- Happy Birthday to Benny Andersson who was born on this date in 1946 and who was one of the major driving forces behind the success of ABBA.
"Mamma Mia" by ABBA off of their, self-titled, third album which came out in 1975 and featured Mike Watson on bass.
Lynn and I went down to the city yesterday to see the Radio City Music Hall Christmas Spectacular featuring The Rockettes. While it's not really my thing, it was a good time... better than the last time we went. The last time, 7 years ago, we went to a 2:00pm show on a Saturday and it was the first time I'd ever experienced human grid-lock. There were so many people packed into the area surrounding Radio City and Rockerfeller Center (where the tree is) that you, literally, could not move. We arrived, as advised, an hour early to get on line to get into the show and we still missed the first ten minutes, and they were still seating people 30 minutes into the show which was a bit distracting. This time, we went to the first show of the day, 10:00am. We were on the train at 6:30am and into Grand Central Station before 8:00am. We walked around Grand Central for a bit (it's really an amazing building) and stopped for a light breakfast on the way. Lynn got a big, fancy coffee which was served in a big bowl. When we got to Rockerfeller Center we had a clear view of everything we wanted to see and were able to walk around freely and comfortably. The show was great, but things were starting to get crazy out on the streets as we made our way back to Grand Central to catch our train.
I'm playing the Aria Pro II SB700. I recorded this video a few years back, shortly after I got the bass and it still had the Bartolini replacement p/u that it came with. The original p/u was included with the bass and I had that reinstalled shortly after. I've since sold both of the Aria basses.
I learned this awhile back. Such a fun song to play. Sometimes it’s just fun to hold it down steadily hitting those 8th notes.
Very cool! Truth.
ABBA has really exotic and groove-centric music, especially backed up on the bass' clean rhythm! Cheers for this one!
Totally agree! Thanks!
Back when this song came out if you requested it to be played on the pa in the local Boys Club you would get your butt kicked. Only Deep Purple Black Sabbath and Led Zep filled the pa.
Now as a 62 year old I can appreciate the structure of the song. I just can’t let my childhood friends know.
Thanks for the upload
Haha!
Yeah, it took me many, many years to discover how great these songs really were.
Always a treat to hear you play ABBA. You seem a little bit more Swedish every time you do.
Tack Pook. Du kanske är inne på något, jag har varit sugen på köttbullar på sistone.
Freakin' woah! @@TJH3113
Hello, Troy. I declare myself a great admirer of your work, your sound and your basses. I send you a big hug from Buenos Aires, Argentina!
Wow, thank you so much!
Good Job! I think I told you a little while back that I saw an outstanding Abba tribute (from Sweden) touring the US currently and Mike Watson is actually touring with them. Very cool to see him play these songs he originally recorded.
Thank you! Yes, I really need to check one of these tribute bands out, but it's hard to decide which one. I don't think the one with Mike Watson has come this way.
Great song, and well played. I learned this to play and sing in a cover band in the early 2000s. I like how you have to mute each 8th note to help the rhythm "pump".
Yeah, it's actually one of the more straightforward ABBA tunes but, there are a lot of subtleties happening with the bass-line. Thanks and take care!
Yes! I picked this too as a hell-fun song on bass. Even when all other elements are kinda softy in a ..softy kinda song (Not-that-there's-anything-wrong-with-that) the bass still kicks ass - so beefy, it dominates.
Thanks... I'm glad you liked it.
Morning from Toronto! fun bass line sounds great as usual
Good day! Thanks!
Great stuff. Especially considering it's Benny Anderssons birthday today!
Thank you. Yeah, the video has been sitting around for years so I thought I'd take advantage of Benny's birthday to upload it. I'll do that sometimes, when I can't decide.
Sounds great...those staccato notes and that tone really punch!
Thank you very much!
That was a fun, joyous bass line!
I think that was a great way to describe it.
Such a wonderful bassline, glad to see this played by you Troy
I agree... and thank you.
Thanks Troy for another great ABBA cover, nicely played with a distinctive tone.
As always, it was my pleasure and I thank you for watching and taking the time to comment.
Brings back good memories of when I played bass in the pit orchestra for my school's Mamma Mia musical, I remember watching several of your ABBA covers while trying to learn all the songs for it, they were super helpful. Keep up the good work
Very cool! Thanks a lot!
Found your bass covers for Rush, but love the Abba covers and more!
Welcome!
Like this..all of youre Abba covers like Abba great job Troy😊
Thanks so much!
Thanks Troy, good stuff as always. I appreciate the very gentle hammer-ons. More like tap-ons really.
You bet! When I first listened to the song I didn't think there was much to it. As I listened more closely, all of the subtleties came to light - the staccato, the muting, the slide-ups/hammer-ons... really give life to the bass-line.
Cool part!
Agreed!
Nice!
Thank you!
Very nice bassline and very nice cover. Thank you for this video Troy ;-)
Many thanks Jonathan!
Yessssss the aria is out , fantastic
It had been a while.
This cover hit the spot. I've been on the biggest ABBA binge this year listening and relistening to all their albums and also have been revisting your ABBA covers through out the year. As always you did amazing! You really nail those slightly muted staccato 8th notes in the verses, they're so smooth sounding.
Glad you had fun seeing the rockettes! Sounded like chaos the first time, glad it was a much more pleasant experience this time around.
Thanks so much. I really have enjoyed all of the ABBA covers I've done.
Yeah, the key was getting there as early as we did... and on a weekday.
Great work once again! I did not know Mike Watson played the bass line, I assumed it was Gunnar Whatshisname.
Thank you very much. Sometimes, it's hard to tell them apart.
VERY NICE
THANK YOU
Love it! Great job Troy. Loving the Aria as well. I found one for sale but it's in Japan. I don't trust the shipping process! Anyway, thanks for posting.
Thank you Sam! They were incredible basses. I had a bass shipped from England and got it in a few days. I think you'd be alright if you were buying from a reputable dealer, but there are still a lot of things that could go wrong. Set an alert of Reverb and be ready to strike when something comes up for sale in the US. That's what I did. Great deals still do pop up, but they go quick.
Very nice Troy!
Thank you Rob!
What a fun tune! I never realized before how great the bass line is - thank you Troy!
Glad you liked it!
Fantastic as always!
Thank you, as always.
This was THE song when I was a kid that made me want to play bass. It’s not particularly challenging or Geddy Lee- but this was the start for me. ❤ Thanks for playing it!
That's very cool. It happened a bit in reverse for me. I started out with Kiss, Black Sabbath, Rush, and then a bunch of progressive stuff. It was only until much more recently that I found an appreciation for ABBA and a lot of other "Pop" music as well. I really do love ABBA.
Aria sounds fab Troy.
Thanks a lot!
Great work as usual my friend.
Thanks so much.
Awesome job!
Thank you!
Total banger!
I'm glad you liked it!
ABBA puts me in a time machine, back to when music was pure and respectable. Those women's voices sound so good together, it's almost as if their singing is the equivalent of someone running an ice cube up and down my back! No computers or plugins here, just pure talent! Speaking of which, excellent playing and articulation. I enjoyed your hammer on slides 0:54 in the pre chorus (?), along with the pumping verse groove 🤘!!
Yeah, I could listen to them all day long. I'm really glad that so many people are noticing the subtle things going on in the bass-line.
You did mamma Mia amazing! I also wish you did honey honey, it has an amazing bass.🎸
Thanks! I'll check it out.
Such a huge classic.
Truth.
What a brilliantly inventive Bassline, Brilliantly executed. Thanks for sharing.
On the surface, it's a very simple bass-line, but there are some subtle things that are really important. Thank you for watching and taking the time to comment.
Always a delight to see you playing !
Thank you very much!
Great tune, I've always liked this one. That Aria sounds great, think you'll ever get another?
Cool! Thanks, it was a great bass (I think they were the two best built basses that I owned). Their voices were just a bit too meek for me. It's doubtful that I'll get another because I got both of these for really great prices and I doubt deals like that will come around again.
Great bass cover from the legendary Swedish band, Aria's bass is a good vintage piece that sounds much better for this cover
Thank you very much!
I hope it's going well, she dragged me through the musicals too. See you on the other side, soldier.
I really don't mind... Happy wife/Happy life and all that.
Great playing on this one Troy as always! 😊 Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to You and Lynn. How Are you celebrating?
Thank you Julius! We wish you the same! No celebration to speak of, it will just be a treat to say up past 7:00 on a Sunday. I might even make it until 10:00!
I’m primarily a rock and metal guy and I wouldn’t have described myself as an ABBA fan (though I never outright disliked their music) until I learned to play Lay All Your Love on Me purely by accident while I was using Rocksmith videos on UA-cam to learn songs when I was starting to play bass. They have had fantastic bass players and they’re great songs for practicing octaves on, particularly Gimme! Gimme! Gimme!
I’m not sure if you take requests but I’ve been listening to a lot of David Crosby recently and I was wondering if you could do Laughing from the If I Could Only Remember My Name album?
Yeah, ABBA's got some incredible songs under their belt for sure!
Thanks for the suggestion. I'll check it out.
Mary Chrysler, Troy!
Same to you!
I clicked on this thinking it was mamma mia by maneskin! I was pleasantly surprised. You should check out maneskins mamma Mia as well. It’s got a great baseline.
I'd never heard of maneskin until reading your comment and then saw a post on social media about their bass player earlier today.
@@TJH3113 lol that’s a funny coincidence! Their bassist is quite talented, like you!
Tashanie dont bother me its a kpop/ hip hop old song the bass line from this music its amazing, please check
I'll check it out. Thanks for the suggestion.
Can you do a Special Z cover?
Never heard of them but I'll try to check them out.
@@TJH3113 it's the anime opening form jujutsu kaisen season 2
Was it Gunnarsson at the original?
You nailed it anyway 😊
I think it was Mike Watson.
Thank you
Is it from Rutger Gunnarson (the original line)?
According to Wikipedia, it was Mike Watson on this one.
