Travis Is correct. "Not if I see you first" means either "I will avoid you rather than have to spend time with you" Or potentially "I will kill you on sight" in Travis's scary voice.
He is right but I also always thought it was what he thought initially, that it was like "I'll see you before you see me"

I’ve always interpreted “not if I see you first” as an expression of intention of the speaker to avoid the other person if they see them first
Before today it never crossed my mind that it could be interpreted that way. I totally get it now, but I've never heard it used or used it in that context before. It was always just a playful "Ahhh but maybe I'll be the one to notice you first the next time we cross paths!"

Like so many times in the past, Travis is right. For many years, I always assumed it was a fun way of saying "if I see you before you see me, then I'M the one who has seen you later." But that doesn't even make grammatical sense. It doesn't matter who sees whom first--both parties are seeing the other. The only context it makes sense is Travis's interpretation.

The fact that the person's boss when buying chairs for their employees didn't think "Hey, I should make sure the chairs I buy accommodate all of my employees and not just employees of one specific body type!" It's so infuriating. That employer bought you a chair that doesn't fit you. In a good world, you would be able to straight up tell your boss that. It would be like not accommodating disabled employees. The fatphobia in this world treats fat people as inhuman and undeserving.
I'm sorry but it's not the same a accommodating a disability. Obesity is not a disability. You can demand better conditions from an employer, but don't try to frame excess body fat as a disability.
@@Levacque Obesity is often a result of disability. There's a huge crossover between obesity and chronic mental and physical health conditions. Not in every case, for sure, but definitely often enough that people should just be accommodating without demanding someone prove they're one of the fat people who 'deserves' basic respect by asking them to bring out their medical records or trauma history or whatever.
To be honest Justin comparing expensive Space Pocahantas to one of the most important pieces of literature in the Sci-Fi genre is extremely funny, especially given the fact that he himself does not like Avatar.

Travis is 100% wrong. “Not if I see you first” is absolutely a jokey response devised by uncles in the 20s/50s, not a badass call to challenge devised by rival assassins or whatever. Kinda like how “See you later, alligator” isn’t a threat that I intend to attack you with an alligator in the near future.

Is it really? I mean, that’s always how I’ve understood it. I can’t really think of it being used maliciously as in really trying to insult the person. I’ve always heard it used playfully as a light tease or zing. But, yeah. They other way doesn’t make sense. I mean, two people can see each other at the same time. Is that meant to be the joke - the absurdity?
Whereas in the Travis version, I imagine that the joke is that they would avoid the other person (thus preventing them from being seen). Not necessarily hiding, like dodging behind a potted plant… but more like taking a different hallway to your destination to avoid walking past them. 🤷♀️
I think that Travis did the ADHD brain thing where you think waaaaaaay too long about a saying and you forget the actual meaning, so you make one up that only technically works based on a specific point of view.
