IMO, they just came out at the wrong time. If they were around today, the comparison would be much more positive, since Ev hasn’t had a sound like this since, well the 2000s, and many people might appreciate the callback. Besides, Carly and Amy have very different voices, she was treated so unfairly.

There were only 2 persons that wrote most of the Evanescence songs from 1997 to 2003 and those 2 are Ben Moody and Amy Lee, no one else were involved (aside to David Hodged doing back up vocals and keyboard for 2 years prior to Fallen), the other guys (rocky and john) joined after Fallen was already done. Last minute thing John did in that record was doing programming for Taking Over Me in the last version of the song picked for the album. And Rocky Gray's band Living Sacrifice wrote Tourniquet (not him by himself) and that song ended up being a cover in the album STILL the second verse and last chorus were written by Amy Lee.
So if WATF sounded like Evanescence was because BEN MOODY make it happend that way, he has wrote tons of different music yet he on purpose decided to go with the similar sound Amy Lee and him used to have. They could've choosen any singer, yet they picked the one that is the most similar to Amy Lee, yet they changed her style to a more gothic rock look 100% similar to what Amy Lee has always worn.
Carly had a very colorful style way too different to the one she tried to use in the WATF days. The chords used in Fallen are basically the same used in most of the songs in Tear the World Down. (Even some tempo and chords are the same like Imaginary and Paradigm). So anyone that tries to say "this is not a copycat band" is in the wrong. Ben Moody was totally aiming to recreate what he had with Amy. But there's something missing in the sound (the reason people didn't like this band as much) and that is Amy Lee's writting style, her lyrics are better, her piano skills are better, and that's why she is still doing music with different musicians but it still sounds like EVANESCENCE bc literally she is and has always been the main writter and creator of Ev's sound.
Tear the World Down was basically Fallen 2.0 they could've brang a far better style with those good musicians, and the reason they didn't had success was bc of the lack of originality and creativity. Even they misused Carly's powerful vocals because she was forced to sing in a style that wasn't the right one for her voice. In American Idol she did amazing, but touring with WATF was horrible bc she couldn't sing the whole set singing in a key and notes that weren't common or the right ones for her natural voice and tone.

agreed with everything except i dont think ben was trying to recreate anything with watf he was basically missing his musical identity / rockstar persona so he attempted reviving & retrieving that part of himself , one last time same thing he done with the halo method.
