Ceramics on old gelcoat, bad idea, a Deckhand's opinion. Try Fire Glaze + instead! Test @ the End

  • Ceramics on a new boat is great but not needed when there's restructure marine polish (Fire Glaze +) On an old boat like these dock boxes, no way that the ceramic will last.
I'm sorry about the "tests" being sold but I can't help that. If you watch to the end, you'll see restructure holding up as well as the best and another ceramic coating.
Before you go bashing me, I was a distributor to all 3.i knew exactly what to do with each to make them last as long as possible. I had all 3 horses in the race. You want an honest opinion? Done.
Ceramics can be great in areas of a boat but without maintaining the boat's surface, they all fail, even my favorite stuff(s).
Most people want a wax that makes their boat shine, last forever. It's called work, time and a little love and pride.
If you can keep your boat clean and protected, it'll reward you with that "cool boater" feeling.
Ceramics are expensive and I see alternatives and absolutely no point on older gelcoat.

If I'm going for perfection in gelcoat, I don't use a ceramic (unless a very new boat) I prefer the ease, cost and reliability of Fire Glaze by RMP. Make sure you get all the oxidation out of the gelcoat, get a great finish, clean and strip the surface and then apply Fire Glaze.

There's a "marine" version but it has the same main ingredient as Fire Glaze, just a different lubricant/carrier solution made to be environment friendly. I find it dries rather fast and as I'm in a hot climate, I use Fire Glaze instead of Restructure Marine Polish. I like their Mirasol spray for all the interior furnishings as well.

I've watched over 10 of your really long videos.
My wife asked me "how could you sit there and watch that?" "It's so boring!"
I told her I'm learning, I'm not watching this for the excitement.
The reason I started watching in the first place was because I bought a bass boat that is badly oxidized, so bad that metal flake comes off on your hand when you wipe the top rail. The sides and botyom of the hull are white with oxidation. After watching hours and hours of your videos I've become inspired to use this process on the sides and bottom. I did about 4ft of a test spot on the port side. It looks awesome. I didn't really know what the actual color of the boat was. Well worth the money and effort. When you wipe the top rail with your hand metal flake comes off on your hand. I did a small test spot on the top rail but the buffing compounds weren't able to bring it back.
I have a question about the top rail. Am I going to have to sand it in order to smooth out the gel coat again? The test patch I did looks really grainy, textured and dull, not like the sides of the hull that are flat and smooth and really shiny.
I know you're not really doing it for me but thanks for these videos, I'm sure they're going to save me a ton of money and most importantly teach me a thing or two.
    Mike

Wow, thanks. Tell the wife, thanks for letting me hold you captive with these vids. I sit through them too. I know that they demand some of your time on this planet.. Sorry?
      Topsides:
Try compound but sometimes, you just do what needs to be done with sandpaper and I know that's not what you want to hear but, you won't be guessing either.
If I was there or was buffing this out I might be able to help but without seeing, or feeling the boat, I don't have a clue what "could" work but I know sanding, will work.
You can try a section. Sand it smooth and try compounding it smoother?
You can sand it smooth and repaint the top? Vinyl wrapping is a thing.
This was a fun message to wake up to. Thanks. Good luck and If you've learned anything from my vids, try stuff, repeat and at some point you'll either have a solution or know what doesn't work.
Also, that boats can be dicks..
The good news is, if the top is that bad, you can't ruin it really, have fun!

I should also mention, one day about a year ago, I was asked a very similar question on a very similar boat. I gave him all the "try Super-Duty and see what happens.." He eventually said he'd tried all the compounds and all the wheels and the 1 thing that worked was using a "clay bar" which is used to pull stuff off paint like sap, spider poop, dirt that's embedded in the paint and most impurities. It generally isn't ever thought of as something to fix a surface. In his case, it was the only thing he used. Now, his boat might have been covered in tree sap from decades under a cottonwood or something and him being new, he didn't know that he wasn't dealing with paint but sap and compound doesn't like to cut soft surfaces so it would generally bounce off of it.
Without being there and drinking your beer, I can only say that if you actually have jeopardized your marital relationship by watching hours of me babble and rant (not entertaining? 😕) JK🤣😂 ; then you should have a pretty good idea of what can be done with just compound. It can be very versatile, powerful and delicate. It's the pencil, be John Wick.
I can help point you in the right direction if you get stuck.
Terry H said I'm the "Dr. House" of gelcoat. I suppose that's fair. He's got a show.. 😢

@@Local_Boydidgood thanks for the replies man. I'll keep you posted with what I try and what worked for me.
If there was a way to do so I'd send you some pictures.
By the way I bought some crappy work pro buffer off Amazon and I'll be sending it back cuz it's really a piece of crap.
Ordered a Dewalt and some "good" buffing pads. I didn't like the synthetic bonnets that tie on. Your foam pads seem to work okay though.
I'm going to look through some of your descriptions to see if there are any product links for pads. I also bought the McGuire's oxidation remover, polish and wax. When I ordered the DeWalt I also ordered that supercut, heavy cut and some flagship.

I can honestly say that out of all the boats I've seen you work on none of them look in as bad of shape as this one.
I have a Larson Delta conic that looks like new because I take care of it. The person I got this bass boat from bought it brand new in '91, used it one season and let it sit uncovered and unused ever since.

You seem to really know your craft. I have a question for you that I hope you can answer. I have a 2021 sportsman 214 bay boat that is ice blue and white. I keep the boat under a covered carport and a boat cover. My gel coat looks pretty good with a few very light scratches. I am wanting to use a light polish to keep it looking good and then seal it with starke hyperhold sealant. I’ve been keeping it sealed with hyperhold since I bought the boat new but wanting to polish some this time before applying. My question is I know you wash with dawn before polishing the boat but do l need to wash the boat again with dawn after the polish before applying the starke hyperhold sealant. Thank you for your time and thanks for the videos. I have learned a bunch.

Nope, it's for cars but people use it for boats. Does it say it's for everything? Gelcoat has pores and is absorbant, car paint isn't you need bespoke materials sadly.

random question but in your experience does the quick connect adapter with pad make the buffer wobble slightly?

    • @Local_Boydidgood
      @Local_Boydidgood  2 роки тому

No the pads are probably wobbly, I've alerted 3M to this many times, they aren't at the point of fixing it.. When the quick connect adapter came out a few years back, the pads were more consistent. They've slacked. In 10 pads, I'll use 2 and return 8 lately. I like the screw-on type too use a spacer nut on the spindle though. 5/8 coarse thread, at least a half inch.
Buy a few pads and use the best one. Take the others back.
If you've used the quick connect adapter with an off-center or wobbly wheel, that could warp the structure of the spindle adapter.
      I'm guessing it's the pad.

That's exactly why I did the dockboxes at the end of this video, yes.
If this was on a permanent dock yes but this was to be used during the Summer and moved between 3 marinas.
Black gelcoat and a new polish, I tried.
Watching to the end, you'll see some evidence of Restructure's Fire Glaze+ lasting beyond Ceramics. It's toward the end though.

      I'll keep you posted.
The only test I can show results, is at the end. You can see that it lasted for a year on an unmaintained dock box. Better than a ceramic. It lasted as well after 2 years.
