- Men wearing protective gear were spotted demolishing two cabin structures at a secret unnamed site next to the Lidl supermarket on the Lower High Street in Watford.
It appears that the work was not completed and left Large Fuel Pipelines close to a residential block and supermarket are definitely a concern. It is in direct site just a few yards away, an explosion would take out all of the windows.
The site was formerly used as a gas storage facility, but its location does not appear on any online maps. The demolition was captured on video by a drone. It was owned by National Grid.
Redevelopment of the former #gas works site at Lower High Street, Watford comprises the construction of 92 private apartments within a 6-storey residential block in Frogmore Ave.
The Watford Gas and Coke Company was formed by Deed of Partnership in 1834. The works were located in the High St. adjoining the River Colne. The company refused to extend its supply into Bushey and preparations were made to form the New Bushey and Watford GC. This forced the company to obtain an AoP in 1871 which extended its area to include Bushey.
We are waiting for a response from Hertfordshire County and #watford Borough Council.

It isn't that hard to find out about that patch of land, given that it was part of the old gas works.
"...part of the site is still used to distribute natural gas across Watford..."
You will notice two pipes across the River Colne to it, and also another pipe from the site down by the bridge on Lower High Street
Also, given the noise on the video, I would guess that this area is also being used as a water pump station of some sort, given that you had the old Pump House nearby.
Or it could now be part of the flood management system, given that the River Colne has flooded before and is a flood risk, so it is probably pumping excess water away.
"The site is located adjacent to the River Colne, its associated flood defences and is within a high risk flood zone..."
Yes the pipes for cross the river and then into the ground. We now have photos of this.
We found out a lot from the contractors who demolished other GasHolders in Hertfordshire, all info has been put in our webpage article.
