Wow! I can't believe I'm getting to finally see this. This footage was mentioned in NICK CAVE: The Birthday Party and Other Epic Adventures by Robert Brokenmouth (a horribly written, complete mess of a book that happens to contain lots of good info), where Mick Harvey complains about the smoke machine and pixelated video production that covered the footage in stupid boxes, which is more than apparent here. They also had to cut into "Big-Jesus-Trash-Can" mid-verse because Nick Cave sang, "It's a fucking rotten business this" instead of censoring himself like he told them he would. It's also worth noting that the absence of legendary bassist Tracy Pew is noticeable, but Barry Adamson (ex-Magazine at this point) does a surprisingly good job of filling in. Pew was (briefly) serving time in Australian jail for several drunk driving and petty theft charges during the time this was filmed. The Dutch VPRO studio footage of The Birthday Party is MUCH better, as you can tell by watching their performance of "Junkyard". Apparently, they also performed "Big-Jesus-Trash-Can" there as well, so I would LOVE for that footage to surface! Thanks for digging this up and posting!
Some stupid geezer named Robin Lobb thought we wanted to watch the Birthday Party through venetian blinds performing in a bush fire. There is about only 20 seconds of clear footage that is not utterly destroyed by crappy digital effects. That being said its a wonderful performance with Rowland in fine form
Beyond Postpunk, beyond Goth, beyond fuckever...! BP were a band from another world.
First time I've seen this since it was broadcast - thanks for posting. Riverside got a lot of complaints at the time but I remember it fondly.
