It has been nearly 20 years since I visited this Hochosterwitz Castle. The video brings a new perspective to the stills I have of that visit. But even it pales in comparison to an in person visit. The public areas have been expanded and improved a lot. The extensive armaments shown in various rooms that appear to be open to the public were limited to a smaller sampling in 2002. No cannons were displayed. I did recognize a VERY large suit of armor that was there when I visited. seen about 5:13 in the video. There is an interesting story that the guide tells about that suit of armor. If you visit be certain you ask them about it. To truly experience this magnificent castle you need to walk the entry way path from the ground up. The way a visiting dignitary or invading a soldier would. It is not a fairy tale castle but a fortress that is stunning in both form and function.
That is so interesting,I would have never noticed, thank you for pointing that out. Can you tell me the name of who wore that suit? Or anything they told you about it.
Well at least it is being used and not wasting away very good ideas for restaurants and events another beautiful place of history but a useful building by using is taking care as the history lives on,bless you all!!! Thank you nice tour!!!!
Reminds of the one in Heidelberg. Back in 2004 I climbed all the steps straight up. Man that was exhausting and I was in good shape then. But the top was well worth it. Wish I'd seen this one!
I used to visit a lot of kastels with my parents when i was a kid. Schloss Neuswannstein is the one i will never forget for its beauty. Sadly i never visited this one, it is such a masterpiece!
Neuschwanstein isn't an original medieval castle, it was build in the 19th century from scratch. Hochosterwitz on the other hand was indeed already an medieval castle, some fortifications were added in the 16th century.
@@rizzochuenringe669 So it's not a medieval castle, so what. It's still awesome and fascinating. The construction and the art work, the grotto, the fountains. They are all so majestic. Definately worthy of royalty. Fit for a King. I visited Neuschwanstein when I was only 16 years old and I am 60 now. It made an impression on me that has lasted a lifetime. I hope to return to my beloved Bavaria one day. I consider it my adopted homeland. Hochosterwitz is stunning as well. So please don't try and start a debate on which one is better. They both have individual beauty and uniqueness. So one is older, big deal. That don't mean that it is better. It just means it's older. That's it.
They have the largest suit of armor I've ever seen. If the guy wasn't a lot least 7' tall I'm skinny? Really neat castle been 20 years since I was there.
If you visit there, 120 miles to the east is another beautiful hilltop castle: Riegersburg. Both are fascinating, and both are surrounded by beautiful out-of-the-way countryside.
Stunning castle. I did not notice any chimneys or fireplaces. Heat and light must have been provided by another source. Capturing and dissipating energy from the ether? Check out the era of Tartaria on UA-cam. 🤔
It appears larger on the outside, more of a fortress than castle imo. Interesting how the ceiling was built with sculpted logs affixed on the walls which had a large "shelf" to place the logs on both sides. The armory was also very packed, I wonder if that was really where they stored equipment or it's just where they found a place to display the weapons from various periods in history. Cool experience anyway.
eternitynaut. You crazy? The fortresses of the Romans were originally called CASTELLA and CASTELLUMS. In England a defensible building is a CASTLE, not a MANOR, in France a chateau-fort. (fortress). What you call a shelf for the beams is called a CORBEL.
It's the real-life Eyrie of the Vale! You know, the ancient Westerosi Castle, (and seat of House Arryn, one of the oldest lines of Andal nobility,) within the Vale of Arryn. Situated in the Mountains of the Moon on a shoulder of the peak known as the Giant's Lance, several thousand feet above the valley below. Although small compared to the seats of other Great Houses in Westeros, the Eyrie is considered impregnable to attack. During wintertime, the Arryns seek refuge against the cold in the Gates of the Moon at the base of the mountain. Enemies of the House often finding themselves locked up in the infamous Sky Cells. #TheVale 👍
Today Hochosterwitz has 15 (!) gates to pass. Those days many people paid with their lives or health on one of the old 14 gates. Today people pay a way more moderate price on the 15th gate - and a not so painful one 😄 (by the way - the entry fee is absolutely ok. They have to keep that jewel in good conditions)
It's a very pretty castle and great scenery. I wish you would have told why these things were important and what part they played in what county's history. Thanks.
This is a visual story, it is meant to encourage you to discover more about this castle. There is a good historical synopsis at the end of the film. This isn't a history lesson, it is a visit to a monument to the past. Thank you for your comment. I hope you watched it to the end.
Suggestion: Put the history at the beginning to give a better understanding of what is being shown. Regardless, I enjoyed your visual tour and it’s accompanying music. Thank you.

Dogs are welcome in Europe, they are cleaner than many people. In Europe, dog owners are very conscientious to clean up after their dogs, I lived in America, now Europe, it is better in Europe, we have dog bag stations for distribution and receiving the waste in most public areas. I guess you aren't aware of these? Dogs are great!

What's the history of that one huge set of armor with a two handed sword at 4:22 ? That's one well equipped armory.

We will be going in April . We are in our sixties in so so shape . Is walking up difficult ?
The elevator makes it very easy, the walk down is worth it. Take your time. I am in my 60s, no problem. We love the region.

The style changes over the decades and generations, those are the owners today...

The music is very nice, does anyone knows what is it call?
Dizzying array of fabulous historic items but just speeding through with no descriptions. Will have to research it online.
Can you even imagine what it took to build it? For me, just changing my oil is a chore.
So nice there's no voiceover!
This castle needs an ornate wood-burning stove. The present perfunctory stove does the castle injustice.
