012 QO-100 Reach a geostationary satellite on Wi Fi frequency (Part 1)

- Cross-posted video from my main channel (Because it is HAM related)
This is the start of a bonus video series and probably not for everybody. We will build a satellite station to reach the geostationary QO-100 Amateur Satellite 36’000km away. In the end, I should be able to talk to other amateurs using this ground station.
First, I did not plan to make this video, but many of my viewers asked for it. And, because such a complex project will cover many areas, you might profit from one or the other episode even if you are a typical maker and no Radio Amateur.

I would definitely watch all of such a series. That being said do what makes you happy and enjoy doing.
In my age I have no other choice. Life is too short ;-)
As a fellow amateur radio operator I really enjoy this content and will follow along.
I am glad to read that!
Absolutely! Getting that 200km on 800MHz is already mindboggling. 36.000km on 2.4GHz is .. wow. I remember some guys using regular Linksys wifi 2.4GHz routers and a high gain antenna to cover 382km in 2008 I believe, so this is in a completely different league.
Here we use smaller bandwidth. So it is easier. Plus the satellite is very sensitive.
'easier' :-) We will see. Really looking forward to it Andreas.
For me this feels like communication to the Voyager satellite that you are trying to do. Maybe I should get my license again and see what it's all about lately.
With a license we have a lot of new possibilities for experimenting.
Please so continue with this series, it looks very interesting!
:-)
Absolutely interested, please continue, Andreas.
Thank you for the feedback!
Very exciting to see the project working 👍pls continue
I will!
Excellent, I've been waiting for more satellites content
Enjoy!
Perhaps SSB really stands for Swiss Side Band, a peculiar accent present with some HAM operators! -- Yes, please continue the series.
Never heard of this definition. But I like it!
Yes, please continue ! This subject is part of my interest since longer and I definitively want to get up and QRV on QO-100 !
Maybe we create once a "UA-cam round" on the satellite.
Andreas, I think this is a very cool project. I am interested in seeing the rest of this series!
Thank you for your feedback!
You're welcome! I really enjoy all of your videos and these more technical ones are very interesting to me.
Yes, definitely continue. Hope to work you on QO100 from the north pole (Svalbard) in April.
Cool! I have been there once (by ship)
yes continue !!!!! 😃😃😃😃😃 I was HB9TXA some years ago. I unfortunately had to stop because of my work.
I also stopped for many years. Now I am back again!
Yes This is the information that I need. I am HAM Radio Licensed and want very much to utilize the satellites,
So far I only work with the QO-100...
lets go for part 2
:-)
Yes, please. I may be well outside of the satellite's footprint, but it's still fascinating!
73 de N1FNE
Indeed, you are outside. But maybe Elon Musk has mercy for you ;-)
Your technical knowledge is must for all of us! Please cotinue this interesting series. Thanks a lot for your effort.
Thanks, will do!
Great choice to make a separate wireless related channel. Your series inspired me to work on q0-100 and I’m now qrv for almost a year on the sat. I was once able to work you as well! Keep up the good work Andreas! 73 PA5MR! Btw with a good antenna 5 watts is more than enough to reach the bird!
Yes, I remember the QSO. 73
Very interested in this series by you!
Thank you!
I will are interested you to continue such video ? Yes of course. Very happy to find on Internet such material and would like to learn more :) (sorry for my swiss accent as well😊
You should already find about 6 additional parts on the channel (with a playlist)
A couple of years back the local ham radio association in my city organized a call with antartica (via internet), it was very nice experience but now this gets interesting to get to talk to them via satellite.
International Space Station is much closer but talking to astronauts would be more hyping. Just saying...
Great content, I had missed this one, regards!
You are right with the astronauts. But from a technical point of view this is more challenging.
@@HB9BLA Although the ISS does have the added challenge that you're trying to hit a moving target and the associated doppler shifting of the frequencies.
More please! Very interested!
Thank you!
yes continue , sending data over so long distances more or less DIY is very interesting
I agree. This is why I started this project!
I am only at 0:45, but my answer is YES - continue.
:-)) Thank you!
yes please continue making this type of content :)
:-)
I would watch this series in any case.
I am more on HF but, QO-100 made me curious on Ham Satellites in general.

The QO-100 is the coolest satellite from my point of view.
Definitely interested!
:-)
Please continue, QO-100 is on my To-Do list as well. 73 de OE5IDT
You are in its footprint. So it should be no problem!
Of course you should continue! :)
:-)
Yes definitely continue. We might get more into the hobby. 73 2E0YQC
That would be good!
I would love to see the whole series for sure.
Glad to read that!
Yes please more would be great
:-)
Please continue, I'm very interested in learning more about this link. 🙂
Will do!
Do you know how long the Swiss Amateur will be on station in Antarctica? I'm definitely on board for seeing what you come up with in this project! 73!
Because this video is cross-posted from my main channel he is already back. Now, Karsten, a German HAM is there for the next 6+ months.
Yes, please continue.
:-)
I’ll stayed tuned! 73’s de ON8NP
Cool! 73
Very interesting
Glad you think so!
Yes please. Thank you for your very interesting videos. All the best from "Schwarzwald".
You are welcome, neighbour!
Hey Andreas, please carry on with this work. I like hardcore RF, uplink and downlink demonstrations and appreciate your work. Massive thumbs up from me!
Thank you! Here you should get your weekly dose of RF ;-)
Yes, Certainly interesting video. I appreciate your efforts to educate hams & SWLs round the world. Applaud Continue to post 🎥
Thanks, will do!
Yes, please.
:-)
Hi. I have been Googling QO-100 and find very little information that makes sense to me. This first video explains it in a very simple way, thank you. I will definitely watch the entire series.
Enjoy the series!
YES!
:-)
First
:-)
Nice. I might have to get several more paying jobs, just so that I can work on things like this. :-) (let me know if you know of anyone who is willing to pay for and EE to do remote work)
You are right. This is an expensive project :-(
Ohhh Yea! Hope to see more! 73 DE W8LV BILL
Thank you for your feedback!
Absolutely continue! Very much an interest of mine.

Cool. Thank you for your feedback!
Dear Andreas, for sure you should continue. We learn so much from you. Keep Up! :) 73! DE1CTL
Thanks, will do!
Wow! I always wanted to see this type of videos. Thanks for making such a video like this, please continue this.
Thank you, I will
Yes please!
:-)
We want more! I'd like more of this series.
The whole project is available on his main channel, this video is a re-upload from there!
@@Alan2E0KVRKing Doh! I've seen tho older ones, I was hoping there was some new content about this case or perhaps a second version.
Alan is right (I noted it in the show notes). I cross-posted all HAM relevant videos because I expect many hams are not subscribed to the main channel. All blue content with hat is cross-posted
Yes! Please continue. I am heating the iron and wait for more. vy 73 DG2MY
Cool. You are in its footprint. So you can do the project!
YES, PLEASE! Although I am outside the footprint of QO-100, I find this very interesting.
That is bad luck. Maybe it will change one day.
yes keep going ... I'm a ham and in one way or another want to learn about all of the subjects you present. More is better.
I hope the channel will live for a long time...
This is a very interesting topic, I would definitely watch a video series based on it. Satellite communication is one of my ham radio interests but I have not considered trying something like this.
A geostationary satellite is particularly interesting because it is available all the time...
Yes please continue I am very interested. Thank you
David
Will do!
What a great idea ! Of course you can guess my answer... please do continue !
Thanks, will do! (I am sure you know ;-)
Very interesting topic. I hope you continue with it. Thank you!
Thank you, I will
Yes, please continue this series. 73 KE0YAL
I will! 73
Hope your finger gets better !
Thank you!
I would be very interested in seeing this as a series, far better than some others 5 min over view!
You will get it!
Can you publish a list of everything needed so we can build long ?
I will try.
Fascinating. Please continue the project!
I will!
Please continue! I love space and it's one of the main reason I took a HAREC exam
This is probably the coolest space project currently available. At least for me...
Please continue this series.

I will!
Please continue. 73 de OZ1GNN
I will!
You transmitted the radio at 2.4GHz. Is that Q0100 Qatar Telecom satellite's transponder operates at 2.4GHz receiver?
The satellite receives at 2.4 and transmits at 10GHz
@@HB9BLA yes Sir, I understood after I watched all your 6 series QO-100.
Yes, please continue with this series. DE WA1KLI
Thank you for your feedback!
You are obligated to make a series here because you put (part 1) in the title
:-)) You are right!
Yeah, let's have THE guy with the swiss accent talk to the other guy with a swiss accent on top of a 72Mm path ;)
:-)
Sure, go ahead! We always learn something on the way
Thank you for your feedback!
This would be a really worthwhile video series and well appreciated I am sure.
Thank you!
I look forward to the rest of the videos. I am a retired RF engineer so this is real interesting for me.
Indeed, that is an exciting technology. To have a ground station for a geostationary satellite on my roof is more than I wished when I was young!
This is incredibly cool. I would love for you to keep this series going.
Thank you! That's the plan!
please do continue... I'm in!
I will!
Most definitely interested in this series. 73
:-) 73
Awesome, please continue the series.
Thank you!
Excellent idea for a project
Indeed, I had a lot to learn...
I would be interested in this topic
Thank you for your feedback!
Need more videos
The whole project is available on his main channel, this video is a re-upload from there!
Alan is right. As written in the video description.
@@HB9BLA I know. I was just saying we need more videos all the time 😂😂 can't get bored listening to the guy with the Swiss accent.
Yes! Very interesting topic!
Glad you think so!
Hello Andreas, I am looking forward to this new project. Please produce it,
Thanks, VE7AHL.
Unfortunately, you are not in its footprint. But maybe Elon Musk once puts one above the US...
@@HB9BLA like you said, there may be parts of your video that maybe helpfull elsewhere. Keep up the good work.
Thanks Steve.
You can watch the series if you click to the playlist.
Please continue with the series!

WOW!!! Are your aims following Moore's law? If yes, what can we expect in 2023??? It seems to me that at least Flight to the Moon!
:-)) (...and back as Kennedy said)
Why you reupload videos? At least tag these as reuploads, so I know what videos I must watch amongst all these reuploads.
You see the difference: The re-uploaded are with hat and the picture on the left and the new ones are without a hat, my portrait on the right side, and a different shape of the title.
I re-upload the HAM-related videos of my first channel because I expect many different viewers on this channel (the topics are quite different). And it is mentioned in the first line of the comment.
4:34 sound like Taliban
I did not know they speak French ;-)
@@HB9BLA see, usually I have no problem recognizing French (not that I speak on it), but I would have never guessed if not your comment (:
