I think that the origin for the basilisk's weasel weakness is the observation of mongooses and cobras.
Pretty much.
Yeah, seeing as dragons were fairly synonymous with snakes I think this is definitely the answer. Also in “The priory of the orange tree” they have a creature called the ichneumon which is basically a giant mongoose. And as far as I can tell that’s supposedly their name in medieval mythology as well. And that version makes a lot more sense
Brat me to it. I was thinking the same thing
me too
Mongoose VS. King Cobra. It's even called KING cobra and it wears a hood (the basilisk's crown). And mongoose (mongooses? Mongeese?) are impervious to cobra venom...
Don’t you think that this is the entire reason for them putting the mongoose v snake in the script?
There's a similar story about the basilisk in the cellar in Warsaw: One day, a baker's daughter in Vienna was getting water from the well, when she noticed a revolting smell. It was a basilisk. The baker asked men to get down there and fight the beast, but no one dared. No one except his own apprentice (who of course was also in love with the baker's daughter, because what good story doesn't have romance in it?) The baker agreed that if the apprentice could vanquish the beast, he would let him marry his daughter. So the apprentice went down into the well armed with amirror, turned the mirror to the basilisk, and the basilisk, ashamed by his own appearance, turned to stone.
And then thw two married and lived happily ever after.
The moral of the story being that all good relationships require self-reflection? 😁
man, he got some real furniture-breaking s*x after that from his future wife and continued getting it after marriage too.
Haha let’s indeed make that the moral of the story!
The Basilisk was so ashamed of its self image it straight up went 🗿🗿🗿🗿🗿🗿
In my home city of Basel (switzerland), the Basilisk is an important cultural symbol. Statues and fountains are found everywhere. It is said to live in the sewers and attack anyone that goes after it
Also, another very good reason not to visit sewers.
Sounds like a medieval Pennywise to me.
Hmmm interesting
Just send some weasels after it
I think I speak for everyone when I say, "we demand that you give us the 12 part series about the great weasel drought of 1587." How could you not? There's so much influence there! We want our weasels!!
If I recall correctly all you have to do to kill a basilisk is to get lvl 50 slayer and a mirror shield. By then you should have rune equipment anyway so they’re not particularly tough.
Epic Hacks!
I get that reference!
Weasel Stank would be a great name for a rock band.
I would love to go to a Weasel Tank concert lol
Don't care for rock music, but it still sounds like an awesome band name
Or the lead singer of said rock band.
Screeching Weasel is the name of a rock band
Stinky Scurriers would be great too.
I absolutely love this channel and all that they do. Thank you all for providing so much ❤
We love doing it!!! Thank you so much for watching!
Looking forward to your epic series on the great weasel drought of 1587! Getting to the parts of history nobody talks about!
The Bigfoot in the background as they said "what couldn't we kill?" Just reminds me of swampthing from DC comics. An indestructible avatar of nature, capable of overcoming anything man throws at him.
3:25 That caught me off guard. Extremely. Keep doing jokes like these
😉
When considering fugu and almonds, we have to admit that not only would people try to figure out how to kill the basilisk, but how to eat it, too.
Boil the body thirty-seven times, replacing the water each time. Then remove the organs and poison glands. Then boil the body another thirty-seven times, replacing the water each time. Then cook the basilisk meat as you see fit. Each boiling has to be for at least half an hour, or until half the water has evaporated.
If serving to children under the age of fourteen, boil the body another twelve times before organ removal and another six after for every year under the age of fourteen.
I mean, in Norse mythology we have Fafnir - a dragon - having his heart eaten after being slain by the adopted son of his brother...
Capsaicin, too
The Slayers absolutely went to nuts with a delicacy connoisseur hiring literal dragon slayers to hunt for a giant whale monster using Gourry with his mane as lure, and Zel as an... anchor... and in the end, well, they had the whole digging it under ground for months for the poison to get out of the steak lmao. Poor Lina not getting her meal.
I found the idea of Pliny the Elder shouting "oh no! My one weakness!" as he is covered by volcanic ash to be immensely funny for some reason
A video filled with humor and deep philosophical questions about mankind...wonderful
The weasel beating a basilisk is probably based on a mongoose killing a cobra
3:10 The animation has Link's new arm using the ultrahand ability. Someone has been playing Tears of the Kingdom, and I'm here for it!
I laughed so hard when I saw that! Now we need to get Nintendo to add a basilisk and weasels. It fits with current game mechanics: elemental enemies can be destroyed easily by using the opposite type of damage. Could be a secret boss that's only easy to defeat if you know about weasels. :D Of course, now I'm imagining fusing weasels to arrows.
1:48 nah the animators havin too much fun with da chicken man 😂😂
In my notifications, this came up as "Extra History …and how to kill it!" so I thought it was gonna be some channel burnout video.
Technically most episodes are that XD
I once had a weird dream where a menu indicated a dish called “lingonberry basilisk.” Any theories about what it would be? I like the idea of a fruit-filled pastry “sandwich” with a crown-shaped top half…
I love extra history and extra mythology 👌👌🏻👌🏼👌🏽👌🏾👌🏾👌🏿
We love you!
According to Pliny the Elder, the Basilisk was a small snake, about twelve fingers in length.
Wait what. A giant basklisk is a child of a toad and a chicken?
Incorrect. It's a chicken egg (laid by a male chicken) that is then incubated by a toad. The toad itself does not mate with the male chicken.
Weasels and Basilisk are natural enemies; like weasels and hyenas, or weasels and owls, or weasels and foxes or even weasels with other weasels.
The basilisk is such an awesome creature. Although, it is kind of comical that a weasel was the solution to such a beast. LoL
It’s high level intellectual commentary like, “weasel stank”, that keeps me coming back to this channel. 😂😂keep up the good work.
Always UBER Professional
He could have saved his arm if he had a Phoenix with him. And by Phoenix. I'm not talking about Harry Potter, I of course I'm talking about an aim-54 Phoenix missile launch from a tomcat fighter
“Weasel in the hole!”
When did you start working blue?
I love the TOTK reference at 3:08! *BRILLIANT*! Lol thanks for the great videos!
I recognized that reference to Dinobot’s death from Transformers Beast War.
“Tell my story, the rest is silence”
You really should make "how to" tutorials for wizards... Get them Galleons 😂
Love these mid-week videos guys! You always make my day!🎉🎉🎉❤❤❤❤❤❤
So happy to do so!
@@extrahistory You guys rock ❤️🔥🤘
Great episode! The moment you started talking about basilisks I was like "please mention the one in Warsaw!" and I wasn't disappointed.
You could make a video about another Polish legend - the one obout the Wawel Dragon, so that Krakow won't be jealous of Warsaw. 😉
As a weasel, I am eagerly awaiting this “12 part fictitious weasel series.”
4:45 That would actually make for a pretty good animated series about anthropomorphic animals on UA-cam
Basilisk: You hurt me, ill make you pay a heavy price! Come at me if you DARE!!!!
Knight: I brought a Weasel!
Basilisk: *OH CRAP!!!*
"Groovy!" - Murrus, after cutting out his own hand, in order to survive.
Edit: That part about the "rivalry" between the bird and the jet engine take one or two laughs from me.
Amazing video as always! You guys are the BOSSES!😊😊😊❤❤❤❤❤
this video went places I didn't think it would go for better or worse
So I DID use the LSD sugar cubes in my morning coffee! This explains so much.
3:08 LEGEND OF ZELDA REFERENCE DETECTED
Really cranked up on the humor for this episode. I approve!
Nice video, now we need that Weasel Drought series
100%
Love Ol' Sasquatch putting up his hand.
3:08 Mate played too much Tears of the Kingdom💀💀💀
The Weasles Vs. The Basilisk remind me of Pikmin Vs. Overly Large Boss
How do we kill another type of basilisk? You know, a more " futuristic" basilisk that quite a lot of people already talk about
:)))))))))))
Huh....a weasel is a Basilisk's weakness, and Slytherin's Basilisk's downfall in HP was caused becaused The Heir kɨdnɑpped a WEASLey. Coincidence? I think not
I am succumbing to the gravity of my predicament: in-between jobs; living in a house with work-seeking parents; loving words which is said by many to have been with 'god' whom I curse and love like a ghost-victim...living near the water that helps wash things away... 'the nightmare realms of rumors', have your copyright lawyers on standby cuz I may steal that [wonderful] line. well done. well done. well done. Late antiquity and the Early Medieval period are my passions.
Pretty underrated channel tbh
Thank you so much for all the support! Our Artists, Writers and Production Crew tip our hats to you.

Love the pokemon tcg reference.
I'm very upset you didn't actually make a series covering the Great Weasel Drought. You can't be leaving out these important parts of history like that.
5:24 - 5:30 Nah, it was probably Weasel Stomping Day; it's tradition after all.
5:32 - 5:45 You can bet that convict regretted his life choices after having some time to reflect.
Hey, you've got weasels on your face.
I need that 12 part series NOW
You guys are a wonderful example for me and my husband. Not as much in the opposites situation, but seeing most gender roles flipped in another couple and one I so admire is very helpful. Thank you so much for sharing ❤
At "bird and jet engine" I was ROFL.
Why?
Back in the early 70s, I had a bf who was in the Navy and stationed at the local Naval Air Station (NAS), and serviced the engined on the aircraft. Everything from jet fighters to the P3 Orion sub-chasers, which were prop jets. NAS Moffett Field, now Moffett Federal Airport, is atvthe south end of San Francisco Bay.
The stories bf told about the problems of cleaning chopped and diced seagull remains out of the various engines! And all raw, too.
Anyone else notice the TOTK reference? At 3:06 ?
0:23 that’s the sas quatch
More like *sus* quatch, amirite?
militarized weasels… good idea, will keep in mind
7:12 "our world is facing problems"
Problems that will bug us for eternity
… this is quite incredibly amusing and deeply, deeply cynical… yet also lighthearted and totally on point.
Could it have been a Komodo dragon
There should be a JRPG where if you equip a weasel to your armament, you'll be immune to a basilisk's venom/petrification.
These videos are always great and inspiring
You need a Gryffindor sword for that.
Pliney the Elder: “oooo nooo bullets my one weakness”
Why does this sound like the original story was: weasels in an area carried a form of parasite/virus - which also killed the local large venomous reptiles/snakes (think Komodo Dragons ). I can see the alterations of the story into this one almost step by step in hypothetical mythology terms.
Basilisks are metaphors for various Plagues. Plagues are spread ba rodents. Weasels were used to get rid of rodents, before Cats were imported from Egypt.
Since Basilisks (Plagues) were less likely to spread, when weasels were around, that clearly means, that weasels kill Basilisks.
The amount of dark humor in this episode was so amazing
Weasel toss animation. Absolute gold!
The Sasquatch/Big foot cameo was genius! We surely can't kill that one.
“Tell my story”🤣🤣👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
There’s already a Basilisk that is a massive threat to humankind. Roko’s Basilisk.Cognitobazards be crazy
All hail the glorious weasel! Long may they rain!
Dude totk reference had me rolling
Note to self: pack disco ball costume if spelunking in basilisk territory.
2:42 is that where the idea for medusa came from?
I want, no DEMAND a Great Weasel Drought of 1587 series. Maybe on Extra Mythology?
Damn. This reminds me of a story in the paradeims lost short story collection. What the "people" of this particular town refered to as a mirror killer is the real origin of the myths of the basilisk, the gorgans, the hydra and some other similar things.
Im kinda sad, that you didn't include the polish basilisk
Piercing the heart and releasing the poison could've gone much worse. When Sinh got stabbed, it flooded the entire town of Shulva with poison
Dude that ultrahanding a weasel to the shield had me in stitches.
as a proud Warsawian, i feel pleasantly noticed. This is the exact story my grandpa used to tell me bedtime.
"Weasel in the Hole!" is my new favourite phrase. :D
"Oh no! My one weakness!"
Lol. That was a good one.
So... how do basilisks avoid accidentally glancing into a pool of water or any other reflective surface?
PANR has tuned in.
weasels were domesticated like cats at the time of Pliny the Elder
Well what do you know, searing hot ash is also my weakness. i guess i have something in common with Pliniy himself.
So if you want a truly epic battle pit a basilisk against a honey badger
here at 46 min after post and your channel is the best to build lego sets too
Walpole caused the Weasel Drought, didn't he? It's always Walpole...
Now I want the 12-part series on the Weasel Drought.
Fun Fact, we could actually use gigantic space mirrors either to cool down earth or to help make mars more habitable (as an escape option, less ideal though of course)
Cant wait for the great weasel drought of 87 series.
When will you guys explain Don Quixote?
Can you do one for the Lambton worm? County Durham story. might not count as a myth but still could make an interesting video!
A bigger basilisk... like say... Roko's Basilisk? But I guess that would be... virtually impossible. >.>
Weasels, really? XD I don't know what I find funnier, that, or the little crown on the Basilisk's head. Also, I was never really a Harry Potter fan (and definitely not now), but I saw the first two movies at least, and seeing this video, I couldn't help but remember the second movie and think about how weird the climax could have been. XD
Hmm, there's probably a Weasley joke in there, somewhere, too.
Bird vs jet engine is crazy
OOoooh, THAT'S the kind of videos I'd fell in love with your chanel for ^_^
Of course, by talking about the Basilisk, you have made yourself a target.
And now, I did too. Dangit.
