This is why Everything Everywhere All At Once stood out to me. A well-rounded and unique heroine with flaws (in fact her flaws were why she was chosen as the hero!) is a breath of fresh air these days!
There is loads of great female characters still around. Videos like this tend to pull revisionist history and act like lots existed in the past but none do now. They cherry pick examples a lot. I think she even misrepresents some of the characters in the video.
Yes. And in fact most of us know Michelle Yeoh stars in so many films where SHE is the lead and she is the star. I don't know where these modern writers think women were back then. Maybe they never seen a single Michelle Yeoh film ever. Even when Yeoh starred in James Bond, she is an equal to Bond and not even a love interest. In fact, she often dominates a lot of the fighting scenes because she knows martial arts.
Bruce has been put through the ringer his whole life, he was abused by his Dad, he saw his Dad kill his Mom, he became an enemy of the State for virtually no reason, he lost the Woman he loved, he attempted Suicide, and then his own Cousin straight up says his issues don't matter because she gets Cat-Called? the sheer *AUDACITY* of the She-Hulk writers for taking my all time favorite female Marvel Hero and turning her into basically a selfish narcissistic Karen.
Yes, we can say none of these writers know the material they are writing about. They know of them in the most superficial way but have never read the past books or saw any of the past films, if any.
Exactly!! Bruce has had crappy life dealt to him, and she has the gaul to say it was insignificant compared to her being cat called? She's a successful lawyer with no financial issues or actual complications in her life, and yet she says that she has the worst life ever because she gets cat called!? F OFF!!
Yeah, except, none of that is canon to the MCU Hulk. At least, the Ruffalo one. They retconned his abusive childhood in a scene that was supposed to be in Thor Ragnarok, where his only bad experience with his dad was that he wasn't spending enough time with him.
People keep mistaking feminism for being angry or being a jackass. Just because we would like to see more dynamic women in media and build off of what’s been established with characters like the original Mulan, Ellen Ripley and Sarah Connor does not mean that you can get away with writing your female characters in a lazy manner. Equality means equal, not degrading one to get more.
The anger in these modern female characters is only a reflection of the anger in the feminist writers who have taken over these projects Just like Velma, you can feel the disdain and spite the writer has for the audience. Their attempt at humor is always mean spirited and condescending But the one common denominator is the Anger. This is what you get after years of digesting a toxic ideological message. It leaves you a bitter n vindictive person and it can't help but spill into your writing
I was going to say exactly that. These character traits only mirror the flaws of the writers personalities. These are people I certainly wouldn't want to know. Must be why I refuse to go anywhere near Twitter!
Modern "feminists" say they want equality, but what they really want is pay-back. They can't get it against the men who actually oppressed women, since most of them are dead, or on the other side of the world. So they go after who they can: Men that would otherwise have been on their side.
Absolutely - but to be fair, Married With Children is still the standard bearer when it comes to humor that is entirely mean spirited. I still detest that show to this day.
Your last point is the one that bothers me the worst. Modern Hollywood seems to have this idea that it can present us with an objectively terrible person - Wanda, Reva, Sylvie, Karli - someone whose actions make them obviously a villain, but as long as the other characters call them “brave” or “misunderstood” or “they’ll never know what you sacrificed,” then the audience will just play along. That’s not how this works. WandaVision had a great premise: a hero goes mad with grief and becomes a villain. The fact that the show starts out comedic, and the true horror of the situation only becomes apparent over time, takes it from great to genius. But the whole thing only works if you acknowledge that she IS the villain, and the reason the show falls apart as it progresses is because the writers lacked the courage to follow the story to that natural conclusion. Kenobi was just a generally bad show, but Reva could still have had a decent arc: villain sees the error of her ways and redeems herself. It’s a bit cliche, but not offensively so - it’s Vader’s own arc, after all. But again, for this to work, you have to start from the premise that she IS evil. That shouldn’t be hard to do when she’s hunting down kids, but instead the writers jump through hoops to portray her as a victim. Then they take her from villain to hero without a single moment of self-recognition and remorse, just “she was secretly good all along”. I could go on, but you get the point - writers write obvious villains (or in She-Hulk’s case, just all-around jerks) then tell us they’re not bad and we should admire them. It’s a form of gaslighting, and it makes the audience (who isn’t that dumb) unable to invest in the characters or the story. I’m not sure if this is on purpose, because they’re afraid to make female characters true villains, or if they’re trying to write nuanced anti-heroes but have lost the knack. Either way, it’s just bad writing.
Correct. And I have pointed out the same in the past. 1) Rey's first act when she sees Finn is assume the BLACK MAN is a criminal and attacks him without proof --is that how you meet your future friend??? 2) Not to be outdone, Rose does the same thing. Uses a tazer on a BLACK MAN whom she believes is guilty without giving him time to prove his innocence. Great. 3) Not to be outdone, LEIA then uses a blaster to stun Poe without warning. I am sure that's a violation of every cop engagement rule ever. (no "drop your weapons" even) 4) Indian Peter Pan's first act towards the Darling kids is to point his blade at them. These writers just don't know how to respect weapons in this "modern age". They think it's a "cool" scene. No. Any soldier will tell you not to jokingly point guns at anyone and the same rule applies with swords back then. That's a threatening gesture. 5) Of course, Black Widow and her Russian sister meet by trying to kill each other first. Just TALK, FFS! 6) this is not limited to the women. Batman vs Superman suffered the exact same thing. They fight almost to the death when all one had to do was utter a simple sentence in the beginning. This is not how anyone makes friends.
My wife is a bit of a movie buff, and she hates this "modern" take on women in films. She says she doesn't feel that any of these characters represent how she thinks, acts or feels about anything. Moreover, she finds it hard to believe that most of these characters are written by women. She's avoided, given up on and avoided more films and tv shows now than I care to remember. As for male characters....she wants her "proper" men back!
@fightersweep Well these characters aren't written for women like your wife or the numerous women within geek culture. But what's funny about this is women like your wife are expected to like this stuff because it exist. That's how narcissistic the writers are.
Considering the crimes she committed, all those she murdered, the subjugation, the attempt at killing a young girl for her own benefit, having her 'kill herself' doesn't absolve her, if anything it just cements herself as the narcissist the writers made her into.
@@wratchedno dude, she became a narcissist when the writers had her mentally excuse and forgive her own heinous misdeeds in the last episode of wandavision, verbally spelled out by the ever-so on-the-nose words of what’s-her-face black captain marvel. No, enslaving an entire town and subjecting them to immense physical and mental agony while they’re fully aware of everything happening is not okay just because _you_ are sad because _you_ lost loved ones. Everyone grieves eventually, Wanda should not be treated as a special case.
Growing up, I was such a big fan of Hulk and She-Hulk, so I was very excited when I heard She-Hulk was getting a series. I loved casting Tatiana Maslany because I thought she was a fantastic choice. Unfortunately they quickly proved they not only don't understand the character, but they went out of their way to make me (and other fans) feel bad for liking her in the first place. Sure there ARE toxic people that have no business commenting on these shows/movies/characters, but I cringe so much every time I that twerking scene. If I'm being very kind, they had maybe 2 episodes that were okay. But it's so frustrating how much they ruined a great character. And I always thought Shuri was a great "guy in the chair". She wasn't supposed to be a lead. She was a brilliant scientist and fun side character. Making her Black Panther just didn't make sense. She's maybe 100 pounds, and I can't see her as a fighter. Obviously I could go on, but I miss fantastic female characters like Buffy, Ashoka, the original Bionic Woman, The Bride from Kill Bill, obviously Ripley etc... Thank you for putting things in perspective and I'm very happy it's not just me seeing it. Because if I say anything, apparently I'm misogynistic 🤦♂️
The character Valkyrie was LITERALLY a slave trader. She SOLD people into a colloseum to fight to the death. No redemption, no accountability, just smug superiority. But now she's the King of Asgard, and that was all forgotten.
So was the tribe of the woman king in her titular movie, and that was conveniently ignored. Why do modern entertainers obsessively idolize the very worst women in either reality or fiction as heroes?
@@DannyDevitoOffical-TrustMeBro, because it's to push an ideologic feminist message which says "female equals saintly, pure, superior and absolute while male equals diabolical, opressive, immature and repulsive".
I'm glad more women are speaking out against these poorly written female characters in modern media...cause us dudes can't win when it comes to criticising them without being labelled as Sexist or Bigoted :'(
Looking forward to your take on awful male characters. One could almost argue that the bad female characters are bad because they're shallow copies of bad male ones.
Very fine points made in the video and below in the comments. For me, the passing of Tina Turner for example, reminds me she played a real badass character in Mad Max. She was a villain, but a very sympathetic one. And among all the enemies of Max, you can say that she is the only one who walks away into the sunset. While she knows she's been defeated by Max, she nevertheless recognizes a worthy opponent and lets him live at the end. These "modern" feminist writers have never seen the many movies where women were cast and had really meaningful roles in the past. Someone referenced Everywhere All At Once. Michelle Yeoh starred in a James Bond movie. And she was a fellow agent beside Pierce Brosnan. Not even a love interest which I really like from that plotting but an equal partner in the mission. In fact, she even often dominates some scenes because she can do real martial arts and stunts. And if you look far back enough, in the Conan 2 series, they cast Grace Jones as a barbarian warrior who was one of Arnold Schwarzenegger's fighting buddies. There was nothing weak about that role and in fact, though some of the others die, this black lady lives to the end and becomes a personal bodyguard to the queen. I myself am a writer and I write a fantasy series (#adventurefinders) where the majority of the leads are women. But I will never shortchange my male characters or show them in a terrible incompetent light. They still live in a male dominated world all around. And most of the movers and shakers and rulers in the world are still all men.
I follow many media channels it"s refreshing to have a female voice to speak on things men would be accused of Mansplaining. Loving the content keep up the good work! Bob from Canada.
100% agreed , we need more Joan de Arc , Boudicca , Ripley , Sarah Connor [from T1/2] , Toph , Leia , etc ; some other ppl have said that the modern crop of writers have little to no genuine/authentic life experiences where they have dealt with hardship , so their writing is hollow/shallow becuz that's their only view of the world , they cant write complex/motivated characters becuz they dont have that kind of understanding
"Modern Female Characters" that don't suck. IMO Holga Kilgore (Michelle Rodriguez) - Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves Nik Khan (Golshifteh Farahani) - Extraction II I don't believe the writer(s) in either movie were trying to make a social statement.
0:11 The seething resentment that is pouring off of this collective mob is far more menacing than any Thanos snap. Any group of men that showed such angry expressions plastered onto their faces would be put on a govt watch list.
Thank you it's so nice to know that the female population is as tired of the "modern audience syndrome" as we men are. Who are these character's supposed to appeal to even are there really young people out there who think this a good look or way to behave? I hope not and I'm glad my grand children are thankfully nothing like that.
The missing accountability of modern female characters is sooooo sexist to me. As if we as women are incapable of being evil and if we do evil acts it is just because we were wronged in the past. No. Just no. Where are the Eowyns, the Clarice Starlings, those badass women who challenged problems without losing their femininity? Those I can relate to. Those I find inspiring. What I mean to say: Good video :)
You just described Naru from last year's Prey to a T. But, before you watch Prey, please do yourself a favor and watch the first three Predator films. Anyways, thank you for the video and I'm looking forward to the next part of this video!
It's such a shame that neither my narcissistic mother nor my narcissistic, violent, alcoholic ex-fiancee will see superhero films or the criticism that accompanies them. If they did, they might recognize themselves as characters in the films, or at least find themselves named in the critiques, like this one. Many thanks. You're spot on, as usual!
Schopenhauer surmised that women's fundamental flaw is a lack of honour. Sad that these writers and by extension their characters are proving the angry old sod correct.
I think there's a fundamental difference between men and women that manifests in the way they interact with the world. To me, male heroes/villains - whether purely vengeful or not - have a focused, dangerous, essentially masculine (sexed, not gendered) sense of justice fueled by testosterone, muscle, and single-mindedness (and this doesn't necessarily make for an interesting character, by the way). This is why I find female characters steeped in these characteristics so jarring - they are, frankly, unrealistic. Not impossible, but definitely atypical of biological programming. By all means, have strong independent female characters - but don't simply put them in pants and gird them with the most obtuse (some would say, toxic) elements of masculinity. It completely undermines women's capacity for complexity, emotional depth and essentially feminine attributes typically unavailable to men.
@@JB-lp9xr Sorry, I didn't mean to infer that. What I mean is that by simply moulding women characters in the image of a particular kind of masculinity, writers render them one-dimensional, and also don't allow them to wield feminine characteristics that would make them interesting characters in ways that masculine characters can't be.
A lot of people dont like Captain Marvel's character but as someone with Borderline Personality Disorder, I can actually *See* where she's coming from. She's kidnapped from Earth by aliens(The Kree), brainwashed into believing their miltaritistic and quite xenophobic programming as normal and the first time we see her on Earth, she is still following what they taught her. I know this makes her *unlikable* but her struggling to be taken seriously because she wanted to have hobbies and interests that the guys were having, which parallels my own upbringing where my Dad wanted a boy(my brother died stillborn) and spent the first few years of my life trying to raise me as one, til puberty hit and told him otherwise. Then spent the rest of my life, gaslighting me and tormenting me psychologically because I refused to follow my programmed function as a female: IE marry and have kids. He sabotaged every attempt of mine to try and find work or be independant. I developed a mental illness because of it. And I can see myself acting out like Captain Marvel did, if I had had powers connected to an infinity stone. Is she overpowered? Well of course she is. Effectively shes got the power of an artificat running through her body. I know for a fact, that if I had had psychic abilities growing up, I would be in jail now because I would have acted out in my rage like she does and the abilities would have responded since for some reason, any show that has female characters with abilities(going back as far as Charmed even), their emotions and their powers are always linked. I have suffered consequences for my actions because I couldnt defend myself from the bullies around me and it has left me with mental scars. I dont consider myself likeable but then I don't try to be. Why does EVERY female character out there have to be likable? Sorry but that's not my reality. I have grown up around a lot of females who are as unlikable as they come, didnt stop them from succeeding in their life. Maybe the problem isnt that female characters are unlikable but perhaps that now we have TOO many of them?
Thank you for this! This was very helpful to me. I have just published a book where the protagonist is a female. She is a U.S. Marshal getting her first opportunity in witness protection. She is a badass. While she is tough and driven, she is also kind, empathetic, and, like all of us, flawed. This book was meant to be a one-time thing. But, since I fell in love with this character, I have decided to create a series with her. Your analysis of female characters makes me feel like I have chosen the right path for her. Alexandra "Alex" Tanner is gaining popularity already. Thank you again for this!
Please keep the content going. It’s great, well thought out and too often I hear make fans getting the blame for low ratings and ticket sales. Fans of all genders are tired of these characters
Really love old movies - great stories & character development. Haven’t watched a new movie in a decade. Modern ideologies create media that doesn’t add anything good to life. Just pass.
The way they wrote Galadriel for that show is one of the many great insults to Tolkien's original works. I've said it numerous times before but whoever Morfydd Clark is meant to be playing in this abomination of television isn't Galadriel. Least of all the one that Tolkien himself wrote in his original novels. Galadriel represented both wisdom, love and compassion beyond words. This was the character who was able to completely change Gimli's perspective of Elves after meeting her. If he had met the Amazon version of her, his displeasure of Elves probably would have grown all the more greater. I choose instead to view Clarke's character as the bitter and envious younger sister of the REAL Galadriel, whom was always jealous and bitter over the fact that her parents (as well as everyone else) favoured her big sister more than her, and that is in truth the actual reason she's hunting for Sauron, purely in just some shallow petty way to prove to everyone she's better than her sister.
Remember between the 1960s to the 1990s where having a girl/female version of the main hero was kinda cool. Spiderman had Spiderwoman. He-man had She-Ra. And Batman had Batgirl. Back then, the girl/female versions of these heroes didn't disrespect the main hero. Some either knew they weren't as good as them or at least tried to be their equal or work together nicely or even has certain abilities that the main hero doesn't have that can help them. Those were the good old days. But now, not to sound sexist or anything, making a girl/female version of the male heroes is just annoying. They belittle them and act that they are better than them. Not to mention they give them unlikable personalities. They should just stop that trend. Just make original female characters and stop make painful female versions of our male heroes.

finally someone agrees with me and most importantly a women like i don't care if a female character is strong or whatever hell i sometimes enjoy when they are, but what i don't like is how angry they are all the time and cocky and mean and just act like they are better then everybody and they are right all the time and if they make a mistake it's not their fault, and another reason is when they gain power without any sort of training or struggle or anything, a prime example is Rey from star wars unlike Luke where he had to train and basically go through hell and lose a hand to get power, Rey just immediately gained power without any training or struggle or suffering or anything like Luke. I just hope eventually they'll learn to make good female character but i'm not holding my breathe. anyway i'm done ranting and have a nice day/night.
It's really strange to me. As someone else mentioned, I don't recall any massive anger over characters like Ellen Ripley or Sarah Connor or even Alice from Resident Evil being the focus of their respective series and being badasses. Did Hollywood just forget how to write a character that was both feminine and tough as nails? It was weird to see this even in the most recent James Bond film. The new 007 was actually quite good, but it felt very forced for her to keep reminding Bond that she took his old number and job. Sure, you're 007 now, but you've got a long way to go as a character before you're as iconic as Bond has been for cinema. Come back to me in 10 films and see if they're still casting that specific version of 007 then, I'll be impressed.
It's because they are poorly done examples of activism bleeding into art. It's clear to see the current day social issues they are trying to incorporate. So they become social commentary first, art second. This wouldn't be a problem if a story was well made and intended to be a protest (The Crucible, where the heroes LOST). But the problem is...everyone can subconsciously detect that the artists were far more intent on talking about things they hated about the world rather than sharing things they loved. That's why there is anger and it is depicted so intrinsically to these heroines that we can all see the views of the writer in everything the characters experience. These shows might as well have a door left open on the set, where the writer can peek out to inform us of what sociopolitical issues they're trying to relate to in the scenes.
Well, well, well... there must have been a serious character study involving 90% of western females. Because these characters are spot on. So men from around the world, if you want to know how western females think and act. Just watch any of the movies in this video. However, when they reach that wall at 30. And start to experience the slow decline of their physical beauty. Just sit back and watch them fade to dust.
I really love cool believable female characters like: Sarah Manning, Alison Hendrix, Cosima Niehaus, Helena Vi, Jinx & Caitlyn Motoko Kusanagi Elen Ripley Jyn Erso Kristin Ortega Cheryl Strayed (Wild) Roberta "Bobbie" Draper Chrisjen Avasarala & Anna Volovodov Camina Drummer & Naomi Nagata Beatrix "the Bride" Kiddo (Black Mamba) Sarah Connor Jane Banner (Wind River) Max & Eleanor Guthrie (Black Sails) Rita Vrataski (The Angel of Verdun) I really hate Girl Bosses like: Galadriel (Rings of Power) Rey Skywalker She Hulk Ahsoka & Sabine So it’s so sad to see Tatiana Maslany to go from all the really loveable characters in Orphan Black to the unwatchable She Hulk. -
She-Hulk should have been able 3 things: overcoming self-esteem issues, fighting crime thru law and having fun with self-aware jokes like in the comics. Nothing in She-Hulk felt self-aware, the law part of the story felt off and unbelievable and the fact that Jennifer Walters wasn't overcoming self-esteem issues makes her look beautiful in her hulk form not that interesting, unlike in the comics.
In respect to wanda. I feel Monica not blaming her at the end of Wanda vision was the worst part. But over all i dont mind Wandas arc. Because in the comics she is more than a little Batty. And often depecited as being more than a little bit mentally unstable. In that case i feel it is not entirely innaccurate for her to have these characteristics.
That scene of avengers endgame with the all-female a team whatever is literally the most hated scene in all of that movie. You're not going to believe this though, Lego is releasing a avengers endgame all female scene set piece. That most hated scene from the avengers movie is now going to be released as a Lego set! Anyone want to bet money that it's going to bomb? It'd be on clearance 2 days after it comes out
I hate how these characters never face retribution or the consequences of their actions look at Eltariel she betrays Talion and she refuses to believe she did wrong, she moves on like she’s the good guy, she later tells Talion of how he betrayed the light after she left him for dead after taking his life support and left him dumbfounded and confused on the ground dying from one of the only people he trusted. She betrayed him for literally POWER and the game treats her as the good guy there are no consequences no moment of oh my god I just murdered Ghandi. There are no moments of self reflection on how she left someone who saw her as a friend to die after lecturing him so many times about allowing power to corrupt yet Eltariel steals the power from Talion as an easy way out and she could not even beat Sauron Talion was destined to defeat Sauron yet she felt she had the right to betray him, leave him for dead, accuse him of betrayal after he literally revived himself tooth and nail so he could have his own choice in his life so he could be in control of his life because all his life tyrants and ugly people have hurt him and the ones he loved so in his final moments he turns to the darkness so he can have a choice in his life, he even resists the darkness for so long protecting the world. He gave up his entire being to protect the world from an evil he was selfless to the end where he was fucking magically mind raped and corrupted this is literally when he becomes the “bad guy” he was so pure and good and selfless he resisted pure malice and darkness being a beacon of light until the same bitch who betrayed him says “you’re not alone” to him after he let her betrayal slide. Those two words are what turn him truly evil “you are not alone” after tossing him aside like a piece of meat she lied to his face. Beauty is always destroyed by the ugly. Imagine stabbing someone in the back then bribing thesmelf back to life and you tell them you’re not alone buddy as the bitch took his life support(no joke) and left him on the ground writhing in pain and dying she didn’t even stay with him in his “final” moments no both of the people he thought were his friends betrayed him cold on the ground after he gave them his absolute all. Female characters never have to face their evils they get a free pass everytime why do villains get portrayed as the good guys it’s genuinely revolting.
For me going to the movies was a great escape from everyday reality. Am I’m 45. My brothers and I lived at the dive-in and the mall theatre. Movies not are so filled with their political nonsense that is not worth going anymore. Don’t get me wrong. Women are amazing in movies but now these days. Look at Snow White remake. Gross. Something has to change in Hollywood before it destroys itself.
There are plenty of movies where all the woman are super models in supporting roles, it’s what everyone wants. You can just make a video displaying why transformers represents the female role you want on the screen.
What is your opinion on female antiheroes such as Ozark's Wendy Byrde, How To Get Away With Murder's Annalise Keating, Scandal's Olivia Pope, The American's Elizabeth Jennings, and Homeland's Carrie Mathison? These female characters adopted traits that made male character's such as The Soprano's Tony Soprano, The Wire's Don Little, Mad Men's Don Draper, and Breaking Bad's Walter White interesting flawed characters. In real life, these people would be considered objectively unlikable but onscreen they are praised for being great characters who drive their stories. Do you think female characters should be able to adopt antiheroic traits that made male antiheroes fascinating and charismatic?
The more that the Woke female characters we have now are written this way, the more the corresponding male characters are written as if they are CUCKED, hence the fact that I, and others like me, won't watch these DEI/ESG-driven characters, because they are uber cringe-worthy and lazily written.
That was before the MCU became what it is today, the crazy feminist writers were not present at the time. That shift started happening after Captain Marvel was released. Look at Daredevil's Karen Page, an incredibly well written character who we knew from the beginning was going through some shit but she was hiding it. She wasn't a jerk about it, she was relatable and never got angry for no reason or petty reasons like these characters do nowadays . She also had to face the consequences of her actions just like any other character would.
I remember reading an article saying Jessica Jones would have done better if she hadn’t suffered. (This same person wrote an article saying they should make Professor X and Magneto Black)
The problem isn’t feminism, it’s men (and women) who can’t write compelling female characters. The boys may come at me for this, but any other reason for hating modern female characters is sexist
She-Hulk was such garbage. Super lazy writing. Not only don't they hire an attorney as a story consultant but they don't even bother researching or watching good law shows or movies. It was an idiotic show that hopefully ruins all the writer's future careers.
I think this change goes back even further to around 2001. It may be hard to believe for the youngins these days but I believe the events of September 11th, 2001, fundamentally changed our culture. The reason: then president George W. Bush launched 2 wars, Afghanistan and Iraq. Suddenly, the US was hyper patriotic in a way it wasn't before and warriors were lauded. That warrior mentality seeped into our culture including story telling. If you watch the Star Wars prequels, especially Yoda, and then watch the original Yoda, the difference is striking. Post 9/11 Yoda was a warrior archetype, but 1980 Yoda was a wise mentor archetype. Many movies became utterly bland as every character has to be a warrior. Eventually, the warrior archetype seeped into the female characters as well. What you're seeing today is a lack of imagination: all female characters must be strong warriors (a traditional male archetype). Look, the occasional female warrior is fine (classical Athena), but where are the Aphrodite's (seductress), where is the feminine (Hera, Artemis). You only need look at Greek mythology to see the richness that we're missing in our stories by making everyone, male and female into Mars, the warrior.
I think the only reason is that these movies are made for 13 year olds (cause they're the ones who pay for the movies the most)... so... they're at 7th grade level story and character development.
I think this title's a bit too broad. Not ALL modern female characters suck, although the ones that do have no flaws and therefore no character development. Black Widow on the other hand is one example of a great modern female character. It's ironic that all the toxic male tropes of the 80s macho men - Aggressive, violent, showing no emotion, etc - have been pasted onto these female characters and we're just told by Hollywood this is what makes women strong. Garbage. Beating people up doesn't make anyone strong, it makes them a bully and therefore weaker. Showing no emotion doesn't equal strong, just emotionally compressed. This isn't progress, it's regression. It's not feminism either, because it's false representation of what that movement even is by people who don't understand it. I'm not a feminist myself but I do know false representation when I see it (I'm looking at you Disney, Pixar, and pretty much every movie that's politics first, story second, because politics sells now).
Why are make characters so terrible….. 1. They no longer have agency 2. They no longer have a spine and won’t defend themselves 3. The are always at fault and the only redemptive arcs they can have is to become more effeminate versions of themselves 4. They are always terrible fathers and husbands who only drive away the people they care about 5. They are always the buffoons and himbo’s So here are just a few reasons.
If you want to see great female characters, look at the 1940s movies. They were strong protagonists yet 100% women. The female characters today are just male characters played by women.
I'm confused about your point... Are you saying that females should NOT be villains? It seems like you cannot find these characters relatable unless they are soft, nurturing, and empathetic (which is the antithesis of true psychopathy). If that is your assertion I wholeheartedly disagree with you. I'm writing a story about a female serial killer who is all kinds of evil, misanthropic, and self-centered (and unapologetically so). I don't believe that placing females in this fictional role is indicative of "lazy writing".
Galadriel seems like the big screen version of Greta Thunberg. The deep sadness, loneliness, and helplessness both involuntarily convey, is almost unbearable.
indeed, the ring of power version is more like a child in a adult body, constantly yelling, emotionally weak, throwing tantrum and being condescended toward anybody (like a certain girl ), contradict heavily to the lady galadriel we love in lotr and the hobbit

Just saw the actress Amber Midthunder give an interview about "Prey" the Predator prequel on Hulu. She plays Naru a girl who wants to hunt and not do women's work. The predator is incredibly stupid but Naru with tomahawks on ropes is as dangerous as a Navy SEAL.
@@gilgamesh310 a lot of female characters are ass lmao
@@gilgamesh310 Main characters? Can you give an example of current great female characters?
@@BigNews2021 I can't think of any. This person is talking outta their ass.
She-Karen
@MrEmpireBuilder0000 they're literally proud of it, so many clips pr "creatives" and "writers" bragging about never reading the source material.
Yes.
In fact, T1 and T2 Sarah Connor was better written than grandma Sarah Connor in that last one. Yuckkk. She was hyper angry there and a jackass.
We need less dynamic women not more
stop drinking the kool aid woman
... What???@@JM-qn3tf
MARY SUE UNLIKABLE GENERAL.
The anger in these modern female characters is only a reflection of the anger in the feminist writers who have taken over these projects
Just like Velma, you can feel the disdain and spite the writer has for the audience. Their attempt at humor is always mean spirited and condescending
But the one common denominator is the Anger. This is what you get after years of digesting a toxic ideological message. It leaves you a bitter n vindictive person and it can't help but spill into your writing
I think that pretty much sums it up, yep.
I was going to say exactly that. These character traits only mirror the flaws of the writers personalities. These are people I certainly wouldn't want to know. Must be why I refuse to go anywhere near Twitter!
She Hulk was the same.
Correct. Everything about all of this was 100% correct
(no "drop your weapons" even)
4) Indian Peter Pan's first act towards the Darling kids is to point his blade at them.
The female characters written today don't represent anyone regardless of gender
@fightersweep
Well these characters aren't written for women like your wife or the numerous women within geek culture. But what's funny about this is women like your wife are expected to like this stuff because it exist. That's how narcissistic the writers are.
At least Sylvie is never suggested to be a good person. And at least Wanda eventually dropped a castle on herself.
Considering the crimes she committed, all those she murdered, the subjugation, the attempt at killing a young girl for her own benefit, having her 'kill herself' doesn't absolve her, if anything it just cements herself as the narcissist the writers made her into.
@@MrOrcshaman "the writers" didn't turn her into a narcissist. The Darkhold did.
Media just took the male character and just replaced him with a female who can do no wrong
I would personally replace 'anger' with 'aggression', but I know what you're talking about.
The character Valkyrie was LITERALLY a slave trader. She SOLD people into a colloseum to fight to the death. No redemption, no accountability, just smug superiority.
But now she's the King of Asgard, and that was all forgotten.
God I hated that.
So was the tribe of the woman king in her titular movie, and that was conveniently ignored. Why do modern entertainers obsessively idolize the very worst women in either reality or fiction as heroes?

I want to see you do a full take on Sylvie. I loathe her above all others for all the reasons you listed PLUS the selfcest element. Yuck.
It's kinda ironic because most of the female character flops lately seemed like it was done by female writers themselves.
Written by women with a victim complex and a sense of entitlement.
Reva would of been just fine as an angry monster if she had stayed a badguy like she clearly is and was killed by obi wan.
"Modern Female Characters" that don't suck. IMO
Holga Kilgore (Michelle Rodriguez) - Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves
Nik Khan (Golshifteh Farahani) - Extraction II
I don't believe the writer(s) in either movie were trying to make a social statement.
Reva didn't go toe to toe with Vader, he played with her until he stabbed her with her own lightsaber
Anger doesn't just mean they don't know how to write. It also means they don't know how to act.
I think the biggest problem with writers is that they are so naive they don't realize that everyone else isn't as naive as they are.
This is why I hate Strong female characters. Uma Thurman played a better Strong female character in "Kill Bill" than any of these women now.
These characters are timeless. We don't need them jumping on the latest tik tok trend of dance moves that belittle their legitimacy of importance.
Counter examples of female characters that I think were superbly done:
- Babylon 5: Susan Ivanova, Delenn, Lyta Alexander, Na'Toth, Talia Winters, probably others I'm forgetting
- Daredevil: Karen Page, Claire Temple, Elektra
- Lost: Kate Austin, Claire Littleton, Sun, Rose, Juliet
- Crouching Tiger,Hidden Dragon: Shu Lien, Jen
- Alien series: Ellen Ripley
- Terminator series: Sarah Connor
Valeria from Conan the Barbarian also comes to mind.
Babylon 5 had AMAZING female (and male) characters!
Both the main lead of Arcane is masterfully written too
Laurie Strode from Halloween movies
You just described Naru from last year's Prey to a T. But, before you watch Prey, please do yourself a favor and watch the first three Predator films. Anyways, thank you for the video and I'm looking forward to the next part of this video!
Oh c’mon
How often could that she-hulk actress get cat called!?!?
I doubt ever.
This remind me of Katniss Everdeen. She as a protagonist is so incredible in Hunger Game series.
I swear everything you said in this video was 100% correct
Great video, can’t wait for the one on the male counterparts….
Thank you. I hate this modern character and I was having trouble defining it other than snapping at everyone all the time.
Tahnk you for suming it up so well. basicaly what you siad i why modern female characters are so bad.
I think you should've included Niobi/Pinket-Smith from the Matrix. Perhaps the beginning of it all.
I love your content. I feel everything is very well thought out and written!
Glad you enjoy it!
Anger is at least more fitting for evil characters especially in Star Wars as you mentioned Reeva but you have a point for the heroes.

finally someone agrees with me and most importantly a women like i don't care if a female character is strong or whatever hell i sometimes enjoy when they are, but what i don't like is how angry they are all the time and cocky and mean and just act like they are better then everybody and they are right all the time and if they make a mistake it's not their fault, and another reason is when they gain power without any sort of training or struggle or anything, a prime example is Rey from star wars unlike Luke where he had to train and basically go through hell and lose a hand to get power, Rey just immediately gained power without any training or struggle or suffering or anything like Luke.
“Discount Galadriel” killed me and it’s so true too
It's because they are poorly done examples of activism bleeding into art.
If you look up the history of feminism in America it actually rhymes with these types of women. Interesting parallel.
It is so bad that I can't interest an agent into reading my querry.

Wholeheartedly agree.
there are people online that want to see people angry all the time.
I would like to "thank" Disney for making Captain Marvel and She-Hulk the 2 most hated characters in the MCU the most powerful ones.

Another thing that gets me is these characters are horrendously dull and unfunny. Wit, humor, and charm are dead

What? Did you even watch the video?
I mean... what is the mindset of snow white ? 《The world owe me love. Soon my prince will come》.
This expectation level is typically disney princessy
Ahsoka Tano. Modern female character.
the problem is they are awful characters and the weird thing is they arent perfect.
tbh, I didn't hate Sylvie, but found her uninteresting compared to Tom Hiddleston and all his "mirror" versions.
mcu jessica jones was decent...
@@superjboy16 Daysi Johnson suffers a lot and made mistakes.
I remember reading an article saying Jessica Jones would have done better if she hadn’t suffered. (This same person wrote an article saying they should make Professor X and Magneto Black)

BTW it's Reva, not Riva. It's based on the superior #OldRepublic Character Revan.
A good breakdown
Sad, but the only explanation i can imagine that modern female characters are written this way is that the writers themselves are this obnoxious.
Where’s Captain Marvel??????
1. They no longer have agency
2. They no longer have a spine and won’t defend themselves
3. The are always at fault and the only redemptive arcs they can have is to become more effeminate versions of themselves
4. They are always terrible fathers and husbands who only drive away the people they care about
5. They are always the buffoons and himbo’s
So here are just a few reasons.
100% correct IMO.
#GoodnessMeHere!
I don't believe that placing females in this fictional role is indicative of "lazy writing".
no, same woman did look like that
Galadriel seems like the big screen version of Greta Thunberg.
Keeping the grift going
You're sad, man. XD
