Sometimes I think gardeners are the worst at slowing down to smell the roses. All we can see is the black spot on the roses and that weed next to the rose and "oh crap, that thing needs water!" Thanks for the reminder to enjoy our gardens! My goal this year is to spend at least one day a week enjoying the garden and admiring how far we've come without constantly thinking of how far we have to go.

I needed this. I broke my ankle, again, the day before yesterday and I had been in the middle of major garden projects. I was overwhelmed before because I was trying to get everything done in all my project areas and with weeding. Now I have to figure out how to garden in the place I am in right now. I just need to appreciate the garden.

I feel your pain, mental and physical! Several years ago I bought a T-shirt from HortTube with Jim Putnam that says “gardening isn’t a race it’s a journey”. This year after badly hurting my knee,I remembered that on most journeys there are many occasions to stop…scenery overlooks, getting gas, meals and potty breaks, and overnight stays. Some necessary, some rejuvenating and some strictly for pleasure. I hope this isn’t too long of a stop from gardening for you and that you’re able to enjoy what you can while healing. 💕😉

I've been saying often this season, "I just want to get to the point where I can sit down and appreciate my gardens."
I sit on my back deck, morning coffee in hand, overlooking my beautiful hydrangea/roses/peony/sage/lady's mantle/blue spruce/grasses garden that I've dubbed "My Sisters' Garden." Named for my sisters, my mom and her sisters and all my girlfriend sisters.
But I can't sit long because I see the weeds to pull or the path that needs defining.
I see the light at the end of my front garden makeover vision so maybe soon I can stop to smell the flowers.
The other day, sitting on a mound of dirt to pull many weeds so I could plant dichondra silver falls as a ground cover (as seen on Jim Putnam's channel) when a couple little girls rollerskated past. The second one stopped to say, "I like your flowers." Aw, ❤️ melted.
That spurred me on to push ahead on the project. I'm about to get the long-held plants in the ground!
I think we can all say, "You/we are not alone." It's an ongoing process and that's what makes it fun. 😊❤
After 2 yrs of planning and wishing, I got to plant up my rain garden yesterday, while it was raining…what a Pleasure!❤
I don't think the garden is ever done!
But there's beauty to be enjoyed if we stand still long enough💚
My 4 yr old and I have been running around all morning in the heat and we just stopped cause we were both getting cranky and needing a break. I literally felt calmer after watching this! Perfect timing, Thank you!!! I love your space

I so needed to hear this video today! Thank you! I was feeling just like you. So I am reassessing what I’m doing, and why in the garden. I ultimately will make made some changes that will make it easier on me. Force me to slow down, realize what I’ve accomplished and enjoy it. The only time I ever sit down and enjoy my is if I have company.

So true. I try to find something beautiful from the moment I walk out the door to my car because we'll I have to go to work. The beautiful things are what I look forward to seeing more of on the weekend.
I am so glad I found your site Erin and appreciate your down to earth approach to gardening. As an over 70 year old gardener of multiple spaces (I've just added another area with a small pond!), I do become overwhelmed with the effort it takes to keep up these beautiful areas because I can't do as much as easily as I did even 5 years ago! That being said, I do take time to slow down and sit and really appreciate what my husband and I have accomplished in over 40 years in our home. Yes, smell those roses and peek inside their petals, feel the softness of lambs ears, the colorful kaleidoscope your "babies" gift you. Follow the lovely butterflies, bees, and dragonflies that dance about with grace, and enjoy and appreciate your efforts as they certainly do!
I have a rule for myself. I don’t buy any new plants until I have already planted the plants still in their pots! Who am I kidding? Today I bought the most gorgeous green echinacea! So I ran down to my garden bed gloves on with an apron, and planted them. What you don’t know is that I had a flat of the annuals that needed to be planted as well. I got through about five of those. I will never learn!
Truer words never spoken. I get so wrapped up in tending to my garden and fretting over it that I forget to slow down, stop and appreciate what I have.
I can totally relate Erin! You feel overwhelmed sometimes by the work, but not really work, as we know, but sometimes you want everything to look perfect and it possibly can’t!! I did exactly what you did in this video yesterday, appreciated all the plants blooming and coming in to bloom, how the light hit them at various times of the day. I had cataract surgery this week and have another 10 days to go before bending over very much, and the not weeding is driving me nuts! You sure can appreciate so much in our gardens under construction! Thanks for a great video. Your place looks awesome 👍👍👍

I feel your pain, Erin Just spent 5 hours dead heading, fertilizing, spraying BT on my many petunia's, mulching, watering and on and on. But now it's 5 pm and I'm out for a walk in my garden
with a glass of wine and feeling very accomplished. Tomorrow is a new day and I will start the chores again, but right now I am at peace knowing I did my share of maintenance for one day.
Thanks for this timely reminder, Erin! I retired a year ago, and it has been so nice to be able to slow down with the gardening chores. I'm in central Illinois, Zone 5b, and we are in the midst of a drought. But as I water my gardens in the morning, I now have more time to appreciate the plants that I love in all of their stages. I feel this every time this time of year! I had neighbors who don't keep up their yard infect mine with a million dandelions, my irrigation went down several times, and I need to deadhead like crazy! But today I just sat outside and enjoyed the garden for what it is!

I so needed this message today. I live in zone 5b at 7300 ' in Colorado. Our spring has been so cool many of my seedling transplants are still hanging out in my portable cold frame 😢. We have had a drought for 5-6 years and now El Nino has arrived! We have had 12 inches of rain and frequent hail storms since June 1. So my new perennial flower bed just looking great last week and full of buds is destroyed by hail. I started most of the perennials from seeds last year. Today I started the clean up and fertilizing hoping the perennials will bounce back. You have encouraged me to go out and find some.plants that survived the storm and will give me pleasure to enjoy. Fortunately, I covered the containers and annuals so if it warms up they should be gorgeous.
So thank you for this reminder to take time to enjoy my hobby.

I’ve come a long way in knowing to stop and enjoy my garden despite the weeds and uneven brick paths that need attention. I’m also going to make a point of having fresh flowers inside every day this summer. Thanks for the reminder-there is always beauty to be found and it makes the work of the garden worth every moment!
You are not alone in these feelings. I'm in Kentucky and at 11:00 it's already 84, I gave up on my planting day way too humid and hot. I had big plans to work in garden but it's going to wait. Not too much we can do about the weather.
I try to get whatever I need to get done (leaving the watering for later) before the sun comes up.
This is the best video I’ve watched this season. You make a strong point - it’s SO easy to get overwhelmed each year. I’m going to make a point to enjoy my accomplishments in the garden, rather than focus solely on “To-Dos.”
You're a funny gal!!! Love your sense of humour! I recently purchased a rolled up mattress, weighed a ton, and this old gal of 70 was able to tug and push and pull it up my stairs to the bedroom it was destined for. I'll NEVER forget the popping sounds that came from it after I unwrapped the multitude layers of plastic, to form its current shape. My son indicates it's a good mattress and enjoys his new room when he comes for a visit. I can't recall the brand name of the mattress but for a queen size the price was RIGHT.
Indeed, I plant FLOWERS to cut and enjoy in my home, as I adore flowers, starting with the daffodils, tulips, peonies, alliums, irises, glads and finally dahlias.

One way that I make myself appreciate the beauty of my garden no matter the state it's in is I challenge myself every morning to find something beautiful to take a photo of and post on my social media with the caption of, "It's a beautiful day in the neighborhood" and sometimes a little blurb about what's in the photo. I started this practice in 2020 when there was so much negativity out there and I was in the midst of recovering from surgery having my hamstring tendon reattached, which was brutal. It lifted my spirits and still does.
Everyone tells me they look forward to my daily posts and I do too because I am always looking at my garden with an eye towards beauty for the next photo I want to take and appreciating all God has blessed me with.
Thanks for reminding me that there are still some pretty things in my yard that the deer haven't eaten.
You spoke to my heart in your intro. The list of things to do is long and when I look at my garden I see what it is missing which is silly as it is very abundant. Thanks for the reminder
We all need to stop, smell and touch our roses, peonies, whatever, because some of those beauties only bloom for a very short window of time and then poof - you have to wait until next year for another show. Making bouquets from my flowers is one of my favorite things to do after spending so many hours in the garden nurturing those beauties to thrive and grow. Enjoy the things you love today, because tomorrow is promised to no one.
I'll give you an Amen! I've been thinking too how I feel so behind in the garden only to miss the magic there is! Lesson number 1. Focus on what I have. Instead of what isn't. 🎉

You expressed so eloquently what most of us feel! I am retired (allegedly!) and still feel overwhelmed by what I haven’t done in the garden. My list seems to increase rather than decrease! But I do treat myself to a stroll through the garden at the beginning and end of each day no matter my schedule. Now you have inspired me to do it more mindfully to appreciate the beauty and what I have accomplished. A second stroll can always be done to take notes. I bet it will be shorter than had I made it first time through.

I really needed this video! Been feeling a little overwhelmed with my garden this season for a number of reasons and have even thought at times, why am I even bothering when it's stressing me out more than bringing joy? And then I watch some of the other garden channels and they have constant stock of plants on hand and help. I've been gardening since I was little, so it's in my blood. But anyway, thank you for this video. It's refreshing to know that there's other gardeners out there that deal with this same thing. Your property is beautiful! Good job!
Yes we all get overwhelmed esp as we get older and have health issues popping up, caregiving responsibilities that never en etc. I try to take a few minutes - really late when it has cooled off - to check ou what looks good in the garden. I put a star and the name of the flowering plant or tree in my journal. I also take pictures.

I loved this video because at this moment my weeds have gotten so far ahead of me they are up to my hips! Erin I have to tell you, I planted Lamium years ago and I regret that I could ever have liked it! This year it has suddenly taken over . You can’t just pull it out!!! It’s got these roots super-glued to the soil and it’s a tug of war for sure. Seems like there is NO getting rid of it. Buyer beware.

I agree. I just like having a project going. I’ve been clearing some overgrowth and cutting down small trees, dead limbs from bigger trees etc. But instead of burning them, I’m building little raised beds with natural trellises. It’s fun and I can get all creative with it. Then I compost in it. One day I’ll get it planted. Have a nice day! 🧤

I'm always amazed, when I walk my garden, at what is blooming today that wasn't there yesterday ... always expect the unexpected ... sometimes I find things I forgot I planted !!! thanks for the stroll thru your beautiful landscape - you have created a garden of wonder for sure 😄
Wow the first minute and a half is exactly the conversation I had with my mom the last few days! So funny! Yes I believe we all feel that way from time to time!
I feell the same as you. After starting one month later excavating the house to put a new french drain, let me tell you that this terrain massacre has left me speechless. the whole winter I have been growing plans in my basement thinking I would start a flower farm, 2500 cells plugs and dahlias etc... wanted to get out of my basement ended up in my garage for more than a month and now the guy to install the sidewalks bricks keep puponig truck problems, trailer problems the wether alouette!!! and my plugs waiting desperately to be planted also left me speechless. the flower farm will not happen the owner of the property did not want me to do my project. So all these plants have now to be planted at home in these conditions. i don't think I will see the summer and enjoy my garden this year but I promise next year I will sit in my hamac with a margarita all summer long!
Lady's Mantle is at it's best here in zone 6, too. I have so much I decided to share the flowers with several local florists so others could enjoy the lovely color. It just makes all the other flowers look great! All the roses are looking beautiful here and the fragrance of the elderberry flowers is just heavenly. I just love your garden setting, Erin.
I love this! At least once a week I drag my husband to take a garden walk with me.😜 I think he enjoys it as much as I do! You are right we need to slow down and enjoy the gardens.

I am SOOOOO glad and relieved to hear a pro gardener like you express EXACTLY how I feel right now about my garden and all the work that needs to be done!! I thought it was just me and i was incompetwnt and disorganized! ! I feel so much better now that I know so many other gardeners feel the same. And I just happened to decide today that I needed to grab a glass of wine, sit at the patio table, look around me and enjoy the view I've created for myself! I feel insane about my garden too. I question why I do this to myself every year. It is just so hot.🌻🌻 Even if it was to a point I would enjoy it, the bugs and heat keep me away. But I have my whole life and I don't have to do it all today.

@TheImpatientGardener We had new walkways put in and thr grass got destroyed. I know! It was way too much for one day. I told my husband next time only one skid at a time!
Perfect timing! I've been in such a garden funk the last few days. We were in desperate need of rain here in Maryland but it has flattened so many of my plants. I created a little cutting garden area and I went out (between the rain drops) and just about cried looking at everything laying on the ground. I also had deer come into the garden about 2 weeks ago and they had themselves a delicious dinner. I'm going to look at the positive though. We were in a drought and needed these days of rain so badly and we all know pinching and cutting back flowers usually helps create new growth. Thanks for the encouragement. Glad I'm not alone in feeling the garden blues these days.

I never really thought about my garden that way. I get wrapped up trying to make it perfect and not taking the time out to see the beauty of what I created, I really need to stop and smell the roses and stop worrying about what other people think of my garden.
I am always amazed at how much gardening you cram into your life Erin. It's amazing and addicting to watch and learn with you in your videos. I am excited to see how you adapt what you have to something lower maintenance. I think it was in your conversation with Roy Diblik that you spoke of how exciting it is when you get to the tweaking stage of a garden. I am barely there but can see how much fun that process is. I am re-working the yard in a home that was built and occupied since 1945, a cute craftsman! It was unfortunately left for 10 years just before it was purchased and flipped, so the vines had a field day going everywhere,..we have honeysuckle, Virginia creeper, old crepe myrtle trees that have tried to grow a forest all on their own and then there is the ever infamous poison ivy - vines going up big oaks that are bigger than my wrist!!! We cut them about a foot or so above ground so now they are really popping up everywhere from the roots! Oh, let me add, we both are allergic to them, so we have kept a nice fresh crop of PI rashes all summer! Yikes!!! So, keep up the good work and thank the Lord you have such a beautiful, well tended place to play!!! We love it!!! Thanks a ton!!! ❤🌷🌼🌻🦋

Oh my how I needed to hear this!!! All I seem to think is “ I need to do this first, so I can do this, but what about that?!” My health has been crap for the past 5 years, so just the bare minimum done during that time. Jumped in with both feet this spring to whip it into shape. It’s now summer and I’m STILL whipping it, but obsessing over it is whipping me mentally & physically. Not what I wanted to happen. “Stop and enjoy playing in the dirt without worrying about what I need to do next!” THAT is what I need to be saying to myself!
Beautiful species. Each spring I feel overwhelded and each autumn I plant! Go figure!

Oh Erin do I ever hear you. I too “suffer” that feeling of ….oh my it’s sooo much what am I doing!! 🥴. I’m 66 yrs old now with a prosthetic hip and it’s harder now, the getting up and down. But.. but I have gardened with love and passion my whole life. I’m not going to stop now! 💚😊. I push myself and once my bare hands are pulling weeds and moving around plants I’m truly at peace.

Oh my gosh! I'm feeling the same way. With the heat, weeds and unplanted things I'm totally overwhelmed with my garden. I worked out there today in 88degree heat and felt really sick. Thanks for this video. This summer I am starting from scratch with a blank rectangle of lawn and a new-to-me home. Exciting, right?! But all the “building from scratch” work is easier dreamt than done! One little project at a time. 😊 And that’s the way it should be - just hard to remember sometimes.
Glad to hear I'm not the only one who feels overwhelmed as times, when you consistantly hear that the garden brings a sense of calm I think what am I doing wrong, I'm not calm, I have a to do list as long as my arm and start stressing out 😲😲.thanks for reminding us to take a step back and enjoy all the hard work...I now try to keep one day a week to look and enjoy as I walk around my garden but I still pull the odd weed as I walk 🤣🤣🤣
