Great fast tour! I spend my winters here and up in Leadville. Its hard to believe it gets 85-80 degrees here in Salida. Then I head up toLeadville which is the coolest place in the country. Must try restaurants are 50 Burgers and the Pancake House in Salida and the Saloon in Leadville. So many events going on in this area. I love it here!
go downtown and try moonlight and others too! sad to say patio pancake might be going out of business:( lived her my whole life i never get tired of how beautiful it is
I just took that drive last week where I went Canon City to Ouray,..I stopped in Salida and went to the historic downtown area,..what a treat. Such a beautiful little town. I felt the same way you did about that drive along 50 West,..so beautiful and tranquil.
Several weeks ago, I did a circle tour of Colorado from NJ where I visited many National Parks and did a photo excursion on the Combres & Toltec in Southern Colorado & Northern New Mexico. On the way back I went up to Salida and took Rt 50 eastbound to Pueblo where I picked up I-25 to Denver and then made a sweep to North Platte, NE to photograph the restored Big Boy steam locomotive before returning home. US 50 is quite beautiful. The official Royal Gorge area is really a tourist trap now, and you get better scenery just along to highway at the day use sites. A lot of these areas are very familiar.
My wife and I have spent the last 2 summers in Salida. We have driven this route many times and always enjoy the scenery. Different times of day illuminate the canyon in various ways highlighting different rock face features. We maintain that unless you have driven a road in both directions you really haven't driven the road. Thank you for sharing you drives.
Took the same route in 2005. Flour gold was all I panned, fun still. Pretty sure the railroad is out of use.Awesome part of America. Looks exactly the same. Thanks.
This is a gorgeous drive, done it several times in the past 7 or 8 years. Takes me all day though since I often pull off to make a few casts on the Ark. Thanks for refreshing my memory bank. Check out the Boathouse Cantina on the river in downtown Salida for a relaxing meal overlooking the water. Now, how many people out there remember what a "Kodak moment" was?
I live in Salida, I call it Paradise. This particular drive between Canon City and Salida is terrifying all winter. There are parts of the road that only see a few hours of sun so the ice never melts!
Lovely video -- made me homesick. But oh, man, you completely missed Salida! What you saw is the unremarkable highway commercial strip. Had you turned right at that Highway 291 sign coming in (or F Street if coming from the other direction), that would have taken you to the heart of town on the river. That part truly is remarkable.
Check out a small town called Leadville! It used to be a major boom town and there's an old train you can take a short ride on. The guide will tell you about the mines and a lady called Baby Doe. Super historic and interesting - plus it's a beyond beautiful area.
Finally, finally, a great video that’s not ruined by music. Love it, I subscribed. I’ve done parts of Route 50 by motorcycle a few times.. West Virginia, Maryland is motorcycle heaven.. The best part according to people would have done the whole thing is the part through West Virginia…
My husband and I traveled route 50 from coast to coast,Ocean City, Maryland to Sacramento, California on a motorcycle. Great road such scenery!! Happy traveling!!
50 goes straight over Monarck Pass To Gunnison Co..Most beautiful drive in the mts . I'm from Iowa, and I drove that every year from 1985 to 2000. We camped south of Lake City. Beautiful video
My TV's on in the background. Two minutes before you said "Goodness Gravy", a woman on a PBS pledge drive break during the 50th anniversary docu on Woodstock got all flustered and confused-----and called the Hog Farm guy Wavy Gravy........Wishy Washy. LOLOLOLOLOL!!!!
I'm very blessed to live in the "Valley", about 50 miles from Salida off rt 285. Its beautiful, but we also travel that 50 mi. to Wal-Mart and work! It's worth it, though! Have a great trip!
North and West of where you turned on to 285 are the 14,000' peaks in the Rockies. Lots of gold panning in the Arkansas river. I don't think those railroad tracks get much use now. Happy trails.
You must go back someday. Fortunate to live in Kansas, been to Colorado at least 25 + times. Still my favorite places & I have been to many states & both coasts
i have all the places you have been to marked in my road atlas so i can plan my next trip west.rt 50 is on my list .i enjoyed the rockies.its been a good ride since you left quartzsite
Loving your videos - that I just found! Enjoy your non-dramatic commentary and no music - just scenic views. I have subscribed and will definitely keep watching for your travels.
You missed the entire historic downtown Salida by staying on Hwy 50 ... next time take that first right onto Hwy 291. The Big Horn Canyon you came through before you got to Salida is a geologic wonder and glad you enjoyed it ... I drive that road a lot to Pueblo. I have lived in Salida 47 years.
Now just imagine how much more exciting this road would be seen from the seat of your motorcycle @!! We will see it first hand on our Ducati in August!!😎😎🏍🍺🍺🍺
hay Russ ....Kos here...... i'm with all the way around the loop...........lol......looking for the next video ...........are we there yet.......lol.......HAPPY TRAILS see ya soon in Arizona...........THE KOS...........
Aww man, I was hoping to see the home i grew up in. You were about 1 1/2miles from it at 12:50. The first house after that is a tan A-frame. But you cut about 2 miles, and Swiss are out of by the video. And Canon City to Salida is a 64 mile trip!!!
I have been living in Salvador for the last 6 years. Came from Sierra Vista. Arizona winners are too long here. Going back to Sierra Vista area. Probably come back here for the summers
In '77 when my late-wife & i did US 50, it was somewhere around here that we picked up US285, to get to Denver. At least, as I remember it.-----------------WolfSky9, 74 y/o
We live in Paonia, Colorado! This valley raises fruit like Napa, California. We're surrounded by National Forrests! The Northfork of the Gunnison River runs through our valley! And we're on the Western Slope. NOT DENVER!
You should drive Thompson Canyon in Northern Colorado. You could get good drone shots. Research about the flash flood that killed many in the late 70's. Beautiful drive and scenery.
5:44, I believe that is a dry stream bed as it goes under a bridge for the train and ends abruptly at the river. As always I reserve the right to be wrong. Go home, get the big motorhome, and go back to Colorado. Im liking the videos. James, Wanderlust Estates works in every big town he stops at, delivering Door Dash, unlike those who . . . should. James is a hard working guy.
🙋 Hello Russ! I've really enjoyed this beautiful ride! I was just beginning to wonder if anyone lived there, then came life. According to statistics, there is only a population of 5,236 in Salida.
@@render4426 Hello ! I inquired on the address bar : Salida, Colarado as of 2016 census there was only 5,581 populaton in 2.64 sq. miles. per Wikipedia.
Not to worry, you are pronouncing Salida correctly. If you ever get back up that way again, stay on hwy. 50 to Cotapaxi, CO., it's a great drive and a cool town. Please keep the Colorado videos coming and thanks.
I like your videos of driving on the road and nice calm voice with explanation of the drive road trip. I subscribed too, Thank you for sharing these nice videos.
That rail line goes to grand junction its not used much anymore it was sold by the union pacific to a smaller line it was used a lot by the southern pacific as a way to get cars south to texas
Magnificent mountains! So wonderful to ride along and see it firsthand. I must go out to Hwy 50! Russ, what is appalling to you about fast food places? Have you ever eaten at McDonald’s or Wendy’s? Just curious!!😘🐾😘
Funny, Russ's yuck was my homemade version of a Wendy's chicken sandwich. I'm so happy cuz I've craved a chicken sammy for 2 days. My brother considers Wendys a mandatory stop sometime during every road trip.
Trains haven't used that track in years. And you only have to watch for the corners that never get sun when it does snow here. And the people that don't know how to drive that canyon. There's been so many wrecks in that canyon just from out of starters or idiots who race thru there.
Too bad you didn't continue west over Monarch Pass to Gunnison and Montrose, before you turned south. You could have seen the Gunnison River and the Black Canyon. You didn't even see half of what there was to see. What you got was nice though. :)
Hi Russ! Just came across your channel, and have been watching your travel videos from here in Canada. Absolutely beautiful country to travel through. Always loved the US deserts and parks. I'm just wondering if you were using a GoPro or Osmo Action camera on your dash? And your drone footage was very clear and sharp also! I only recently have purchased the DJI Mavic Air drone, but honestly haven't been able to make good use of it here in Ontario, Canada, especially in the winter months. I would have it out every day if I was travelling through the mid US for sure! Very entertaining and well recorded video that make viewing your channel very entertaining. Just like being there! Thanks Russ!
Having lived in Salida and trampled around those mountains for many a year, I can honestly say I never got tired of the beauty.
Should have gone into downtown Salida. A great little town with the river running right through it. Vibrant area.
Thanks so much for all the work you do to make these videos! I enjoy your demeanor very much. Rock on !

I’ve recently relocated to Colorado from NJ and I have yet to drive up to Salida. Thanks for the motivation Russ. I live in Loma. 👋🏾 nice to meet you
Beautiful mountains, and small towns, drone footage excellent, as always. Lots of work to produce this Summer Series. Been a great ride. TY. 😊👍

A must go to in Pagosa springs is the hot springs. It's a nice place for a soak right in town on the San Juan river. Safe travels.
Great video. Last time we drove highway 50 was 2008. Enjoy Pagosa Springs. Enjoy the hot springs.

I was raised in Salida, and even though you see tracks, trains have not operated since the early 80s when Climax(Leadville) shut down.
Good to see you in our home town Russ, it is beautiful!
Beautiful, beautiful footage!

I used to drive that road quite a lot. Coming through Canon City and heading east really is a nice drive.
Thankfully our CDOT IS really great at plowing. Those gates coming out of Canon City are used to atop traffic due to fires or inclement weather.
The views that you share with us are just so great, Thank you! We appreciate it... ⛰🏕🏞🏜
you should make a very short side trip to the town of Creed Colorado. its a beautiful mountain town....very very beautiful town......

We just made reservations at the Mountain Motel in Salida (vintage) and saw it captured on your way into town on the left. Fun!
Beautiful canyon and area. Wow.
One of the best video's ever. Just shared it on FB. ❤ Looking forward to the next one. Safe travels 😄
Like how you swung the drone over to the right immediately after launch..@5:40..where's all your commenters Russ..must be Saturday night..lol

Yep Monarch Ski Area is on up hwy 50 on Monarch Pass. They have a big kayaking race in Cotapaxi every year called FIBArk.
Love rides that go along a white water river! Thanks

Or was it 287 ?? Hell, I can't remember now.-------------------WolfSky9
I live in Salida, most mountains per capita in Coloardo. Great view 360 Degrees.
We'll have to "crowd fund" a handheld GPs for you. I never leave home without it, along with barometric pressure and a compass!
Good to know we won't run out of rocks in our lifetime.

I think the railroad track is an abandoned track I seen plants growing in the middle of the track on your drone shots
I agree.

watch out for rocks with the snow melt , lot of marks on the road where they hit .
Beautiful.
When you first came in to town you should have turned right, and go over to the Historic District. That's where all the really cool part of Salida is
Wonderful landscape!

I DO LOVE YOUR PRESENTATION,JUST LILIKE RIDING WITH YOU.
Enjoying the journey Russ👍
@12:41 is that an RV being pulled by a semi ? Never seen that before !
yep
I know it's spelled the same as the state of Arkansas but it's the R-Kansas river.
Through the canyon!

Love those drone shots! What are you using?
Nice that you liked my comment. What are you using to capture those beautiful drone shots? Which drone? What camera? Thanks!
You should have gone downtown along the river......shame you missed it!!
This is very pretty but I really expected to see alot more trees
I drove to Texas Creek and turned left toward Westcliffe August 14th. What kind of camera set up do you use?
