    I love Jeff's weird, tangential connection to the Dreamcast's introduction and demise.

    Wonder if anyone is in possession of or found a copy of that conference call? It would be a really fascinating thing to listen to.

      I remember actually listening to it on a realplayer or something as it happened. It's possible since it was available to the public to listen.

    The Dreamcast was the first system I bought on day one, the system that taught me how to pirate games, and the first console I ever imported something for (Fire Pro Wrestling D). I basically grew up in the 2 years that system was going.

      There should be more people like you. An unnecessary but appreciated kind effort.

    Dreamcast will forever be my favourite console for fighting games. Shame Tekken never made it to it...

    Hearing how Dan's Mom bought him a new video game console on little more than a whim has destroyed what little faith I had left in humanity.

      As someone that saved their pennies for 2 years to buy their dreamcast, I agree.

      +McBlemmen The Dreamcast at launch was $199, which was a large sum of money when I was a kid (though I can't speak for everyone obviously).

      I know I'm replying to a year old comment and all, but that bit was about the launch date of the Dreamcast (9/9/99). The Dreamcast was 199 bones at launch, which is around 300 bucks in today's money, so definitely a big deal

      They were referring to the launch date, which was 9/9/99.

      @@Spitznock Dreamcast was $199 true, but the original Playstation cost $299 at launch and the Saturn cost $399 at launch, and those were both 5 years earlier. And considering how powerful the Dreamcast was when it came out, $199 seemed like a steal. I was in 10th grade when it came out but I had that much money stowed away and bought one on launch day, whereas I had waited 2 years for a Christmas to get a Playstation at a lower price, and after that I saved my money for months and bought a Saturn when it came bundled with Virtua fighter 2, Virtua Cop 2, and Daytona.

    Until the Switch the Dreamcast was the fastest selling console of all time
    So Sega moved hardware like kings but the software after the first year the sales just dried up. Due to piracy and other factors.
    And then PS2 offered better graphics and a DVD player so after the PS2 launched the high console sales of the Dreamcast disappeared and the writing was on the wall at that point

    • @JazGalaxy
      @JazGalaxy 3 роки тому +3

      I don't think that he PS2 really offered better graphics. Especially not at launch. Soul Caliber, for example, looks EASILY better than Tekken Tag Tournament, which is basically a ps1 game running at 60 fps.
      I think that the real nail in the coffin that Sega never could surmount was the anticipation of Final Fantasy on PS2 and Metal Gear on PS2. People had an image of gaming, then, that was of tough guy adults in adult scenarios and Sega was not going to be able to cut it with their VERY Japanese lineup. Cartoony games like Grandia and Skies Of Arcadia weren't going to scratch the itch of man-children who wanted their games to make them feel tough.
      That and Sony's blatant lying about the power of the PS2. Sega could never overcome that.
