His daughter’s experience sounds like something called in Arabic jathoum and it’s happened to me twice in my life and it is very terrifying and it does stay with you, it’s just like he described, shadowy entities in the room and you can feel their intention to harm you coming out of them and at some point I start reciting the Quran even though I physically feel pressure on my body that is muffling my voice from coming out but I keep trying to shout the verses and that makes them go away.
I had a similar experience twice when I was much younger. It was what prompted me to start sleeping on my side. I couldn't move, shout out or wake fully. I struggled with it. I think they are jinns. After then I learnt my religion and improved my practice. I don't worry about it anymore. Alhamdulillah
What is the spiritual meaning of this experience?

Very interesting discussion and guest. What the Professor explained about the sort of enforced secular nature of his earlier education really resonated with me. Even as a muslim I really couldn't reconcile islamic mysticism, magic, dreams and other elements of the unseen (ghayb) with my education and the generally held beliefs of my peers. Perhaps thinking I was being more open-minded and forward thinking I would scoff at any mention of these phenomena or ignore them altogether. On the contrary it's through understanding my deen more that I have become open-minded.

It’s quite interesting the professor towards the end talked about the importance of keeping the audience and be respected. I would have thought he being an open minded and wise would care less about what people think and follow where the truth leads him to and ultimately look after number one and not lose out on something much more valuable.

Thank you for this fascinating discussion. Just a small pointer on pronunciation - I'm a doctor and I've only ever heard the words pronounced "me-TAS-ta-seez" and "me-TAS-ta-size" rather than "meta-STAY-seez" and "meta-STAY-size".
I only bring it up because you used the words a lot and you said you had to look them up.

The secular age : a small story- I once asked my niece who studies in 9th grade , "which is your favorite subject ?" She replied geography ! I wonder why, and asked her about it . She replied , " well when I was small i used to get scared 🙄of lightning and thunder as i believed this is God getting angry 😡because of our sins, but now I know that's not the case any more 😏."
You know this is such a great and by far the best news. This is the proof that our society, civilization, and the humanity of the world as a whole, will not or cannot descend into complete anarchy of athiesim ever! Because the soul and seeds of spiritualism will not perish until the end of times.

sounds to me like Allison's expertise in history would have actually been quite handy for writing this book, I mean, investigating the testimonies and comparing them and stuff like that, and offering explanations, sounds quite like what a historian would do, and it was done for his book about religious experience
There are many people around the world, who have this experience, that their consciousness cry out to them that there is God and that they have to search for Him. Some people pay attention to their voice of consciousness, most of mankind does not care about it.

I really liked what Prof. Dale was talking about especially the individuals who had their brains eaten away but before death as they behaved quite lucidly. Islam talks about ALLAH being the 'Turner of the hearts' and that ALLAH reads the heart so perhaps the soul-body is regulated by that mysterious 'thing' within the heart and that really becomes us rather than the body physical which decays and dies but the soul-consciousness lives on.
This is further backed by the idea that 'we' are placed inside a developing body after 120 of conception (hadith) so then who are the 'we' if not so much the physical? And remember Adam was a formed but lifeless thing of clay until ALLAH breathed into him!
Therefore, it makes sense that a man whose brain has been mostly eaten away can function while still having his spirit encased in the flesh but ready for a journey of another kind in the 'grave' or dimension whatever that may be. As to our hadith saying: O ALLAH I seek refuge in you from the punishment of the grave and from the punishment of the Hell-Fire and from the trials of life and death and from the evil of the trials of the Anti-christ - we are given that what uplifts us in our hour of need. Doesn't matter if one is Arab or not, named religion or not. What matters seemingly is the soul-worth of the person - not his skin color or outward appearance! fascinating discussion. the Quran is holy expression that mixes the incorporation of worldly affairs (like war) with transcendental realities ( like unseen beings- 'angels').. it's miraculous that two beings are even sitting and having an understandable discussion

Reminds me of the verse in the Isra chapter: “And they ask you about the Spirit. Say, "The Spirit is of the Command of my Lord; and in no way have you been brought of knowledge except a little." (Israa, 85). Separately, it’s unfortunate that careerism kept his work from the world for many years. I wonder how many other ideas are hidden in American academia because of such fear of publishing. This is the one thing that has made me not identify as an atheist anymore no way these can all be coincidences. However all of the NDEs and visions and what not they all don't really point to a single religion or faith it seems (I know there are many Christian NDEs but also many non Christian ones) it is honesty overall a very confusing and Id say distressing topic
I’m reading this book atm but something occurred to me .If the “ I” identity is a constructed one that exists here in the world … surely it should dissolve in the afterworld so how come people come back as “ themselves” with the “ I “ identity intact ?
Its a shame that a rational book is unable to be published by a more junior professor for fear of denial of employent.. free speech for those empowered i guess.

Neville Goddard could explain the experience we all encounter them in various ways still same in remembrance of what your Imaginations will surprise when secular history is flesh and blood blindness in love with shadows. Neville was offered what churches thought man needed, collages same knowledge is also still blinded about where and what bible stories always dead till you wake then what Paul reminded Saul's and John Baptists very great but still least by looking outside themselves is classic religions' very great dead and buried others very good.
‘Spirtual’ experience should not be confused with things like sleep paralysis explained by persistence of paralysis encountered in REM sleep or autoscopy described in certain firms of epilepsy, or a feeling of dread or smells or a presence noted in certain forms of temporal lobe epilepsy. Nor should it be confused with true revelation (wahi) from God .
Buddhist and Sufi experiences may be due to training of the parietal lobe to obscure self with non self.
alhumdulillah Islam accounts for the "demon stories" jinns and miracles in because Allah is still active with Awliyah (the famous example of Imam Ahmad ibn Hanbal).

All experiences, both religious and secular, are manufactured by the physical body. When the body dies there no more experience - only formless energy.
