- There may be no more accomplished, capable, and effective pure air-to-air fighter aircraft than the once McDonnell Douglas, now Boeing F-15 Eagle. With an impressive weapons suite, radar, and ID capability, eye watering handling characteristics, and an unbeaten combat record, no other bird rules the skies quite like the Eagle.
On this episode, retired U.S. Air Force Colonel Brian "Spiderman" Kamp, who accrued more than 4,000 flight hours in the F-15, joins former F-22 Raptor guest Terry "Stretch" Scott, who has over 3,000 flight hours in the Eagle, to discuss this impressive machine inside and out. Former episode 25 hero Mike "BS" Walsh assists as guest co-host to offer his perspective as a relative newcomer to the F-15 after flying more than 1,000 hours in Marine F/A-18s and also helps answer listener questions.

Never were more prophetic words spoken.
This was fun! It brought back a slew of wild and fun memories! I was a munitions dude at Kadena AB Japan in 1980 and the F-15C's and D's were just arriving. We only had 4 the day I arrived to the squadron. These fighters were the state of the art and designed with easy/rapid maintenance, compared to the F4E's they replaced. The load crew I was on won the Load Crew of the Quarter which meant we were going to get incentive rides!! Hell Yeah!! But, during the previous incentive rides too many folks ended up puking all over the rear cockpit. The powers that be decided to stop the incentive rides, DAMMIT!! So close but so far, right?!
To this day when I see an F-15 flyover I get immediate goosebumps and a wee bit teary-eyed! Those 18 months in pure bliss (like being on the Ferarri F-1 Racing TEam). Why I let myself get transferred to Fairchild AFB (much closer to home - Seattle WA) I'll never know. The camaraderie between the pilots and the maintenance folks was AWESOME! Which sadly, never happened in a B-52 squadron.

Well, what can I possibly say. This pair of podcasts is, well, simply perfect. I always have a healthy respect for the Eagle but after this, it's become my favourite US jet fighter of all time. The guest speakers (spiderman and stretch), clearly have chemistry, having known each other for 20 years, and it shows. For them to get "Jello" into that chemistry, is brilliant. I consider spidey to be Mr F15. This is one that can be listed as, like the aircraft itself, dominator of its field. Absolutely brilliant.
I suppose if you have over 4,000 hours in the jet you can call the gun anything you want even a M51A haha! Great interviews and can't wait for Part 2

Awesome video, fellas! From the perspective of an enthusiast, but somebody who isn't a pilot, these interviews give nice insight in to what it's like to be a fighter pilot. Helps me dream!

Being one of the lucky few to have flown all US varients of the air-to-air Eagle; the most fun for 1v1 pure BFM in order were:
F-15A MSIP (light nose, -220 motors, only at FL ANG, now gone), the race car of Eagles!
F-15A (light nose, -100 motors)
F-15C MSIP (med nose, -220)
F-15D (more drag, -220)
F-15B (more drag, -100)
F-15C AESA radar (hvy nose, -220), but AESA rocks for BVR!
My two cents.
Well worth the wait gentlemen! I graduated from high school in ‘86 in Panama City, I got to hang out at Tyndall a couple of times.... F-15s were a huge part of the backdrop of my teens. Love the story about the bent one out on the pole.

The Israelis used the F-15Bs and Ds as Strike aircraft and were also used as satellite communications relays. They have an R2D2-like pod right behind the cockpit. The Israelis used them to strike the PLO headquarters with GBU-10s.

Thank you so much for dedicating some episodes to the legendary F-15! What an amazing airplane! Not wanting to sound picky but listening to this does inspire me to consider a career in the Air National Guard and working towards a commission and pilot slot for the opportunity to fly F-15.
However, recently with what I've been reading online, it seems the Air Force higher ups don't want to continue this aircraft for much longer, and I fear I that if I were to achieve my goals it may be too late.
The F-15X is just arriving in Guard units and will likely be there awhile
@@FighterPilotPodcast That's good to hear, but I've seen news articles online saying that production has been cut and some units may not get the new variant and may go to the F-35 or might no longer be a flying squadron.

@@FighterPilotPodcast Sorry for sounding so down. This is something I do worry about. I want the F-15 to keep flying. Of course, you have connections and friendships with people in the squadrons still so you would know better than me any day.
13:00 Example that immediately came to mind was VADM David Venlet. In 1981, he was part of the aircrew as an F-14A RIO in VF-41 that shot down two Libyan Su-22s in the first Gulf of Sidra "Line of Death" incident. He transitioned to become an F-14 pilot afterwards, and was the Navys F-35 program manager.

One little thing though: as a german i gotta mention that henry ford did not come up with the car, a guy by the name of Karl Benz did decades earlier in 1885. What ford invented was the mass production, but you're certainly not the only americans thinking that ;)

@@kainhall I'm a bit spotty on the knowledge of exactly the things that nikolaus otto did, but he did invent the four-stroke combustion engine. The type of engine we use now which is similar to it is also named the "otto-engine" in his honor in germany. But I think you're better off googling about him than listening to me.
Very true, the model-t was absolutely instrumental in getting the car popular and cheap enough for everyone (most) people to own, while also making it a lot more user friendly. Looking at the Benz Patent-Motorwagen (there are a few videos on youtube here of a replica that mercedes owns) its a lot more complicated to operate, but it was the first production... well essentially horse-carriage that was capable of moving under its own power.
Engineering and Invention is always an iterative process thats done by multiple independent people. Benz is regarded as the inventor of the automobile though.

Now I understand why the F-15A/B were phased out by the F-15C/D. Sad that the F-15A/B didn’t stick around in the 2010s. Even though...the MSIP II (Multi-Stage Improvement Program), the MSIP upgrade for F-15C/D, was implemented on some F-15A/B airframes. The MSIP II F-15A/Bs have similar sets to the F-15C/D. I have a question that keeps me thinking: were the MSIP II F-15A/Bs still incapable of using the AMRAAM?
Edit: As it turns out, MSIP F-15As do have capabilities for AMRAAM. Another question was what were the features in the cancelled MSIP I upgrade for the F-15A/B?
I actually didn't know that fighters could pull more than 9gs for brief periods of time. I thought that most fighters have a built in limiter to keep pilots at or below 9gs.

To answer the qualifications question, in the Navy and Marines pilots can hold more then one current aircraft type rating and actively keep them current. Whereas in the Air Force only one type rating can be held at a single time. For instance I know an F15 pilot who is being assigned to the F16 and he has had to give up his F15 qual and go to F16 train him at Luke do the full training.
1:03:00, the airframe he is referring to was F-15A 74-0095, and was one of the gate guards at Tyndall. Unfortunately, this aircraft was severely damaged when it was flipped onto its back OCT 2018 during Hurricane Michael.

Maybe you can revisit this in the future. Say, get insights from a non-US Eagle operator, notably Singapore, South Korea, Saudi and Qatar with their own Strike Eagle sub-variants and Advanced Eagles, or maybe get Boeing test pilots to shill the Eagle X.
He says that when entering into the engagement with the Hornet that he was at 12,500 lbs of fuel, but the tanks were dry. Isn't that nearly full?
Perhaps he meant external tanks.

I think people sometimes listen to Elon Musk a little bit too much.
The thing I've noticed is that people pay too much attention to titles (MD, Phd, etc.) and dollar signs in people's portfolios. They're just assuming Mr. Title or Mr. Billionaire is always telling the truth, they're honorable, and that they know best.
I would take the word of people who've actually been in combat and had to work with existing hardware built for war over someone who is speculating from the side which is pretty much all Elon does.
There is a cult of personality around Elon Musk and way too many people take him at his word without ever questioning him. I think that's dangerous to do for anyone.
They've been saying much of the same crap Elon Musk did for 60 years in the Pentagon. There's nothing new in what he said.

You guys called the AMRAAM a semi Active radar guided missile... isn’t that wrong though ? The Sparrow Is a semi Active radar guided missile.
AIM-7 is a passive missile as it doesn’t carry its own tracking radar. Instead, it requires targeting data directly from the launch aircraft until it hits its target.

I have so much respect for these aviators, but I was flabbergasted when I heard the venerable Vulcan called an M51, and then when he referred to AMRAAM - active missile Fox3 as semi-active, which would be Fox1. Aim-7 sparrows are SARH weapons with a brevity code of Fox1.

I don't understand why vtol isn't being focused on more. For example take the design of a DJI mavic pro, scale it up to the size of a F-15, slap a cockpit in it, swap the props for jet engines, and put some hardpoints on the belly.. Done!
Because it will never be as fast as the same jet with out VTOL

What makes VTOL so important to you that you think it's worth sacrificing everything else that makes a fighter like an F-15 effective?
@@CallsignJoNayUniversal adaptability, I think if designed correctly it could do everything a ah64, a10, av8 and maybe f-15 could do and better. Mach 1+ might be a hurdle but then I'm reminded of the giant outboard engines on the sr71.. Maneuverability would could be an insane advantage, just watch some drone racing for example. Fuel consumption would be another hurdle, I would think it would need some wing lift to cruise at low burn. Idk I just see so many awesome capabilities in that platform.
