  • What does retirement fell like? Is it everything we expected? But, what about those things that we did not expect and surprised us?

My brother retired at 55. He is turning 67 this year. He said he always has things to do. He keeps a to do list on his phone. He will look through his list and decide what, if anything, he wants to do that day. Plus with the freedom of time he has, he exercises on a regular basis. That keeps him fit and in good health.

I just gave my 60 day notice at 59 years old. Excited and happy but a bit nervous about money, even though I've been over my numbers backwards and forwards for months. Over the last few months I've been developing new hobbies and fun side hustles that make a little extra money, started selling cash secured puts, would love to see more of your videos about that. Also looking at various income dividend ETFs. I definitely relate to the Sunday dread. I've noticed I tend to rush to get things done on my days off. Looking forward to not needing to rush anymore.

you will have to let us know how it feels once you retire. I also relate to the concerns about money. Like you, I run numbers constantly. I feel like this will abate as I move through time and get more comfortable.
Hope you have had good results trading puts. Now that I am retired, I am changing my strategy to focus on managing tax. As such, will only be trading in my IRAs. I have been selling puts to buy in with my retirement money. I am thinking about doing a video that shows the composition of my portfolio. I don think I am comfortable sharing numbers, but percentages and structure maybe interesting to the other DIY people out there.
Thanks for the comment. All the best in your retirement.

The Sunday dread thing is spot on. Folks look forward to the weekend all the work week when in fact it is really only a few hours of freedom if that.

You are exactly right. I would be tired Friday evening. Run errands on Saturday and start the dread on Sunday. So glad I am off that treadmill.
      Thanks for watching.

I'm about a month into retirement as well. I'm also losing track of which day of the week it is already. I notice that I'm more aware of my surroundings...colors, nature, scents...etc.. I do not miss work in the slightest. I'm far more relaxed. I can't fathom ever being bored and I sure as heck could not go back to endless meetings all day. I love it and am glad I found the courage to make the jump. It wasn't an easy decision.

I can relate. Because time is less of a constraint, I find myself taking things slower, which makes me more aware of my surroundings. I would get so focused at work that you could burst into flames in the elevator next to me and I may not notice.
      Thanks for the comment!

90 days for me same as you with IPhone, IPad and computer was odd not having to constantly deal with e-mail, text messages or calls from customers. After about the first two weeks it dawned on me what do I do now, I had been getting up and going to work since June 1976. My job required me to drive a lot, some days I spent more time driving than at customers locations. I was constantly getting call from other employees asking for my advice or assistance, calls from managers asking me to go and assist another employee. It took me some time to realize that retirement is what I had been planning for, and now I was free to do as I wanted. Weather has kept me inside but as weather gets better I have over 14 acres and have plans to keep me busy, but I can do them on my on schedule.

It is shocking how fast everything just stops. Sounds like you are settling into retirement well. Hope the weather improves soon so you can enjoy more time outside.
      Thanks for sharing.

I did view the entire Life in Vibe. Your commentary is very accurate. You voiced my same concerns about ST.
My point as I plan for retirement, the process is tedious. A lot of doubts creep in. I am rebalancing my portfolio in the next 16 mos before I make the decision to take the plunge. Financial planning is only one piece of the puzzle.
ST was basically forced into retirement. His so called business was DOA in 2020. He was forced to take SS at 62. He clearly never planned for retirement. Then low and behold last year on one of his driving chats, he made claims he has prepared for retirement.
If his channel had gone toward the direction of being forced into taking SS at 62 and this is how I'm getting through it, that would have been interesting. But, ST, says it's easy, a one and done: take SS as early as you can. No other viewpoints are permitted on his channel. No further discussion. Disagree, he pulls you.
Retirement is a personal decision that cannot be distilled down to one simple rule.

I was in a high pressure IT role for years. Sunday scaries are definitely a thing. Because of that, when I retired, I have consciously not planned anything on Mondays if possible. Monday used to be my least favorite day and now it really is my favorite day of the week.

The stress was probably the most surprising part for me. I had no idea how much stress I was under or that it was trying to kill me. Several months later I realized that my health was better than it had been in years and it didn’t take long to figure out why.

I can't agree more. It is insidious how it sneaks up on you and you don't even realize how its negatively impacting you.
