Looks amazing so far! Very informative video - thanks so much for sharing. I'm new to customising and have three dolls to work on from Blythe Homes! Excited to see how she turns out!
Thank you for doing these videos! I have only tried once to redo the face on a Tangkou? Several years ago, but I was too timid and didn’t really know what I was doing. She looks lovely with her eyes shut but when they are open she just looks startled, lol. I think I’m going to have to have another go. I recently, thanks to the encouragement from watching your videos, ordered and replaced the body of a Blythe doll I bought a while ago and now I’m thinking of getting a complete bare doll to attempt customising again. It’s great that you share where you get your tools and the products from that you use since, where I live in Scotland, it’s hard to find these things. I enjoy your wonderful videos, thank you for sharing, and I look forward to the next step :D
Oh thank you very much! ^_^ I've been looking at my first custom Blythe and thinking I might sand her face and re-sculpt her a little too. Well done! I love the totally blank dolls, they really helped give me the confidence to practice more! Yes it can be so hard to find the same things I see lots on lots of other dolly channels, I'm in Scotland too! I wonder if you're close by? ^_^
I have a blythe doll too and ive been keeping her since i bought her.....and planning to customize her face...acually my first time...soo nervous😅😅😅love you videos as always....work queen😍😍😍
Oooh! 🤩 Have you customised any other kinds of doll before? I totally recommend buying a spare faceplate to practice on if you’re nervous, I’ve seen them for just a couple of pounds on AliExpress, and they’re great for testing your materials on, see what works best for you 😁 Best of luck when you take the plunge!! Thank you so much for watching and taking time to comment!! ☺️
yes im a bout to try my first Custom of a: Wednesday Adams Blythe - so i have the main doll kit set sorted so-far - but yes i see they give you a decent amount of plastic in the thickness of the face plate around the nose and lip area there, to sculpt the nose or lips - aside from using/ sculpting with Epoxy Putties like milliput - which is what i usually customize Action Figures with or Tamyia Epoxy Putty. but yes indeed i have my own dremel tool and tool bits there to give things a go with ☺
Excellent!! I loved customising my own Wednesday ^_^ I recommend holding the face plate up to a light periodically while sculpting, so you can see the thinnest/brightest areas to be careful with - but as you say there's always epoxy! Hope you have fun with her! ^_^
ahh yes indeed - i saw you do that in one of your other videos there, yes with thin plastic in some areas you can run out of material fast. but indeed to build areas up in other ways - say building up the bridge of the nose higher there's your epoxy putties, or for filling in any miss haps, i suppose☺
She’s definitely coming along beautifully. I have a question 🙋🏽♀️ what grade sand paper do you recommend for sanding, I’ve tried different ones and it’s not working out as I would like. I’m a beginner trying to do just basic customization. I love your channel 🥰
Thank you so much!! I think I was too heavy on the grit when I sanded this one, so would say something like 400 and up? The ones you can use wet are great, and they get very high grit numbers, which you'll want to use for smoothing everything out. I've been recommended to use the Magic Erasers (wet or dry) for finishing off too! ^_^
Try getting some even finer grit sandpaper, they can get incredibly fine, almost to the point you can polish the surface with them! The types I buy now are numbered 400 and 600, but I am going to try to get 800+ next. Hope that helps! I have a new custom video due out on the 8th which shows a new technique to try out too! ^_^
I'm so glad they're helpful! I'm often trying out new things, but recently my go-to tools are straight and curved wood carving tools, a little rotary tool use, and the rotary tool bits fastened into a pin vice handle. I also like to use a drill bit in the pin vice handle to define the nostrils. I'm finding I use more hand tools than electric as I progress. Hope that helps!
Oh yes I certainly recommend it! I found the OB24 is a little taller than the Azone, and the OB22 is a little smaller, so if you have a few Blythes it's nice to mix up their heights a bit! ^_^
@@BethRamsden yay...ikr it’s gonna be a blast.. may I ask if you can buy extra bits for a rotary tool, I’ve got one like yours but a different brand...do they all work with any brand bits? Ps. You’re so fun to watch... I could watch you craft all day 💖😻
@@LittleCraftyKitty Oh yes, half the bits I use in mine are super cheap (sold as being for manicures?! ) from amazon, my rotary tool has different sized insertable 'grips' for the bits, so I can use anything from teeny tiny drill bits to larger sanding drums. I've some links in the FAQ, linked in the description, but I suggest a variety of grits, from 600 up to around 1200 (highest numbers used to finish off the face)
also, is there an alternative to spray painting the face after carving/sanding? can you paint over the face with the same pastel chalks you use to do the makeup?
I start usually with a 400 grit, and work up from there as things smooth out (600, 800, 1000, 1200). Yes, definitely check out more of my customising videos (I have a playlist of just the ones with carving/faceups) I use pan pastels mostly nowadays. Also, I have lots of useful links in my FAQ page at bethramsden.com ^_^
I use a Dremel at the moment, it's just a rotary tool, which is made by many other brands. I have more detail and links in my FAQ page at bethramsden.com

I haven't had Middie's head off yet but I'd imagine there would have to be some modification to get them to fit together. Ive seen a few really nice jointed bodies on Petite Blythe's online, but am struggling to find out what they all are, I find the Petite body (on the fakies at least) to be pretty flimsy feeling. Thanks again! ^_^
Hello Beth, I have just discovered your videos and find them inspiring. I want to learn how to customise my own 12inch Blythe doll. I been on to the Ali Express website But can you please suggest which kit I buy to start with. Which body is the best ? I would also like to buy spare face plates to practice on as a complete novice. It would also be good to get one with all the components so I can practice taking it apart. I would be most grateful for your advice. Kind regards Lorraine
Hi Lorraine! I have a FAQ here that has links and answers some of your questions: bethramsden.com/faq Personally I would advise getting a Blythe on a jointed body, like you see in this video. I'd avoid the very cheap ones (£4), as I find the eyes impossible to remove. The ones that are around £17-30 should be just fine. The shop I link in my FAQ sells face plates, eye chips, all the individual parts! Hope that helps for now! Best of luck and I hope you have fun with it!! ^_^
Thank you! No I didn’t to begin with, as it’s pretty difficult to get here. At the moment I use liquid MSC in a jar, diluted for use with an airbrush, which works beautifully!
Was the top lip reconstructed just by carving (taking away)? Or did you perhaps build up the top lip with apoxie clay? It looks much fuller under her nose. What a wonderful job on that mouth!!
Yes! It was all subtractive sculpting, nothing extra added ☺️ I’ve often wondered that myself about other peoples customs, carving can change the appearance so much!
Thank you! It’s shown more closely at 3:52 but the brand is Einhell. I now use a cordless Dremel. I have links in the FAQ on my website if you’d like to know more! 😊
hello, you did an amazing job! I was wondering what brand of paint and what color reference do you use to paint her complexion? Sorry for my english, i’ m french 😅
Thank you! I have descriptions and links to most of the things I use regularly here in my FAQ: bethramsden.com/faq As for reference, I suppose my experience as a portrait painter means it's kind of built in to me now, but if you create a kind of mood board, of other dolls that you like the look of, you can use them as your reference. I hope that helps! Please feel free to ask any more questions ^_^

Hi! I have quite a lot of videos about Blythe shoes, check out the videos on my channel page. I also share sewing patterns and tutorials for making them yourself 🪡🧵👍
Hello, you designed it really well! I love it! 😍Can I ask something? After sanding her face, did you do anything other than apply varnish to remove the marks? Or do the sanding marks only go away with the varnish you recommend?
Thank you! You’ll need to remove all the marks before varnishing. Use increasing grit numbers, finer and finer until the face is smooth. It’s the most tedious part of the process unfortunately! Once smooth, you can wash and prep the face for colour 😁👍🏻
Waiting for my Blythe to come from AliExpress to experiment and customize her, what I have a problem is with most bodies, most bodies that are to my liking are resin and I don’t want to work with resin
Hi Beth! Do you have a link or a search term you used to find the shop Blythe Homes on AliExpress? I tried searching the name on the website to find the shop, but it isn't coming up for me. Thank you!
Hi! Good question actually! I’m not sure how I found them the first time, but here’s a full description of one of their newly added items ‘DBS Dream Fairy Pocket Doll Blind Box animal toy anime doll kawaii model Figure collection’ Hopefully that’ll help you find them. I follow the shop in the AliExpress app, so it helps find them again 😁 No problem!
@@BethRamsden thanks for taking the time to answer I was amazed at the finished result I think it’s one of the most beautiful types of crafts you can do, I like to design and create there clothes. One day soon I will try to customize a factory doll like you do.
I know this is an old video but...how do you not mess up? What do you do if you mess up? I have an icy doll I got years ago and would love to try customizing her but I don't wanna mess her up. You just go in with tools 😳. Have you ever messed up?
I guess I wasn’t too scared since it’s a relatively cheap doll 😅 I haven’t really messed any up, though I am tempted to go back and re-sculpt my first couple of dolls! 😆
@@BethRamsden I'd love to see videos of that! Also if you could maybe do a video where you do some minimal or practice art? I don't know if I'm quite ready to take apart and sand my dolls face...maybe some alternative temporary ideas? Ooh a hair style tutorial would be nice! Mine has long blonde hair and it's so different from normal doll or human hair (I have the blonde ICY doll wish I could show photos here of her her name is Quincy)
I wash the plates in soapy water, with a magic eraser sponge. For the dark skin colours it's recommended to wipe away the dust with a little vaseline on a cotton ball, before washing. That really helps grab all the tiny particles - the face should be really well sanded first though, with very high grit sandpaper.
Amazing work. I love the idea of customising a fake doll but the idea of face carving scares me quite a bit. Looking forward to seeing the face up. Also interested to see someone not using Mr Super Clear on their Blythe head.
Thank you very much! I have never changed the face of my authentic Blythe, too scared! I'm much happier learning on the fakies. Truth be told I'm too stingy to pay the prices I've seen to have it shipped here, coupled with my fear of clogged cans now...I was really delighted with how the Vallejo varnish worked though! ^_^
Hi! I am trying to customize a Blythe with the same skin complexion but the sanding process leaves the skin bruised and with many white spots, how can I fix that? It worked right with my previous dolls with lighter complexions.
Ah yes I know what you mean! I am certain I mention it somewhere in another video, but I was told after this video to try using a 'magic eraser' sponge (I think it's a melamine sponge?) wet or dry, or both! after rubbing a small amount of vaseline all over the face. apparently the vaseline grabs all the fine white dust from sanding, and the sponge helps to clean it all away. you can give the face a wash in soapy water after that too. It seems the white marks are a problem when sanding darker skin, but this tip should really help you ^_^
@@BethRamsden Thank you so so much!!!! It worked, I just tried it out today and the skin looks flawless, let’s see how the make up aplication goes out. Thank you for the details, it was really useful!
I know you wrote this a year ago, but I have been looking EVERYWHERE for a tip for this problem! I have such a hard time with this skin tone! Thank you for the info@@BethRamsden
I press the clay to shape it, but I remove it from the Blythe head before baking it. I don’t put her head in the oven! 😄 If it’s a small piece, it’s possible to cure it with a heat gun instead of the oven (but still safely away from the head!!) 😁
i haven’t watched the whole video yet so forgive me if my question gets answered but, how do you use the eye chips while customizing? thank you i’m advance :)
Hi! Do you mean how to swap them out for new ones? I have shown it on my first custom video I think, but I will be showing it in detail again in my newest video coming out this Friday! ;)

@@catgrluvr2003 Ahh sorry! I have shown some fully painted ones before (In my first series of customising videos) but also a couple of ways to re-use existing eye chips in my Mermaid custom Blythe video, hope that helps for now, but it’ll definitely be something I show again in the future (I have a new silicon mould to try making resin eye chips from scratch!) ✨😊✨
@@BethRamsden i’ll be sure to check them out (just found ur channel and love ur vids btw)!! and i can’t wait till u drop ur eye tut :) p.s. where did u get the mold??
if someone could help me…i have a black blythe i just got and wanted to remove the blush as it was way too red so i sanded and now her cheeks are almost tan color. is there a better way?? how can i fix this?
Hi! I think I showed my method in the 'customised sad faceplate' video if it's not in this one, but I used a tiny bit of vaseline on a cotton ball to wipe and remove the sanding debris from the tan colour faces once they've been sanded. It's possible you'll need some even finer sandpaper if you can see little scratches on her cheeks now, but if you can get it super smooth, then clean away the dust (and gently wash the faceplate after), then you'll just need to re-seal the whole face, this will hopefully even out the finished texture all over - you can use matte Mr.Super Clear or equivalent, or a satin or gloss varnish if you prefer the shiny look. Hope that helps! ^_^

I know this is an old video, but I saw you used a special mask when you were applying the sealant. Is it toxic? Do you have any recommendations for nontoxic sealants so I don’t have to use a mask?
I don't know of any sealant spray that's advisable to use without some sort of protection, I would simply advise a good respirator mask, and a well ventilated area - or do it outside if the weather allows?

How did you match the face to the body so perfectly????
That was just luck really! Once the plastic was sanded down the colour looked quite different, a much better match! 😁
Would acetone take the shine off so that you dont have to sand? Or would that damage/blotch the skin color?
Acetone will potentially melt this kind of hard plastic, so you’d have to be very very careful with it. I believe it would remove the face paint
brilliant

Was the top lip reconstructed just by carving (taking away)? Or did you perhaps build up the top lip with apoxie clay? It looks much fuller under her nose. What a wonderful job on that mouth!!
Yes! It was all subtractive sculpting, nothing extra added ☺️ I’ve often wondered that myself about other peoples customs, carving can change the appearance so much!
@@BethRamsden thank you for the reply. Am in awe at your skill!
merci beaucoup, grazie mille, magnifico
Je suis heureux que vous l'ayez apprécié! Merci beaucoup d'avoir regardé ^_^
Wow you did amazing job!😍 would you tell me the brand of grinder??
Thank you! I have descriptions and links to most of the things I use regularly here in my FAQ: bethramsden.com/faq
As for reference, I suppose my experience as a portrait painter means it's kind of built in to me now, but if you create a kind of mood board, of other dolls that you like the look of, you can use them as your reference. I hope that helps! Please feel free to ask any more questions ^_^
Hi! I’m which doll on Blythe Homes page did you buy for the tan doll?
The exact same doll is no longer available, but this is the closest I found on Blythe Homes: www.aliexpress.com/item/32937184273.html?pdp_npi=4%40dis%21GBP%21£45.99%21£22.99%21%21%2158.50%2129.25%21%402103201917284844063265522e65bf%2112000028253546550%21sh%21UK%21180281116%21X&spm=a2g0o.store_pc_allItems_or_groupList.new_all_items_2007447139032.32937184273
Please can you talk about shoes for Blythe
@@BethRamsden Tysm. 😊
Waiting for my Blythe to come from AliExpress to experiment and customize her, what I have a problem is with most bodies, most bodies that are to my liking are resin and I don’t want to work with resin
Ooh exciting! I hope you have fun with it 😁 I don’t think I’ve seen a Blythe with a resin body yet, that would be interesting! 🤩
Hi Beth! Do you have a link or a search term you used to find the shop Blythe Homes on AliExpress? I tried searching the name on the website to find the shop, but it isn't coming up for me. Thank you!
Hi! Good question actually! I’m not sure how I found them the first time, but here’s a full description of one of their newly added items
‘DBS Dream Fairy Pocket Doll Blind Box animal toy anime doll kawaii model Figure collection’ Hopefully that’ll help you find them. I follow the shop in the AliExpress app, so it helps find them again 😁 No problem!
@@BethRamsden Awesome! Thank you so much Beth! I'll give them a follow as well so I can find them again ☺️
Heya! ? so what brand of airbrush do you use?
I’ve no idea what the brand is sorry, It’s a pretty basic airbrush and compressor though, nothing fancy! 😅
@@BethRamsden thanks for taking the time to answer I was amazed at the finished result I think it’s one of the most beautiful types of crafts you can do, I like to design and create there clothes. One day soon I will try to customize a factory doll like you do.
@@RevenantThe no problem! I love the customising and the sewing so much! I hope you enjoy it when you try it yourself! 😊
How do you get rid of the ash left from sanding?
I wash the plates in soapy water, with a magic eraser sponge. For the dark skin colours it's recommended to wipe away the dust with a little vaseline on a cotton ball, before washing. That really helps grab all the tiny particles - the face should be really well sanded first though, with very high grit sandpaper.
👍
Amazing 😍🤩
Thank you Rita! 😊
Can you link where you get those dolls from
Links are all in the FAQ page at bethramsden.com 👍
Does blythe homes have website? I am also looking for my first blythe doll
I don’t know about a website of their own, but shop inks are in the FAQ page at bethramsden.com 😊
@@rachel_dawn_amber Oh I’m so delighted! Good luck with the rest of her! 😊
I know you wrote this a year ago, but I have been looking EVERYWHERE for a tip for this problem! I have such a hard time with this skin tone! Thank you for the info@@BethRamsden
@@audreygatewood3625 I'm so glad to hear it helped!! ^_^
Isn't it a problem to add polymer clay to the Blythe doll and bake it? how do you do this?
I press the clay to shape it, but I remove it from the Blythe head before baking it. I don’t put her head in the oven! 😄
If it’s a small piece, it’s possible to cure it with a heat gun instead of the oven (but still safely away from the head!!) 😁
@@BethRamsden thank you :)
Como logro que quedara lisa la cara después de lijar?
Querrá usar papel de lija de grano muy fino (suave), verifique los números en la parte posterior para ver cuál es el número de grano. ^_^
i haven’t watched the whole video yet so forgive me if my question gets answered but, how do you use the eye chips while customizing? thank you i’m advance :)
Hi! Do you mean how to swap them out for new ones? I have shown it on my first custom video I think, but I will be showing it in detail again in my newest video coming out this Friday! ;)
@@BethRamsden i mean about the different methods of customizing!! there isn’t a lot of info abt that out there and i want to know what i’m doing before i do it lol but if you’re making a vid i can’t wait to tune in !!! :)

I’m an artist and I’m obsessed with these dolls they cost 400-10000 usd. So I figured why don’t I make them myself
Thanks for watching! Have you tried any doll customisation yet? It's very satisfying to do it yourself ^_^
if someone could help me…i have a black blythe i just got and wanted to remove the blush as it was way too red so i sanded and now her cheeks are almost tan color. is there a better way?? how can i fix this?
thank you so much for taking time out of your day to respond. i’m new so it really means a lot
Hello
Quelle est la granulosité du papier de verre svp ?
Hi! The sandpaper is use is between 400 and 1200 grit. The higher numbers are for finishing off the face 😊

Can’t you just remove the glaze with acetate?
Acetone is often used on vinyl doll heads like Barbie or MH, but Blythe heads are a different hard plastic - Acetone could melt it, so it is risky!

I just saw Blythe Homes price for a doll but the shipping fee is KILLING MEEEE 😭😭😭😭😭
Oh dear! I think their shipping is free to the uk, that’s such a shame!! ☹️
True however stilll much less expensive than real Blythe !!! 🎉❤
