Very nice documentary, may Albert RIP. And a LOT of progress in Estonia since. Greeetings from Finland!
Estonians are a people who have suffered a lot with the devastation of WW 2; they have a rich culture full of music and dances of all types during their celebrations. It is up to America and Western Europe to make sure they are not occupied again. Fortunately this Documentary was made in the 1990s when many of the WW 2 generation was still alive including Albert and he was able to tell his story, now only a very few are left, wish the best for their country.
I lived off and on in Estonia for almost a decade. It is a beautiful country with intelligent friendly people. I know most of the country reasonably well and its power over me will reside forever. Long live Free Estonia!
I wept over your sorrow, then rejoiced at your freedom and new hope. Bless you people of Estonia; long live your homeland forever.
Extraordinary to have this glimpse of Estonia on the cusp of independence. I'm sure Albert would be proud of the work that has been done.
Aw, rats. Albert needed just a few more months.
What a sweetheart of a man.
A wonderful show. The people were proud of their country.
Dear Estonia, you touch my heart in a profound way. Be well, be strong, be you. 🏴❤🇪🇪
Wonderful patriots who became free again. Bless you and your country.
Very moving...My parents also met in a displaced persons camp, but they were Lithuanian. They never went home....
My Estonian parents also met in a DP camp, ended up in England before going to Canada. My father never thought he'd go back home, however, was lucky to have lived long enough to do so. It's too bad Albert never saw Estonia gain re-independence. My dad died in 1995, so never saw Estonia as it is today. He would be so proud to know his grandsons (cousins) live and work in Estonia. I am lucky to have sung in the song festival with my Estonian Canadian choir.

Estonia The Baltic Tiger - it is a very good documentary in YuuTuube.
What a truly beautiful documentary. As a young Estonian person who has never seen or born in the Soviet Union, I truly weeped and cried seeing all this. This really hits deep now with the Ukrainian war and the fear of this coming into our land again. The both views of this independance as a culture, the songfestival and the nature, speak to me deeply. The songs that speak about our history seemed like it also were meaningful to Albert aswell. What truly hit deep was when Albert took the spruce tree with him and planted it on her wife's grave. What an amazing story hearing all those people going back home and also feeling that they have been away for so long that they think of themselves as from an another culture. This is what foreign occupation does to people.
I've been watching the "Estonian Soldier" channel for news. He's better than many at reporting news.
Recommendable! This documentary was filmed about 1990 or so
My message to all of you in the Baltic countries, including Finland, you need to stick together, nevermind your different languages, you are all beutifull people and tuff.the United States of the Baltics, you would be very powerful!!!!!!.god bless the Baltics, Respect!!!!! Peter Scott O'Donnell 🙂🍀❤️💐🙏🇦🇺🇪🇪
It’s pretty incredible when all the Whos of Whoville get together and sing. This must have been filmed circa 1990, just before the Soviet Moscow coup attempt in ‘91; Russian army didn’t leave until 1994.
So beautiful. Freedom is the highest human attribute.
Estonia has the most beautiful flag
Beautiful nation beautiful people 👍👍
Protect your culture always
OOOF, I just love my country :) Estonia, I always love you!
Thank you
Sweet man-- cried for joy for him ❤
28:09 - damn, this reporter was propthetic.. this is exactly what happened. estonia is way ahead of the curve compared to other ex soviet occupied states.
Why would you use the Orthodox Alexander Nevsky Cathedral as the video thumbnail? Estonia (incl. Tallinn) is a traditionally Lutheran nation and the Orthodox Cathedral was built at the highest point in the otherwise medieval old town only in 1900, as a symbol of Russian imperialism, at the height of the Russification era. Estonians generally despise the church and there were serious plans of demolishing it in the 1920s. It's rather offensive to show it as some main symbol of Tallinn...
My good friend and colleague Sulev never thought he could come home to his farm in Narva. But he made it. The music festival is very much like the Welsh Eisteddfod.
Miks ma seda enne pole näinud? Albert on legend.
Estonia is actually bigger than Switzerland,Belgium,Netherlands... i think top130~ in size of country in the world from around 205~ countries, so. not as bad as people always think it is ...
WOW,,, what a parade. ..
2:01 The people knew all the while what was to come, yet had no means to stop it.
Damn, wish people here would be as hopeful and enthusiastic like back then. Great patriotism boost tho.
11:50 this sounds like a nature documentary xD

Rooting for the Estonian SS "heroes", eh?
@@danielgyllenbreider Donkey!
A bigger problem in many parts of eastern Europe is that the Soviets moved ethnic russian populations all over the place so there are significant russian minorities left in many countries. Russia has used this as an excuse to invade other countries such as Georgia and Ukraine.
@@danielgyllenbreider Definitely not rooting for Soviet "heroes" who weren't far of from Nazi's ethnic cleansing.

How did the tens of thousands of Estonians escape Soviet occupation? Via Sweden , Finland or Germany?
Sweden and Germany, some to Finland but they didn't stay there and moved to Sweden.
Between the main land and the Estonian islands in the winter the water would freeze. People could escape onto one of the islands and then the island people who had fishing boats would in the dark sail out in to the Baltic Sea to meet Swedish rescue ships to take them to Sweden.
@@sunshade1000 They escaped mostly 1944 september, then soviets came

Estonia The Baltic Tiger - it is also very good Documentary in YuuTuube. Highly recommended!
lol the Soviets treated the Estonians far worse than Nazis ever did. Look up the Kautla Massacre for one. Look at the mass deportations to death camps in Siberia.
You ignorant boy!
You ignorant boy!
Entire message of the film: Blood and soil good; tradition good; Soviet Russia bad. Was funny to hear "Did you think it would just be a propaganda fest?", as if it wasn't. Propaganda is just symbols designed to influence people. That festival was entirely symbols (clothing, songs, dances) designed to stir up nationalistic sentiment. Wasn't so much a coherent history as a bundle of images and words designed to make you feel sorry for Estonians and annoyed at Russia.
It was about the people who's lives got caught inbetween the sprocket-wheels of time. It's a very different story if a propaganda is a message of freedom and equality and the people are working on actually keeping their society free. Or if the state is spreading the same kind of message but is constantly suppressing and terrorising the people.
@@kristjan.v and even more so if one has personal memories and/or memories passed on vividly by beloved people/family (this time, soviet time, war time, times before).
That's something that no one never can not take away nor "replace".
History always revolve around people.
It's also reason why soviet propaganda never worked for these people (basically same family).
What a sick Soviet crimes apologist you are...
Why are you apologizing for and defending one of the most disgusting and evil regimes in history! Sick!
Are you from estonia?
