  • As the search continues for the submersible carrying five people to the wreckage of the Titanic, family and friends are holding out hope for a safe recovery of the vessel known as Titan.
Chris Brown, a modern-day explorer and multi-millionaire, pulled out of the trip at the last minute due to safety concerns.
He joined LiveNOW from FOX's Josh Breslow to talk about that decision.
Brown is a friend of Hamish Harding, one of five people onboard the missing submersible. The other passengers have been identified as Paul-Henry Nargeolet, Stockton Rush, Shahzada Dawood and Sulaiman Dawood.

This gentleman acted with great intelligence, due dilligence and extreme caution. The 'Titan' was a largely untested and highly experimental design headed for one of the most dangerous locations on the planet. (It's likely that the carbon-fibre hull, possibly compromised from previous dives, failed, leading to an instantaneous catastrophic implosion.) The only positive for the crews family members is that those men would have died in a millisecond, they'd have been unaware of their own passing. The alternative, that of being alive but entombed within a dark powerless vessel at the bottom of the deep, knowing that, in fact, there was no possible hope of rescue, is the stuff of nightmares. xx SF

Speaking as a former U.S. Navy submariner, the water pressure upon the hull is beyond substantial. I was a crewmember of a 688 Class nuclear fast attack sub. When a new sub departs for its first sea trial its hull is smooth but when it returns to port for the first time, you can count the ribs in the hull. In addition, every system on a U.S. Navy sub has multiple backups and each hull penetration has a highly tested backup valve in the event the highly-tested hull valve fails. CO2 scrubbers remove carbon dioxide from the air while O2 generators produce oxygen...and the levels of these and other gases are closely monitored and the monitors themselves have backups. In addition, each of the crew is trained to perform a free ascent from a submarine to the surface when the sub is disabled at a shallow enough depth. My hope is that the operators of these tourist subs will be scrutinized much more heavily ...whether it be deep submersibles touring the Titanic, or those operating at Caribbean-like tourist destinations in shallow coastal waters. Our prayers are with the families.

Diving at depths that deep means thousands of lbs of extreme pressure. You cannot just use random crap to construct something for that environment and blow off safety guidelines. Part of why it took so long to find Titanic was because it was so deep and the extremely special equipment it takes to go that deep. When you see deep sea fish brought to the surface, they are all bloated and grotesque due to the absence of pressure they would normally be under. Unbelievable and preventable negligence. When you’re told something is going to be safe and you want to see something historical like the titanic you’re going to be inclined to believe that it’s safe. They’re not dumb, just misguided and probably weren’t looking into it so much.
I have a fear of roller coasters but I’ve rode so many still even when I was concerned about being strapped in right, the ride being old, or the ride having a history of someone dying on it decades ago. But I still went on those coasters because I was told it was safe. Im still alive and don’t think this is comparable, but it’s my attempt to show how even if there’s concerns you’re probably going to believe something is safe if it’s advertised that way.

That’s sad the second person who backed out to be on that sub and asked a friend to go in their place.

I had going to explore the Titanic on a sub on my bucket list. I was shocked when I saw the emersable looking so cheap and unsophisticated in design and safety. The price tag of a quarter of a million you would think it was a real sub like the navy uses. I was more shocked when I found out they didn't have any certification over less than 2k feet when they go to 12k feet. How was it legally allowed to go to uncertified depths? I would never had gone on that submersible looking like it did and not passing deep depth certifications. The government agencies that allowed this company to take people to these depths without certifications should be sued. They are responsible for not shutting this business down.

After hearing the reasons why this gentleman backed out of this trip, I'm shocked that the other passengers were still willing to go. Him backing out would have been a big red flag for me (I'd like to think so anyway). I'm also shocked that this company was allowed to even attempt this dive without that certification. You'd think there would be regulations in place.

I can't imagine the terror these people must be going through, presumably trapped in this submarine with little oxygen left. My heart goes out to them and I pray for a miracle. The ability of the tourist sub’s hull design to withstand such depths was questioned in a 2018 lawsuit filed by OceanGate’s former director of marine operations, David Lochridge, who said he was fired after he raised safety concerns about the vessel. The same happened when Alexander Carlysle, a designer at Harland and Wolf, raised concerns about the inadequate number of lifeboats on Titanic. His concerns were ignored and he resigned. I read that their means of communication was a play station. I don't think that naming this submersible Titan was a very good idea - it is 2 letters short of the name Titanic.

All the subarminers I have seen commenting think it imploded since it wasn’t tested at that depth in otherwords it was instant the pressure was soo intense and soo fast it would be over before they even processed it. I can’t believe anyone thought using that experimental death trap was a good idea it’s just crazy
