    Hi Leon, and Happy New Year!
    I just came across this video and had fun watching it, good one!
    Just for FYI, the ADA Depot did not come up with the 3TM for the MP-1. That was actually done by Todd Langner when he was the head of the service department at ADA, just to show what was possible with the MP-1 if it were juiced up. Jurrie picked up on the circuit when he bought out all the ADA surplus and tech info after ADA went out of business in the 90's.
    (Yes, I'm a member of the ADA Depot, and own all of the preamps along with a lot of other ADA gear as well, including the 3TM MP-1).
    Phillipe is the man who does a lot of mods and helps other members and owners of ADA gear get their rigs up and running right! He's an awesome guy!
    It sounds like it's time to re-cap your original MP-1 if it's making a lot of noise. a common issue with these. Replacing the cheap caps with good ones does go a long way for improving the tone and cutting the noise.
    The Depot is still up and running, so there are always people who are happy to help with any questions.
    Cheers!

      That's excellent information to have, I've pinned this.
      I'd love to see a "History of the A/DA MP-1" with some more info on Todd as his designs have been super influential.
      I'll have to get onto the re-cap for the other MP-1 - it's sounding a bit sad in comparison!

      @@LeonTodd There's not really much more to say about the MP-1 that isn't already common knowledge. When ADA introduced it at the 1987 NAMM show, there was nothing else like it on the market. They were the first to incorporate MIDI controlled switching into a single spaced rack unit, giving you the ability to store different amp tones, and recall them as needed with the press of a button. Stored in permanent memory, were about 30 different presets from the factory to give you an idea how to edit and create tones of your own. At the same time, ADA also introduced a rack mounted power amp for the MP-1, which was the B200S. This was a 2x100 Watt Stereo Solid State Power Amp, that was tuned for guitar, and they also introduced the ADA Split-Stack Cabinets, and the MC-1 foot controller.
      With a rig like this, you could rack your preamp, power amp, and any rack effects you wished to used in the MP-1's effects loop, and build a full stack that you could break down and transport much easier than a Marshall stack with a minimum of pedals on the floor!
      This was the Preamp that started the whole integrated rack mounted guitar system in the 80's! By 1988, most the big names in amplification were bringing their own versions of rack gear to the table, but by then, ADA's were already in use and on recordings, and proving themselves to be the one everyone had to beat.
      ADA was really on top of their game when they came out with this one!
      In 1992, or 1993, after the dismal response to the MP-2, ADA then decided to keep things as simple as they could for guitar players and introduced the MP-1 Classic. (My personal favorite). This was a refined version of the original MP-1, with built-in noise gate, and a stereo effects loop, and a more subtle chorus than the previous versions had, and one extra voice: Brown Tube!
      That was their last rack mount preamp offering before they vanished. Unfortunately, from what I'm told by one of the Depot members who is in Australia, none of the MP-1 Classics ever made it to the land down under. These were by my ears, the most vintage sounding preamps ADA ever made.
      Before anyone asks, the MP-2's and MP-1 Classics could not be modified like the original MP-1's because the circuitry is completely different, and much more complex then the original. The best you could do as far as tone mods is swap valves, (tubes), to suit your tastes. Some of the most popular choices are JJ's and Mullard's. Many prefer the tones of long-plate 12AX7's (ECC83's) for a warmer, more defined tone shaping curve.
      The 3TM however is the exception to that rule, and taste is subjective, so doing a bit of tube-rolling with different gain level preamp tubes is common practice for fine tuning your preamp's tones!

    Duuuuuuuuuude you finally got one ! this is my fave preamp EVER ! one thing , there are 2 trimpots on the actual 3tm tube board , what i find best to do is to roll all the EQ and presence to zero then use the 2 tubeboard trimpots to create a baseline average sound. From there you will have the full +12 to -12 (or is it 16..) range of the EQ to adjust your sound. I find if you dont do this, sometimes the eq sweet spot is like +6 or +9 leaving you with less headroom to explore and too much "minus" territory youll never use... I knew the 3tm sound as soon as you did the comparison lol , its a BEAST . Look forward to hearing more of your 3tm ROCK ON !

    @Leon Todd: Thanks for making a video of having the ADA Depot 3TM mod tube circuit board installed into your previously stock ADA MP-1 preamp. Sounds killer! I'm also the proud owner of 2 ADA Depot 3TM "Ultra" mod MP-1 preamps (3TM mod tube circuit board, noise mod, battery holder/new lithium battery, rear jack input mod, and v2.01 EEPROM chip) modified by Hairy Bagg (Robert Metzger) back in 2005. I plan on getting the MDRT transformers installed on both of my 3TM modified MP-1 preamps.
    I've also met Todd Langner in 1993, had him build my first guitar rack, and he did an EQ mod on my stock ADA MP-1 preamp. He offered me the 3TM mod tube circuit board back then and I didn't go for it at the time since I knew nothing about it. What a mistake that was! It took me 12 years later and finding the ADA Depot website with Jur providing ADA rack gear information & support and Hairy Bagg & Marshalljmp doing mods.

    For my knowledge in tube electronics, unless you using the stock MP1 with all gain at 10, I think you could make the MP1 more agressive and similar to the 3tM just by changing 2 capacitors instead of adding a tube! Its really easy to shape a pre amp sound for aggressiveness, you just need to have enough gain headroom ;)

    The ADA MP2 had more voicing, and noise gate and stereo fx loop. The ADA MP-1 classic added an extra channel, noise gate and stereo fx loop. My other ADA MP-1 has some issues which I think are simply the capacitors. I would expect some of the same units slightly different in volume tolerances in the knobs and even variances in tubes.

    You gonna love this! I have a 3TM from years ago and its still mainstay in my rack. There is a noise mod you might need to imply as well. There are pros and cons. Pros: What a FUCKIN' sound!!! HUGE GAIN. Enormous attack. The "Justice" scooped tone in a nutshell. Tube Clean also turns into a full blown EVH Brown sound that sounds awesome......CONS: Tube clean turns into EVH Brown sound. So, no more tube clean. Also, you need to tame the output and it gets noisier as a unit. That means that comparing to other preamps, the master output AND the output knob need to be pushed further up to get the same level of volume....But, overall...WHAT s SOUND. Try this after you finish: OD1: 9 OD2: 7 Master:8 Bass: 4 Mid: -10 Treble: 2 presence: 2 and just a tad of mid-boost after on around 600-75, like 2 db...For me? Instant JUSTICE. More scooped than Mesa (I know...) and huge THICK gain...

      We've been trying to talk them into that ever since they came back into the market with their early pedal reissues. They've been checking up on us at the ADA Depot, and it seems like they kind of like what we do, but that's only a guess. Maybe they consider us the dinosaurs who refuse to let go of what they did in the past, and inadvertently, maybe holding them back from their plans for the future. idk
      One thing that seems to be a solid issue with them, is they don't want to get back into rack gear. Who knows? If demand for rack gear gets high enough, that outlook could change.

I ended up replacing 2 of the 12ax7s with 5751’s and I think an ecc82. I can’t be certain it was so long ago but with the preamp tube changes and messing with the trim pot I found it a noticeable improvement that removed a lot of that brittle fizz and sort of rounded things off. • @harleyhexxe9806
      @harleyhexxe9806 3 роки тому +2

      Yes, they have several mods for the MP-1's but they all push the MP-1 into much more aggressive territory, (Mesa Recto style), and I couldn't really see the point of doing that myself, since I also own a pair of MP-2's that do all that from the factory. I have put my MP-2 rig against Mesa Dual Rectifiers in the past, and dialed in the same tones from the front panel. MP-2's are much more tricky to edit and get the tones than the MP-1, so there is a definite learning curve there. Be prepared to spend some time with it if you go looking for one! It has a LOT more in it than the MP-1 and that is why sales of it were not so good here in the States. It confused too many guitar players who simply wanted to twist a few knobs and get a good tone, and they gave up and sold them!
      Just saying...

      @peterknicked 3 роки тому +1

      @@harleyhexxe9806 i know. I am no stranger to deep editing myself, but I remeber that the Mp-2 never sounded as good as my mp1 does, but then again mine is modded ny an ampguy.

    • @harleyhexxe9806
      @harleyhexxe9806 3 роки тому +1

      @@peterknicked It's true! It didn't sound like the MP-1 even with the factory MP-1 program. Definitely harder to get the dynamics with the MP-2 than with the other preamps, but it is possible to coax more of that from the MP-2. Some of the Forum members swapped out the 12AX7's for 12AT7's to lower the gain in the preamp, or at least one of the 12AX7's, depending on how much you wanted to reduce the gain.
      As it was explained to me by Todd Langner on one of our many phone conversations, the main difference why the MP-1 and MP-2 sounded so different was because with the MP-1, there was always a certain amount of Solid State voicing mixed in with the Tube voicing. It was never completely out of the signal path. The MP-2 has no Solid State voice at all, it just has 10 different levels of Tube voices. At least that was the reason I was given. Still, I've managed to get some really great, usable tones from my MP-2 rig, using the MXC, Quad Switch, and CCP, and just putting in Mullard RI 12AX7's.

      @@harleyhexxe9806 I had my Mp1 modded back inte nineties and it changed it to be more marshally so to speak. I found out thar the mp1 really is quite sensitive to different tubes. The EHX gold worjs like a charm, but it is a quite different animal with Tung Sol tubes for example.

    • @SolarWarden88

      @@harleyhexxe9806 I can confirm this. If you're lucky enough to find an MP-2 that doesn't have noise issues and is in good shape, it's a BEAST. I actually think top-3 preamps ever made territory... Sounds crazy I know lol. But like mentioned, if you're savvy with the tone shaping controls and know how to work the channels/modes on the MP-2, you can CRUSH a Dual Rectifier hands-down, and it sounds so much better and tighter. Also agreed with Harley, the MP-2 is DEEEEEEEEEP with edit parameters and options. If you're lucky enough to find one that's in good shape, buy it! pretty sure your favorite settings sounds better on the 3T than your other two non 3T's, from what I heard on the nuno video anywho, everyone's so worried about cutting through all they seem to care about is ice picking their way to the front, in doing so they lose not only character but a of dynamics and articulation, listen to how much fatter the 3 tubes really is, way more character and feel, makes the other two sound like old digitech rp 35's... lol
    again preamp out the 3 tube stereo's OD and Gain into the other 2 for warbly and panning effects, then into 4 amps speakers situated in all 4 corners of the room..
    also you can set the 3 tubes to cut no issues, pretty sure you know that so what makes it not sounds as well as the stock units? I don't get it? not as many speckles or is it the speckle profiles? don't get it really, like a "pro" to not only explain to me what makes ita shit mod but also do a side by side?
    in any event you have the best of both as it stands so boo hoo right?
    rock on and now is a good time to call you a dick, ora gear hoarder, who you think you are joe bonamassa or something? good grief dood shit or get off the pot, figure out your sound then let someone use those units, they are so few and far inbetween and if you took a peek at today's music yea they help in a bog way, btu between you and joe B these new bands cannot get their hands on any decent gear, he has all the good guitars and amps you have all the good effects, just hoarded up, gonna create a reality show based on your two, "Gear Hoarders" S.1 Ep.1 .. "why the world is short of classic gear" try to find you two some help, perhaps Dr, Drew will appear as the resident doctor, square away this hoarding situation once and for all, release all that fantastic gear back into the wild for hair 2.0..

      I use the Voodoo Lab Ground Control Pro with a couple of Voodoo Lab GCX audio switchers. I use it to switch between the ADA MP1, Triaxis, JMP1 and a number of other rack and pedal gear. It also uses MIDI to enable full functionality of the presets you’ve created in your preamps. Works exceptionally well and worth the investment. I also did the 3TM mod, MDRT upgrade and noise mod on my MP1. Those upgrades were a game changer on what was a great preamp before hand but launched it out of the park afterwards. Another worthy investment that’ll give you great sounds and keep the preamp going for years to come.
