I retired 4 years ago at 58. I lost 50 lbs., exercise every day, and am healthier than I was 20 years ago. I now pursue my pastimes: walking, cooking, art, music, travel, and whatever other paths I want to follow. I'm a widower and have lost a lot of family and friends to the reaper or relocation but am downsizing my life in anticipation to moving to a new place to meet new friends. Retirement is the best thing to happen to me. So, follow Dave's advice, stop worrying, and retire before you think you should.

Interesting story. I too retired at 58 in 2018. I’m now 63. My father died in 2014 at 81 with frontal/temporal dementia and my mother was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s in 2015. I buried her last week, age 90. With so much brain disease in my family, I knew I had to change my lifestyle. In 2022, I lost 73 lbs eating a Keto diet. I eat 2,000 calories of the right foods during 4 hours a day and fast 20 hours a day. I also walk 8 miles every other day. I got off 9 medications I had been on for years and now have the best blood test results ever. I’ve sustained this lifestyle for 3 years, 1 month and 3 days. I wish you the best as you downsize, move and develop new friends.

Retired in 2023 at 57yoa hiked the Appalachian trail it took 6 months.
In September my wife and I are hiking the Camino in Spain. We have had health scares and decided that there is no better time to take advantage of living life ..we will be comfortable but won't be rich. Spending money on the things we value leaving the unnecessary material things behind..wish you all the best on achieving your goals

Regarding not retiring due to world situations, e.g. wars, AI, climate, politics, etc., I'd say this is a good reason to retire and get out in the wilderness, turn off your electronic devices, don't don't listen to all this anxiety inducing noise and you'll be just fine!

Thanks for always making good content that gets people thinking! I just retired at 55 to reduce my stress from a long corporate career. I am fortunate to have a fitness hobby (long distance endurance sports) and will be putting that front and center of my life again. So much so that I will tackle a 300 mile ultramarathon this Spring!
2025 can be that renaissance year for anyone!

Congrats. I just retired last May on my 56th birthday. Like yourself getting back into endurance sports. Spent the fall and this winter dropping 40 lbs. to get back to my competitive weight via walking, hiking and weight training. Now starting to ramp up the running for a late May marathon and then a 320 mile thru-hike of the Superior Hiking Trail in Minnesota in late September. The hike will take me 16 days. I can't imagine doing a 300-mile ultramarathon! My longest run ever was only 30 miles. Good luck.

My original retirement plan was to retire at 67, work part-time, and save money. However, high prices for everything have severely affected my plan. I'm concerned if people who went through the 2008 financial crisis had an easier time than I am having now. The stock market is worrying me as my income has decreased, and I fear I won't have enough savings for retirement since I can't contribute as much as before.

I plan to retire at the end of 2025 at 62 after 36 years in Telecom as a sales engineer. My husband will retire in May 2026 and he’s loving life! But walking away from a good income stream and building the nest egg to living from the nest egg is a scary proposition couple with the alarming recession and CPI report

I will turn 64 in June & am planning on retiring at the end of 2025. I will tread water until I turn 65 & then file for both Social Security & Medicare at the same time. I am looking forward to it & a coworker that retired back in June said it was surreal when it first happened but he is loving it & says he has already lost 16 pounds because of no stress anymore & walking instead of sitting at a desk all day.

Very true what you say here. Love the triangle visions! I retired at age 54 in 2023 when the work environment at my company took a dump after a merger, and have not looked back. I consulted my Excel spreadsheet that I kept for years, two fiduciary financial advisors, and most importantly the software package Boldin to ensure I was able to call it quits.

Earning money is important, but preserving your capital is even more crucial. Once your funds are lost, rebuilding wealth becomes significantly harder. It’s like “missing a train” versus “losing your money”-while there will always be new opportunities, losing your capital could mean the end of the journey.

I’d be retiring or working less in 8 years, and considering this financial recession, I’m deciding to begin taking up skilled trades. I’m curious to know best how people spilt their pay, how much of it goes into savings, spendings or investments, I earn about $140k per year but nothing to show for it yet.

The example of the woman who wasn't sure she could retire with $840K in the short term bucket is hard to fathom. That's a lot of money saved in short term, but that may be a normal amount of savings for your clients. Most people have far less so, it's a question of whether $500K total in our early 60s would be sufficient. I know a lot is dependent on one's monthly costs, butI think the answer isn't usually as clear cut. And the volatility and difficulty in obtaining another position with a good salary make the decision a lot harder.

The simplicity of your advice with health, time, and money is spot on. I truly think the biggest fear I have with making the decision is the emotional piece. Will I find purpose and have a passion that makes me want to get up every day? I get concerned with having too much down time. You can only exercise, travel, eat healthy so much. I fear getting bored!

Glad I found this. I’m 45 in this year. Realistically Im financially ready. But I keep being “greedy” and worrying I don’t have enough. But I know that feeling won’t go away. The thing making me stick to my guns is that one. I always said I would retire the lastest at 45. I want to focus on my heath. And family is getting older. Those are the things I really care about at the end of the day. Once family is gone, you can never get that.
