- Reacting to my first year law school grades!
Hi everyone!
Y'all... in terms of how this semester felt, and my stress levels and mental state, this was easily one of the worst semesters of my life. Just being isolated because of covid, away from home and taking con law, which still makes my head hurt. I share a lot on this channel, so I thought it'd be helpful to keep sharing how I am doing.
As usual, I won't say too much because I don't want to spoil it, so I'll just say this, grades do not define you and I still have a lot of work to do for this semester!

Sorry that your semester didn't go how you wanted it to be. I hope that 2L will treat you better than 1L because I know that you can do it. Take some time away from the negativity and focus on yourself and do something fun while doing your internship during the summer. You got this girl!! Don't ever give up
Aww thanks so much!! I def have some fun things planned for this summer so I can reset and be fresh for 2L 🥰 hopefully 2L is much less stressful
I'm a fifth year French law student and seing you opening your results is ME every damn time haha. And don't worry, in this uber difficult field, being average is something you should be grateful about lol :))

Hello! This might be a little different from the questions your typically get. Would you recommend taking con law and evidence at the same time?
Average grades do not make *you* average. I think last semester was hard for so many people. I know I was stressed to the max. Thanks for being real with us and I hope you're already feeling better from when you filmed this. 🥰
that's a great way to think about it actually, getting the occasional average result doesn't mean I am average! I am feeling better thanks!! hopefully our fall semesters are not this stressful

I was just watching your video from about a year ago when you were talking about being a background actor and I have a question that I can’t seem to find an answer for but I was thinking what do background actors talk about while shooting? Like in some shows/movies you can see background actors talking to each other and i was just curious on what they were saying.
What do you take to help you study?

Law school grades matter, and they matter a lot--for 10% of the class. If you are in the top ten percent of your class, and preferably also on The Law Review---NOT a "secondary journal"--than you can participate in On Campus Interviews and probably get some offers from large well paying law firms. The very top firms, like Cravath, are extremely grade-conscious, and may only hire those students who are in the top 5 percent of their class, at which point Law Review becomes fairly irrelevant. That said for 9/10 law students, their grades are utterly meaningless. There is no prize for second place in law school. Law schools will use all sorts of tricks to prevent those who are permanently out of the running for a job in Big Law, dishonestly telling disappointed students who didn't make top 10, that "Well, if you're NOT top 10 percent/Law Review but you ARE top 1/3 & Space Law Journal, that's pretty much the same thing!" Please don't fall for those lies. And don't beat yourself about being in the bottom 90 percent of your class, those coveted Big Law gigs only last around 4Y on average anyway, 4 miserable years of 70 hour workweeks.

Haha yes, I chose not to share exact grades, but I said where some of them were on the curve. I didn’t want to be like oh I’m super upset about a grade, it’s not great, but have it end up being a grade that someone was super happy with! I think just sharing how I did relative to the class is good :)

@@LegallyCaroline I think because you said "I'd like to share what I got since I'm sharing my approach to studying" in the beginning we assumed you'd be sharing them. It'd be useful to know when considering to follow your study tips.
Sorry your semester didn’t go how you wanted but it was tough. I hope next semester goes better for you with how you feel throughout and how you do. My worst semesters happen when I overwork myself and feel like I’m in a never ending cycle of stress where I don’t even know what to do to not feel stressed so I know going forward I’m going to have to do what I can to avoid that drowning feeling. I hope you’ve come up with some ways to feel better next semester and are able to relax over the summer. I’ve been binging shows lol, probably won’t be able to do it as much when I start school in the fall.
Omg!! I completely agree, I feel like I was almost drowning this semester and I think it definitely showed in my grades. I def do need to figure out some way to manage that better. And there’s always time to do some binging during school! Lol
You got through 1L, don’t be so hard on yourself. Was 2nd semester a lot more difficult or were you burned out? Can you give a “if I could give 1L a do-over” tips video that would be so helpful.
I think 2nd semester was a little more difficult because I had constitutional law, which was a different approach than what I was used to! And I was definitely burned out, and feeling the impacts of all the pandemic stress/isolation, so a variety of things! And yes, I can definitely do a thoughts on 1l video!!
Don't let this bring you down Caroline! You've succeeded through non-ideal circumstances and you'll come back stronger next year! I know it!. You got this!

Sorry your grades weren’t what you expected! Do you talk about specific grades with your friends or no, is it awkward to talk about bc you’re technically competing?
it really depends on the friends you have! I learned recently that Michigan students has a reputation for not discussing grades with each other, but my friend group has always been chill discussing grades. I think it helps that we're all in different sections, so we're not competing as directly!
What were your grades?
I finished my 2L year in May. It was the absolute hardest year of law school to date, and I did my 1L spring virtually. However, my grades improved quite a bit- so while I won't lie to you and tell you that things get easier, because they simply do not, especially as you factor in law review and other extracurriculars and OCIs, but you adjust and do better as time goes on. It gets harder, but you get better. You have plenty of time to bring your GPA up.

I got my law school grades and yeah… they weren’t too crash hot. Like you said, it’s not the end of the world but dude, does it really dampen your mood.
On top of that - I didn’t get a job I reeeeeally wanted. Ended up crying myself to sleep last night, hahaha (RIP).
As you (and my current boss says) - it is what it is 🥲
Oh no! Totally feel you on the job thing, got rejected from some positions I really wanted this past semester. But I ended up working in a great internship this summer! So while it’s totally fair to be upset about how something didn’t turn out the wait you wanted, it’s good to remember that you can’t do much about it but you can about things in the future!! That’s what I try to tell myself at least haha
