I installed a new HVAC about 3-4 years ago and was told by a contractor that you really don’t need your ducts cleaned. Fast forward, I started itching like crazy. I brought out another contractor which was very thorough but wanted to charge me $850! There was a few small leaks in the ductwork nothing major and one area where the tape from the duct system had come undone which was causing the dirty air from the basement to be sucked up into the system. I would feel this sandy film all over me. Which is why I’m here now to find out how to clean it myself.

The pros have a way that works too, but I have a feeling your way is effective. The blower blows into the existing filter? Sounds good! I only worry that the stiffness of the brush might dislodge one of the duct hose connections if it's getting brittle over time. I think it might have happened to us when we had our ducts cleaned out years back. When we did an inspection under the house we found one that had separated and was sucking in dirt from under the house (not fun!)

This is a very hard job. They are just showing some minimal cleaning. If you want to deep clean, it takes a professional and about 300 to 400 us dollars depending on where you live (that price is for specials they run during the summer). That includes up to 15 supplies and returns. A typical house has 4 or 5 returns and 13 or so supplies depending on whether or not you have supplies/returns in garage and laundry room / furnace area, in which case it there would be a few more. (Keep in mind, that's just an average home which is a 3 bedroom ranch with no basement.). Before they come over to do the cleaning project, make sure you at least clean the vents and move obstructions that are around the vents as they need access to those supplies and returns - in other words, you don't want to make the HVAC company have to climb onto furniture to reach stuff and to have to move heavy lifting type obstructions from supplies on the floor (they are not a moving company), it will save you on the overall job not running into extras. Thanks for sharing this video with us REVIEW HOME WARRANTIES!!!!

Around minute 1:02, there is some white stuff between the duct and its housing. Isn't that asbestos tape? I'm no expert but this is what my HVAC guy taught me recently. He said if you see something between the duct and its housing that looks kind of like white homemade paper....it's asbestos tape from houses build before it was outlawed. So please be careful, you don't wanna disturb asbestos in any way whatsoever, from what I understand. Be safe!

Awesome comment. As someone that does duct work I don’t think it is. Asbestos tape is usually only on the outside of duct work and typically not on return ducts at all. There’s always some exceptions though. My guess is that’s the edge of some horizontal dry wall.

This is so confusing… in the beginning you had said to shut the thermostat off and leave the fan on. Towards the end when you were sticking the brush in the event, you said to have the fan off. So at what point do you turn the fan off.? Also, when you said you cover the supply vents because you will stir up some dust your grandson was taking the vent cover off and wiping and cleaning inside of a vent. Was that a return vent? So you wipe and clean inside all the returns vents after putting the leaf blower in it and then take off the covers you put on the supply vent and clean them with the fan off?I’ve tried to follow your tutorial and dust will not stop coming out of my fence after I tried to clean them. Obviously I did a horrible job help.

Lol this is how you make your air quality way worse. Your just agitating the dust and 90% of it is in the main trunk lines of supply and return. Call a reputable company that uses a negative air machine and agitation equipment with a truck mounted air compressor there is no other way to thoroughly clean it. This will literally just kick up more dust into your home as soon as that furnace kicks on they'll be more dust than ever blowing out.

Main lines/ returns/ supplies/ blower motor, coils etc. that shop vac will not clean deep into the duct lines. There’s gonna be alot of DIYers thinking they properly cleaned their duct work from watching this video when in fact, they can be disturbing settled dust making it worse than before. While I appreciate any do-it-yourself project, air duct cleaning is not one of them. All ductwork is interconnected, with the filter being the only protection. High efficiency filters are only 35% efficient, the fiberglass filter in the video only 5% efficient. Disrupting debris through the returns is pushing debris straight into the furnace cabinet and evaporative coil. You were installing a rotary brush into flex line which has a high potential to be torn or detached. The was no containment for the dust being blown inside your home, if there was actually a potential hazard, it is now in your ambient air. Lastly… the majority of debris is located in the trunk lines, which wasn’t addressed. I would respectfully suggest taking this video down… someone could cause a lot of damage performing these steps.

If you want to have a look, then a cheap way is to use a small web cam since the vents are probably plenty large enough for most to fit and they usually have a pretty long cord as well.

All these people are talking about so much dust going back into the house everywhere. I watched the video and seen a small c
Puff of dust come out. Did I miss something? Did you see some part of the video I didn't.?

For the guy that's a "air duct technician (😂😂)" you top flight techs use vacuums and compressed air or a duster w vacuum on one end. Dont try coming on their video acting like you have some kind of secret method no one knows about!! Maybe they couldn't afford a professional cleaning or maybe they were doing a video to help others who possibly couldn't afford 500 plus bucks...

So that’s what a furnace is supposedly look like. You should see this shit. And the wiring in the ac unit fan outside. No wonder why ac units don’t last long. You’ve got lazy ass “ technicians” doing half ass jobs. When I started caring and looking behind people’s work. Yeah that’s when I said oh fuck no. And just started doing the work myself. At least I know the works being done right

People don't waste your time yea maybe 5ft of the actual vents are clean but all you did was push all that to the mains.

I never done it, and just seeying all the dust going everywhere by blowing whit a big blower makes me laugh. At least try to catch some of the dust. The dust is now everywhere instant of inside the ducking.

And theres no way they could have cleaned that room, vacuumed, dusted before they turned the system back on?
