To this day I still feel Jane Fonda's best performance was in "They Shoot Horses Don't They".
Fonda gave a frenetic, meat and bones with sweat and all performance,
you can FEEL her energy and desperation jumping off the screen.
The popular opinion is Fonda's peak was in "Klute", but in Horses she gave an atypical "Un-Fonda like" performance.
She lost out to Maggie Smith, who gave the same British school-marmish performance we've seen in just about every film she's been in.
Fonda's anti-Vietnam stance cost her the Oscar in 1969 for Horses, but in 1971's Klute, Hollywood could no longer deny her and she finally won

I only saw They Shoot Horses, Don't They? a few years ago...and well, I was floored. Is there another movie where every actor is just so darn good??? Susannah York? Riveting...It is easily Jane Fonda's best work. Gig Young? A complete performance. It's also beautifully filmed. I was on the edge of my seat the whole time and I"m tearing up thinking about it now - it stands up today; watch it, you'll see.
For years I thought "was Rita Moreno that good in West Side Story?"...I mean, she was..but something bugged me about it...Until I watched it again and saw the candy store scene and was put in my place. A tough scene. Angelica Huston's "Papa" scene in Prizzi's Honor totally sealed her Oscar deal - like all great actors, it's in the eyes! Like Leachman's win for Picture Show, Huston could have had no lines and would have won.

@PaulWEvans I cannot fathom what it must have been like filming Horses...and I concur, the entire ensemble was outstanding. How did it not get nominated for Best Picture?? As for Moreno, she has stated that the scene you reference is the one that won her the Oscar. But as much as she is my favorite winner in the category, I believe the award was hers once voters watched the "America" number. @@oscarman42 They Shoot Horses... non nomination is one of the biggest Oscar faux pas. Apparently what happened was Universal pushed Anne of the Thousand Days into release right at the end of the year with a very aggressive ad campaign. Despite receiving only so-so reviews the movie's so-called 'pedigree' helped it secure the Best Picture spot along with nine (!) other nominations, the most that year. The fact that its director was not among them says a lot as well. The fact that hardly anyone remembers that stuffy historical Oscar bait and Horses is so revered today is at least a little comforting.

In addition to these scenes, I always thought Jo Van Fleet's scene with her son James Dean in her office at the brothel in East of Eden is one of the best. In just a few minutes she communicates her rage and resentment at her husband, Dean's father, enough so that she admits shooting him to get away from the "stinking ranch". And Rita Moreno uttering the line "Don't you TOUCH me...." in WSS.

@@oscarman42 I recall that video, and you were very effusive in your praise of Jo Van Fleet. Considering her film debut was East of Eden, at 40-ish, she really did a lot in her first years in films. I think if "I'll Cry Tomorrow" had been released in a different year, she'd at least gotten a nomination for that role. I think I'd have given her a nomination for Wild River as well - they seemed to age her up in most of her roles, and she played them beautifully. I often watch the videos out of sync with the polls, but I enjoy them and get to them as soon as I can --- you do a great service for Oscar nerds like me. As for Rita, I also concur that "America" was definitely another Oscar moment for her. On her IMDb page, there are notes as to how arduous shooting that number was, and it sure paid off. 🙂

He was known to be a taskmaster (Moreno said he was a "sadist" - but she also said if given the chance she would have worked with again in a heartbeat). The Last Picture Show is a treasure trove of great performances and memorable scenes. I also love Ellen Burstyn's performance (including her monologue - a feature of her performances which has become a signature over the decades) which makes me think it would also be worth exploring 'oscar worthy' scenes of non-winners in a future video. Some other good examples would be Kate Hudson's signature scene in Almost Famous (we all know which one) and Sir Ian McKellen's two options in Fellowship of the Ring (the quieter scene 'so do all who live to see such times' and of course the Balrog showdown). Ann Blyth in Mildred Pierce also comes to mind with her contempt-laden argument with Joan Crawford.

Rosemary’s Baby is one of my absolute favorite movies. I think it’s a shame that Mia Farrow wasn’t also nominated. She absolutely killed it! Side note: I’ve never seen an adapted screenplay as faithful to its source material as RB’s is. It’s been said that it may have been because it was both Polanski’s first Hollywood movie and his first adaptation, and that, as a Director, he didn’t yet realize that he could take artistic license. I don't think you can really compare Rosemary's Baby the novel to The Exorcist the novel, they're different stories from authors who had different goals and very different theological beliefs. William Peter Blatty, who wrote The Exorcist, was a devout Catholic and he intended his book to be primarily about a crisis of faith, not a horror story, and he based it loosely on actual events that he had researched. Ben Bradlee's (Jason Robards) tiny rap on a desk and fist pound in ATPM and Micheal Caine's little giggle in Hanna and Her Sisters (I have my answer, I;m walking on air) were two perfect moments that cinched the oscar for them.
Hattie McDaniel deserved her Oscar for every second she was on screen in GWTW

Shirley McLaine 1983 - "Give my daughter the shot!" scene.
P.S. : Shirley Mclaine in "Terms of endearment" is my favorite performance ever !!!!
Though the "Hospital/"Give the shot" scene it's the most famous scene of hers in the film and for sure the scene that cimented her Oscar, it's not MY FAVORITE. My favorite scene of hers in the film is when Nicholson puts an end to their relationship at the backyard of the house. We can see that woman fading away ... within a second that woman is DONE for good .
The curious thing is that THIS SCENE is not on the novel; Nicholson's character not even exists on the novel !!!

An Italian Volcano bursts into Oscar History in 1955 with Anna Magnani's immortal performance in "The Rose Tattoo" neurotically worshipping the memory of her dead husband and then recollecting this unfaithful man. With next to no make-up, full of fire from beginning to end, Anna pulled out all the stops as the Italian widow. Tempermental, often hysterical, we nonetheless get to know the pathos and soul of this Sicilian-born seamstress. With Magnani's talent and Tennessee's words, this was an unbeatable combination easily overcoming Susan Hayward for I'll Cry Tomorrow, Katherine Hepburn in Summertime, Jennifer Jones for Love is a Many Splendered Thing and Eleanor Parker for Interrupted Melody, all very great performances. Every single Magnani outburst could be considered an Oscar-worthy moment with the totality a golden performance of realism that will never be forgotten.

Magnani's entry into films via the neorealist movement propelled her to great visibility and acclaim when she got the part that Maureen Stapleton created so brilliantly on Broadway. That said, my vote would have gone to Susan Hayward for her raw portrayal of Lillian Roth in I'll Cry Tomorrow.

Of all the best actress Oscar wins since they began in the 1920's I rank Anna Magnani's best actress win for the Rose Tattoo in 1955 as the greatest win of all time just behind my greatest best actress pick of all time, Shirley Booth in Come Back, Little Sheba in 1952. Both of these small but great films were both directed by the same man. The now almost forgotten film and stage director Daniel Mann. Burt Lancaster was the co-star to both ladies in both of these films. I also ranked Vivien Leigh a very close third in her classic 1951 film, A Streetcar Named Desire. I rank any of these leading lady performances higher than any one of the films that starred actresses like Bette Davis, Katharine Hepburn and Meryl Streep.

For me Vanessa Redgrave as Julia in 1977's Julia is the greatest Best Supporting Actress win. In her final scene with Jane Fonda, when they meet in a cafe to exchange money to rescue Jews from the Nazis, Redgrave unselfconsciously gives a master class in the art of acting. Besides the use of voice in the dialogue, all the communication is in the body, the face and particularly in the eyes. In this highly wrought scene, there are no histrionics, no Oscar bait, just pure revelation of soul to soul. The emotional intensity is almost unbearable. Everytime I watch this scene I am grateful for the force of revelation Vanessa Redgrave is in this film and so many others.

1949 - Mercedes MacCambridge’s mirror scene in ALL THE KING’S MEN, when she looks into a mirror and asks John Ireland: “Did you ever have smallpox? It leaves the skin hard … not soft like hers” (meaning Joanne Dru). Patricia Clarkson was more than competent in playing Sadie Burke in the remake, but she lacked the venom and menace of McCambridge.
1956 - Dorothy Malone dancing with abandon as her father is dying on the staircase. I don’t know if you would consider the scene acting, but it is memorable.

I remember on Mom fans kept wondering when Octavia's character might return even for an epsiode but I think Octavia was too busy by then.

I never got past thinking he was once married to Elizabeth Montgomery from Betwitched . It's also some sad trivia that he and George Saunders died the same way at the same age and both won supporting actor.

This video is an excellent way to start 2025. It terrifically spotlighted the big scenes of smaller roles which often end up being the most memorable part of their movies.
My favorite performance in that video is Javier Bardem in No Country For Old Men. While he’s perfectly chilling in it from start to finish, the scene of him which you highlighted definitely stands out - Subtle, quiet, and even more chilling.
Another performance with an extra special scene is Whoopi Goldberg in Ghost. I can never forget the “You in danger, girl” scene. It’s so well-balanced - Funny-but-too-funny, emotional-but-not-too-emotional, sassy-but-not-too-sassy. Every time I watch this scene, I’m reminded Whoopi and only Whoopi could have pulled off that performance.
This example made me realize, every once in awhile, a memorable scene can be drilled down even further to a memorable line. With pitch perfect delivery, a line, which otherwise looks pretty ordinary on the page, can become magic - Oscar-winning magic!
Dianne Weist in Bullets Over Broadway for the “Don’t Speak” scenes (yes, she’s wonderfully over-the-top throughout that movie, but I especially enjoy her saying this specific line)
Tommy Lee Jones in the Fugitive for the “I Don’t Care” scene (I’m actually not a huge fan of his win, but I do applaud him for that scene)
Cuba Gooding Jr. in Jerry Maguire for the “Show Me The Money” scene
Robin Williams in Good Will Hunting for the “It’s Not Your Fault” scene
Alan Arkin in Little Miss Sunshine for the “Real Loser” scene
Louis Gossett Jr. in An Officer And A Gentleman for the “One Joker” scene

THEY SHOOT HORSES, DON'T THEY is a superb film. Jane Fonda and Susannah York got nominations and Red Buttons should have. Also excellent are Allyn Ann McLerie and Bonnie Bedelia. Yowzah Yowzah Yowzah!

@Ebelg-v7h Yes, Buttons was better in that film than his winning performance in Sayonara. An all-around great cast in a classic film.

I thought the Whoopi Goldberg bank scene is one of the best comedic performances ever ehcoh makes her less of an apology for color purple and more of a deserved win... I also rhink Marisa tomeis scen with the tires got it .. idk why comedy gets the short stick and off topic im worried the same with horror that Demi wont get nominated for the substance which to me os the performance of the year

Whoopi had some memorable scenes, which I think explains her win. Tomei's last scene in the film is probably what did it for her. I haven't seen The Substance but have read very mixed comments about it.

@bingovegas4867 Moreno says she is Puerto Rican. So she is wrong about her heritage? Maybe you can let her know.
