you? anyhow, it's nice to see an update.

    • @Zigandstuff
      @Zigandstuff 4 роки тому +1

      I don't know if i kept it in the video or not (my video was originally 30 mins!) But I don't really like mini twists on myself. As you can see from previous videos I do wear them but again it does take me some time. I could, that's a great suggestion for me to take up once lockdown is over- I'm trying with yt vids but I am a practical learner. My plan is to straighten my hair month one and then month two do a protective style such as box braids (or mini twists like you say) and leave them in for two months before taking down and starting again. Anything low, quick and simple x

    Whenever I straighten my hair (which is around once every year or so), I'm always concerned about getting caught in the rain or humid weather which would always revert my hair back. Are you concerned about that? I dunno about you, but it takes so long for me to blow dry and flat iron my hair, I never want all that work to be for nought.
    Do you get concerned about those things too when your hair is straight? Especially in good ole "sunny" England!

    • @Zigandstuff
      @Zigandstuff 4 роки тому +25

      sensimania it’s so funny because just like you when I was straightening for a style rather than routine I had the same concern. This time around I’m exercising and sweating every day and I don’t worry about the rain! Maybe because I don’t wear it bone straight. I also make sure to use glycerin free serums; that helps keep it straighter x

      John Frieda serum the red one (I tried the blue it’s not as good as the red) and you apply that before blow drying and then a teeny amount again after blow drying just before you straighten. I wore my hair straight on my wedding day at 36 degree heat still stayed straight x

  • @_Kim_Possible
    @_Kim_Possible 4 роки тому

    No judging here. I would like to at least wear straight styles sometimes but any drop of moisture in the air makes my hair a poodle. I get what you mean but there are low maintenance natural hair styles like finger coils, braids, mini twists you can get at a salon just as a suggestion. I would recommend that you use silicone because a lot of really good frizz free/sleek hair serums are full of it. And it’s your hair, you do you. And lots of people stretch their hair to prevent knots.
