Magazine Launch: Journal

A conversation with Jim Dine, Hugo Pernet, Ghazal Mosadeq, Elke de Rijcke, Vincent Broqua, and Dan Clarke at the American Library in Paris. Filmed on 28/02/2024 with a live audience both in person and on Zoom.
Why does poetry matter? Although some may speak of the demise of poetry, what we're seeing instead is a revitalization, which testifies to its ongoing urgency as an art. More than ever, we are in need of dialogue, of initiating new discussion, and of activating the language that poetry creates. The magazine Journal participates in this situation by placing poets of different languages in conversation through the space of the page.
Edited by the poet and artist Jim Dine and poet and translator Vincent Broqua, Journal is a new poetry magazine that seeks to publish poets internationally. The Library is delighted to host the launch of the first issue, with contributions from sixteen authors who write (and translate) in different languages: from Brazilian Portuguese to Persan as well as French, English and Dutch. Celebrating a wide spectrum of voices who are political, lyrical, conceptual, visual, comic, and more, it represents the liveliness of poetry today with a renewed sense of its vitality.
Journal publishes international poetry in translation or not. It seeks to further and invent conversations. The cover is by Daniel Clarke.
This launch is organized in partnership with Double Change, the Franco-American poetry association.
About the Speakers:
Vincent Broqua is a writer, a translator and a full professor at Université de Paris 8. He writes in English and in French. He works across media for a politics of lightness. His latest books: La Langue du Garçon (Al Dante/Les presses du réel, 2023), Recovery (trans. Cole Swensen, Pamenar Press, 2022), Photocall, projet d’attendrissement (Petits matins, 2021), Malgré la ligne droite, l’écriture américaine de Josef Albers (Les presses du réel, 2021).
Jim Dine was born in 1935 in Cincinnati, Ohio. He began writing poetry in the 1960’s with readings at the St Mark’s church in New York City and Arts Lab in London, England. As a poet he has collaborated with Robert Creeley, Kenneth Koch and Ted Berrigan. He has also worked with the musicians ; Marc Marder, Daniele Rocato and Fabrizio Ottaviucci reading his poetry during their music. His latest book « A fragile spirit » is set to come out this winter with Steidl publishers.
Daniel Clarke born in 1971 American painter and printmaker. His most recent publication, Long Island was published by Steidl.
Elke de Rijcke est poète, traductrice de poésie (FR-NL) et micro-curatrice (The Living Library & Physical Poetics). Elle vient de publier Et puis, soudain, il carillonne (Selected 2005-2021) aux éds. LansKine (2023), une anthologie qui présente un vaste aperçu de ses 5 livres de poésie existants. Elle est par ailleurs professeure d’art et de littérature aux Ecoles Supérieures des Arts St-Luc et à l’erg Bruxelles.
Patricia Lavelle, née à Rio de Janeiro, est poète, professeure de théorie littéraire à la PUC-Rio et docteure en philosophie (EHESS). Publications récentes en poésie: Bye bye Babel (Al Dante / Les presses du réel, 2023), Sombras Longas (Relicário edições, 2023).
Ghazal Mosadeq is a poet, editor and translator. She is the founder of Pamenar Press, an independent publisher of poetry, translation, hybrid and critical writing. Her own work has been published by gammm Press, Prototype, Tamaas, Litmus Press, Firmament and Asymptote among others. She is a member of the editorial advisory board for the Journal of British and Irish Innovative Poetry.
Hugo Pernet Poète et plasticien. Il est né à Paris en 1983. Il vit actuellement à Dijon. Il a publié plusieurs livres aux éditions Fissile, Série Discrète, et Vanloo.
