Skyline Drive entrance used to b just outside of town on the way to Royal Gorge. As a kid it was very scary drive back in the ‘70’s when our family vacationed there. It came down on the backside of the prison in the video. Jump in time....I took the family there on vacation in 2012? and gave them a drive of a scare as a Dad should do 40yrs later. Buckskin Joe’s was still open at that time also.....and of coarse “The Gorge” was always a great day....incline railway was my favorite down to the Arkansas River. Thanks for the wonderful memories.
I grew up in a small town in Missouri right on Highway 50 (ran right through the middle). There’s a bypass now, but when I hear Highway 50, I always think of home. ❤️
After watching your channel the past few years it’s cool to have you exploring our part of Southern Colorado. Next time through I’d be happy to show you Pueblo’s city center and the Historic Arkansas Riverwalk and then you can’t miss the Royal Gorge it’s impressive! .
Rt 50 is an awesome road all the way to Grand Junction. We stayed at the Mountain View RV Resort jusy west of Canon City for a few days. A friend of mine works at that Ace Hardware on the left at 3:42. Had a blast that trip!
My great grandparents lived in Penrose. They lived across the street from the apple orchard there. Stop and pick a fresh one. May be some Rocky Ford cantaloupes left?
You should have stopped at the Royal Gorge. Bridge is 1000'+ above the river. I was hoping you would take the time. (You would have liked it a lot)! One of Colorado's must see.
Hi Russ! What a beautiful drive! This is going on my places to visit! I really like how you were able to pass under the railroad track as the train went by, that turned out cool! I so look forward to seeing more of Colorado! Safe travels.
Wow, at the 3.40 mark on the right side you drove past a K Bobs Steak house. There was one in Alamogordo NM I used to go to with the family when the kids were little and I was married. Have not seen once since I left there back in 1988.
Russ you come up with some amazing footage and this is top of the line. I sure hope your A/C works real well in your RV back home because your going to need it. Thank you so much and thought I was at the I Max watching this on wide screen.
Going across the Royal Gorge bridge 27 years ago when I was 16 is when I learned I was afraid of heights! It’s super high up. Never again will I cross it.
Lowell it’s called chem - spraying = geoengineering. Been going on all over the country & world. Trying to block the sun and reduce temps, chemicals used to seed clouds are dangerous poison, linked to many health issues including Alzheimer’s. Look it up, I found it very unsettling watching the vlog starting with thin white lines in the sky and then later these bigger wide long rectangular clouuds
After you got gas, notice the really big streams in the sky. I think that is cloud seeding to help create moisture. They do this all the time in ski areas, like Silverthorne, CO. Those just seem too big for normal jet streams to me.
found another one of your older videos popped up. had to see this one! my one of my best friends got a small ranch on the opposing side of the mountains you flew the drone @,, try that rafting trip some day you'll love it ..happy travels Russ great vids.....
Do the Royal Gorge sometime. It is 1000 feet from the bridge to the river below. The scenery is awesome. There is a train you can ride along the river. Awesome experience!
Just love your videos! We were hoping you would make it to OK this trip. We would love to buy you dinner/lunch or even breakfast. You are even welcome to mooch dock. We have electric hookup outside at our house. Keep up the videos! They are cool! Small town USA!!
I was in Canon City in 1971 for a band parade during what I believe was a town festival when there was prison break from the state prison there. Saw two escaped inmates shot dead...
When you entered Canyon after Royal Gorge there are ruins of tiny block or stations where railroad wars defenders were up to the right. It's now hard for me to spot.
When I look at that I wonder how in the world did those pioneers cross those mountains? They must have been some tough old birds. I can not imagine. Men, women and children. Not all of them made it but how any did is a wonder.
So funny . The is the Arkansas River. On the deck of the Royal Gorge Bridge you see the bottom of the canyon with the river down below, Train tracks along side. There is a venicular that takes you to a deck on the bottom. the bridge has a turnaround, no destination. The deck is just rail ties. Other drives are Skyline drive, a dirt road near Royal Gorge that takes you back to Canon City. Built by prison labor. Another drive is Phantom Canyon that goes from Florence to Victor-Cripple Creek. Dirt road. You can get idea from other Videos. Look at Gold Camp and Stage coach roads from Cripple Creek to Colorado Springs -Broadmoor.
Absolutely gorgeous drive! Too bad no one gave you a head's up/you didn't know about the Royal Gorge. I think you'll regret not going there when you were right there.
It's too bad Buckskin Joe is gone. They used to film westerns there. Movies like Cat Baloo and True Grit were filmed there. Someone bought the old ghost town and moved it to his ranch. My mother is from Canon City. My grandfather worked as a guard at the old prison there in town, my grandmother was a homemaker, and I also had an aunt and uncle and cousins who lived there. Sadly, aside from my mom who lives here in Washington State, the others are all gone. But I do have two other uncles in Denver. One interesting fact about the prison in Canon City. It housed one Alferd Packer, the infamous cannibal who was set to hang there until the state governor let him loose. It also was the site of an attempted prison break by a bunch of inmates in the late 1940s that became the subject of a film.
Howdy Russ, this weekend I drove down the Oregon coast from Florence to Coos Bay then inland to Myrtle Point for a motorcycle gathering. Since my motorcycle was down I drove my little sports car. Just as much fun. The weather was beautiful. The host made homemade biscuits and gravy. Yum. They are having a big RV sale at the Casino in Coos Bay. Maybe I should check them out. Buy a toy hauler to put my car in.
I went to school in Westcliff and lived in Fremont county. And would go to Canon City to go shopping. I was born in Pueblo Colorado. It's nice to hear that others know where westcliffe is 😀👍. I hope you have a wonderful Easter
@@melbytvenge I didn't really think that still knew anyone still up that way. It's so long since I've lived there. I grew up going to school in Custer county Westcliff. That when moved at 17 it seems like a lifetime. I went from first to 10th grade all in the same school. My kids and my grandson think that I'm crazy or that I'm a Heck from The hills. I'd like to know about anyone who still lives up there. Because when I tell my grandson stoys of my childhood. I'd like someone else to believe me
Great video, my wife grew up near Canon City and we used to visit often. Do go back to see the Royal Gorge sometime, it is spectacular. Also, a note to GH, I believe you are thinking of the federal "super max " prison in Florence, CO., just a few miles from Canon City. The uni bomber is there and now, most likely, is Joaquin Guzman, better known as " el Chapo ". The Canon City prison is a state facility dating all the way back to before Colorado became a state.
The road to town was to the side of the rr tracks and also to the south. Didn,t have to cross the RG bridge. I live a few miles upstream from the Gorge.
Wish you could've continued west to the Montrose area and then south on 550 and the million Dollar Highway. We have a place up there and love that area! Safe travels Russ!
Hate to be a picky person, but thought you should know it is pronounced Can-yon City. It has the Mexican pronunciation. Beautiful country through the Royal Gorge. Driven it many, many times. Sometime when you are in this neighborhood, take the road from just east of Canyon City up to Cripple Creek and environs
@G H Sorry, but you are dead wrong. Canon in the Southwestern US is primarily a word with a "tilde" over it which makes a "y" sound to the word "canon". Have lived in NM and Colorado all my life, and know a bit of the mexican language.
@@BongoFM Is that the origin? I just know it's north by northwest of Salida up by Leadville somewhere. I did a whitewater trip down it from Salida once to just above the Royal Gorge.

Cute drive through the Main St, and on to the beautiful mountains, with excellent drone footage. You can't beat that. 😊👍
The RV park in Howard CO is a great place to stay at. Also, the restaurant up front has great food and service.
Russ that was a real nice pull out nice views and I could almost hear John Denver singing.😀

50 years ago, my jr. high school took us on a field trip to the Canon city prison. That was an eye opener! Haven,t been in a prison since!!!!!!
That train shot was worth the price of admission.
I used to drive through that area a lot. And the day area Spike Buck was one of my main toilet stops. And to stretch my legs.
