Dan has been a great addition to Giant Bomb. I think I'll buy his book about anxiety.

I was in bed when i had my first panic attack and all of a sudden it came over me too. I felt like i was going to die from a heart attack or something and i could not chill out. Ever since that day unfortunately I've let it get the best of me and now I'm very self conscious and overly obsessed

I clicked on this video randomly about 3 years ago and was unexpectedly startled to hear how similar Dan's account of having a panic attack was to a lot of what I experienced in the prior year (which was my first year at University). Ultimately I ended up buying the book and being even more startled for the same reasons. I then ended up talking about it with friends, coming out about it to my parents and seeing a GP who confirmed that I have - among other things - Generalised Anxiety Disorder. Had this video not been clipped out of the podcast and shared on UA-cam, I probably wouldn't have found out as soon as I did.
Thanks so much for sharing, because it changed my life :)

      How was the book?
Does it give tools to help us?
Or it's just describing symptoms, general things etc?

@@Arrasel It's not a book with tools as such. Much more biographical than that.
He recounts his first panic attacks in his late teenage years all the way through to joining Giant Bomb, doing his first PAX panel etc. And basically tells the story of how he did all this not in spite of his anxiety, but by using it as an ally.
Essentially Dan views tackling his anxiety as a guiding force towards major developmental growth. At the end of the book he does sum up his main takeaways and key bits of advice, but it's a lot more poignant in the context of his story.
I've read many really impactful books that are bestsellers. Dan's book is obviously a lot more modest than those, but honestly hit home for me way harder than any of them as a huge Giant Bomb fan. It's one of the most relatable things I've ever read. Really easy to read too, I'm usually terrible with paying attention while reading a book but I breezed through this one.
So if you're a GB fan and you think you can relate, this book isn't a guide, but it's a really reassuring read if you ever need one.
I might genuinely read it again now you've reminded me! I'm in a very different place to when I first read it and am proud to say I'm beginning to relate to a lot more of Dan's stories near the end of the book than then ones at the start. Thank you for reminding me!

@Jordbord7 thank you taking the time to reply!
I was looking for a book that can give us some techniques to help us beat anxiety, not just describing someone's experience.
I've read Outsmart Your Anxious Brain by David Carbonell and it was pretty good.
      Be blessed!

Dan Rykert is a man's man, for sure. It takes brass balls to talk about bone crushing fear and how he moved through it. Respect.

Dan Ryckert has quickly become one of my heroes. I just read the book he wrote about anxiety and I found it (and his general life philosophy and weird opinions) inspiring.

It's such a strange dichotomy. His subconscious is making him anxious to try and protect him, and he has to try and fight against it as he knows its safe.

I have gained so much respect for Dan because of this. This interview shows a whole different side of him, besides the 'heel' character he plays up in Giant Bomb. Respect.

I've had anxiety disorder (Generalized Anxiety Disorder-GAD) all my life. First panic attack was at nine. It's definitely shaped me as a person but I'm an extremely hard worker and go getter. I can really empathize with Dan and I think his insights are on point. Anxiety can cause you to want to get things done instead of procrastinating because by doing so you will become more anxious. Anxiety has made me appreciate just feeling good and normal naturally-after a run, hike, hang out with friends etc and helped me avoid drug use. I like to drink, but I know that hangovers are going to be a bitch and cause my anxiety to spike. I've never done drugs or drink heavily to self medicate. Both Dans are right on about talking: don't internalize your problems because your brain makes them much worse than they actually are.

+Cullen Lea Drug use is plenty natural. What you mean is: society buzzwords natural. The ones that help advertise whatever drugs they deem acceptable to them.

hornylink He's a professional writer, and is actually very intelligent. He's just a massive fucking goofball who has ridiculous lapses in common sense and maturity. I like to describe him as the world's smartest ten year old in a thirty year old's body.

silentman0 seeing as his life's motto is to learn as little as possible, and do the bare minimum of work I'll stick with my description.

wow i have aniexty to dan, to a point where it is making living not worth it anymore. But i like your point of if it is scaring you do it then your aniexty doesnt hold you down. I see it as a bubble that grows the more you feed into it but shrinks when you take more control. Its a shame that its always there though

Daniel Fordham It's sort of like learning to draw well. Sometimes it feels like it's impossible to get to that level, but a little perseverance and perhaps a daily routine will help. It will get better by leaps and bounds, trust me.

No wonder Dan's always looking to do extreme things at GB. I wonder if his stints about getting Platinums in games is a side effect of his personal remedy to anxiety.
