FLIGHT CHOPS DISCLAIMER:
I am a "weekend warrior" private pilot, I fly for fun with no intentions of going commercial. I have had my PPL for over 15 years, but still consider each flight a learning experience - I generally take detailed notes after each flight to remind myself what went well or what I could do to improve.... Having the GoPro cameras to record flights like this is invaluable. I find these self analysis videos very helpful in my constant quest to improve, and am happy to share. Feedback is invited; however, please keep it positive.
Your instructor is INCREDIBLE. One of my favorite quotes: "Here's the difference between what's LEGAL and what's SMART."
Reminds me of my shop teacher. "There is the wrong way, the right way and MY way."
that's what I thought as well, excellent instructor
he reminds me of a saying a pilot friend once told me. There are old pilots, and there are bold pilots, but there are NO old bold pilots.
Most import: on the 430 don't forget the $600 button. If you forget to toggle between VOR and GPS the new checkride costs $600....
nameless When switchin a nav source or switching nav frequencies I was taught the pneumonic TITTS (I know not exactly PG) so it was later changed to FITTS
Tune or Frequency
Identify
TOGGLE
Twist OBS
Steer
Can someone explain as to why, I thought if the obs was set to cdi, then it would be set for the nav freq tuned, and say you tuned in a freq snd the obs on the 430 was set to GPS the cdi wouldnt eork np?
@@nicholasb1231 The 430 sends both GPS and VOR/ILS data to a single CDI. The unit has no way to determine which source should be displayed so that must be selected manually.
For IFR flight the primary navigation must be from the CDI so failing to properly select the mode is grounds for failing the checkride. Hence the $600 button.
@@nicholasb1231 note that there is a setting on the gps to make it automatically select gps or vloc depending on the procedure selected, but you can turn off that feature too. It will also put the frequency into the secondary so you can hit v.
Whether or not you're in the Stearman, it's always great to see Dennis in a video. Really looking forward to seeing more IFR flights!
Two things from me. First, please do the sim videos! I earned my PPL in 2008 and have used sims for over 20 years to practice procedures. My instrument training has been a stop/start affair similar to yours. The sim has been essential for me to keep my head in the game during a break to practice different procedures. I'd love to see how you incorporate it into your own training. Second, Dennis is the man! He is such a knowledgeable and cool pilot and I really enjoy hearing his explanations. He also looks like he could break into the guitar solo from Layla at any point! (surely I'm not the only that sees the resemblance)
I couldn't agree more about sim use. I do two sim flights every morning when I get up: 1) one normal departure and one approach landing; and 2) a partial panel flight. I set some kind of failure in XPlane and complete the flight with no vacuum, for example. When I fly in actual IMC I'm super comfortable--I love it, actually.
The more Dennis the better - his explanations are most .. instructive. Two thumbs up on the idea of sim-related videos as well. Make sure you let us know the details of your setup - if not in the video, then in your Patreon or in the comments.
Thanks for the support Paul! And heck yes, I'll be sharing the sim PC details and how I am fitting it into my workflow - Dave my buddy and warbird check pilot is actually building it for me - we just finished deciding on the parts list!
Hey Steve, unrelated to the video, but I just visited Canada for the first time; the mission was to ferry a Dash 8 after its C check back home to Riga, Latvia (we do them in Canada now because you guys happen to be good and quick at it). Absolutely beautiful country, super friendly people, and although there was not much going on in Halifax it was still interesting to see something different to Europe. Flying across Canada to Goose Bay and onto Keflavik over Greenland must have been one of the coolest things ive done in my career, as I’d seen a lot of your videos and always wanted to fly in that part of the world- felt surreal to actually do it. Best of luck with your future training, and of course your awesome vlogs.
Thanks for the content,
-A fan from Europe
Hello, I'm glad you liked Canada, If you come back, check out the West Coast :) Its quite spectacular (when its not on fire... :( )
Steve,
I really enjoy your style of story telling too! Most youtuber's try to come across as know-it-alls!
I appreciate your candor and humility by showing that you are learning like everyone else, and may not know everything!
We always have something to learn and someone to teach!
Steve you are doing a really great job relating your learning experience to us all!
I love these status vlogs, they show all the effort that actually goes into being a good pilot instead of the glamour that lots of other people only show. I'm starting commercial pilot training on the 12th of April and videos like these are really motivating me to get started and be prepared for it.
Also, I would LOVE to see what you figure out for at home training.
I highly recommend x plane with a yoke and trim. Some people are happy with the electric trim but I sprung for the trim wheel because that's what I have in the plane. They model the Garmin 430w very well, and it saves learning that with the Hobbs running.
Awesome! I am really looking forward to logging some time with a 430 at home where I can pause it and play with it
Ill second xplane with yoke, not only does the 430w work very similar (minus some info pages like raim prediction, at least in version X) you can also hook up your Ipad & foreflight thru wifi and run the flight as if it were real thru the sim. Wont improve stick and rudder skills but Amazing tool for working out procedures, holding the plane steady while briefing the approach, making sure to set the timer on timed approaches and holds and things of that nature. Really helps to build a flow so that you can stay ahead of the airplane
@@nicholaskrotki5557 Yes! And there's just a setting on the x plane data settings page to turn ipad on, and a setting in foreflight under devices. There's no need to install extra software. I don't recommend Microsoft FSX, because the databases are very outdated and aren't synced with the nav data like they are on x plane (and FSX don't model WAAS at all).
@@FlightChops Garmin also makes a standalone windows program that simulates the 430w and some of the others.
“Sooo, we have a Vegetarian Dog”....LOL
The choice of words @5:22.. Priceless!
Sim IFR videos would certainly be useful!
This is true. Don't underestimate the value of us flight simmers!
I could just 'like' some of the earlier comments to the same effect, but I figured I'd add another vote for the flight sim videos, and let you know how much I enjoy these status vlogs as well.
Brilliant to see videos with Dennis again. Have been a fan of this channel for a couple of years now, thank you Steve for inspiring wannabe pilots like myself. The older videos with Dennis during your tail wheel conversion and the mountain flying series etc are the ones I go back to and rewatch over and over again, hugely informative and simple but engaging. For now simulators are as close as I can get, so it would be fantastic to see your setup and how you're able to perform useful training with them.
Just passed my instrument checkride a few weeks ago. Now I just need a good cloudy day to put it in practice! :)
Good luck!
I passed my checkride last week and was fortunate to have a day of 3000 scattered a few days later which was perfect for dipping a toe in.
Come to Canada, lol, We have more cloudy rainy days than anything else :)
Depends on where you are and the season though.
West coast in winter.
I like the instructors relaxed demeanor, no doubt tons of experience, and his relaxed mode reminds me of Dr House of tv drama fame, love to know all the a/c he's flown in his career, and in Canada managing weather is so important
The 430 takes a little bit of getting used to but once you get it, it’s a great tool. Definitely worthwhile having a sim to learn with and it would be great to see that in the IFR vlogs 👍
Hi Steve,
I love how Dennis words thing...lol.
Take care,
Be safe.
Incredible info! Even for instrument pilots this is such a great reminder of common sense dealing with icing and preflight briefing...
Thanks Niko!
Dennis! Welcome back to the channel! And yes, home sim videos are definitely appreciated.
About to restart again myself! Huge fan of this series! Passed my written the same week your written pass vid came out! Awesome to be flying along through this process with you!
I also want to see the SIM videos. So much of IFR flying is familiarity and proficiency with the navigator you're using. My navigator didn't do something I was expecting it to do on the check ride, and it was great to be able to troubleshoot it while in the middle of an approach, something I wouldn't have been able to do if my instructor wasn't such a hard ass about me being able to use the navigator without thinking.
Also, I gotta say that I love your instructor. My instructor insisted we do all our flights in the system as real IFR flights, and it made it so I felt totally prepared and comfortable when I got my rating and started flying IMC on my own. Having an instructor that has real world IFR experience also makes a big difference, and I think your icing conversation demonstrated that.
Great vid, Steve. It's fun watching you learn and it reminds me that I am much happier watching this stuff on video than I am trying to learn to fly myself, because it's just too freakin' complicated for me.
BTW, at 6:09ish, in the office with your instructor (who I like a lot) just adjacent to his left shoulder, against the wall is a copy of my grandfather's cloud chart (it's just below the map on the wall). My grandfather, Louis D. Rubin, Sr. started Cloud Chart Inc, in the late 1960's in Richmond, VA where he was known as "The Weather Wizard" and he developed a system of using cloud formations and wind directions to predict weather accurately. His cloud charts, made from photographs he had taken over decades of him teaching himself meteorology, became standard issue in ATC towers, ship's bridges, meteorological institutes and all manner of military installations worldwide. Over the years, with modern technology taking over, his charts have fallen somewhat out of favor, but they are still out there, as you can see! They are still available at: cloudchart.com/
which is run by my cousin (his granddaughter).
I was lucky to get six hours of actual on one day of training, including a circle to land approach! No autopilot, either. I was covered with the smell of fear after that.
Haha - I feel you.
Dennis a very good instructor! I know it's not supposed to be training but I learned a lot from the video. He explains things very well. I always thought forecast icing was considered known but it makes sense now that forecast is throwing a dart at a dartboard in terms of accuracy
Great to see you back doing your IFR my checkride is scheduled the 27th 🙏
It’s gonna feel so great to nail that!
In the US at least, as far as the FAA is concerned, known icing basically means "you're getting ice right now." Once you start picking up ice, you're in known icing conditions and that's when the whole FIKI restriction comes in and it wouldn't be legal to continue.
A forecast is, indeed, not known icing. The FAA used to say that flying in visible moisture with subzero temperatures was known icing, but that grounded way too many people unnecessarily so they switched to the "it's only known when it starts happening" definition. Of course, legal vs. smart still applies, so use your best judgment.
I completely agree with Dennis about 5 hours of real IMC - that alone would make me choose him as an instructor, if I was in southern Ontario. Sort of close lol...
Smart move on home Sim Steve. It's a great tool for IFR practice. I recommend Xplane 11. Has Garmin 430 and 500 in base sim. I use the sim all the time to practice upcoming IFR flights. Things really slow down in the plane when you know what comes next. Big help when your ass is in the clouds and the nerves start creeping in.
If you're setting up a home simulator to train on the GNS430 I HIGHLY recommend using FSX with a Carenado or Alabeo aircraft that has the RealityXP GNS430 integrated. You will need to buy the aircraft and the RealityXP software, but it matches the ACTUAL GNS430 almost exactly, function for function, and will show in both 2D and 3D panel views. A2A Simulations makes a great Cherokee 180 that uses the GNS430 from RealityXP, and you can also get the Garmin GTN series as well.
Really appreciate this insight! And can you clarify, are you talking about software only 430 or is there a hardware interface option? I’d like to get used to the “buttonology” in terms of the knobs and so on.
@FlightChops FlightChops it’s software only, but all the knob and button options and functions are the same. I used it to practice when I did my instrument to practice loading procedures, flight plans and missed approach procedures. If your mouse has a wheel, that would be used to turn the inner and outer knobs. It is very close to operating the actual hardware. There aren’t really any good hardware options but if you’re really married to that idea there is an option for this rack/dock thing that you would take your actual Garmin 430 out of your aircraft and bring it home and slide it into the dock and you would use it with Garmins simulator software. This would NOT be used in conjunction with an actual desktop flight simulator program however, so you would not get the experience of actually operating the GNS 430 while visualizing your 8 pack panel to fly an actual approach. I really don’t recommend this option if you’re serious about simulating the procedured as well as the functions of the GNS. The buttonology on the GNS 430 is actually so simple you won’t really have to worry too much about differences between simulating it on your home computer and in an actual cockpit. The confusing part of the GNS 430 is really learning how to navigate the pages of interface, and that is about 95% accurate when using the RealityXP GNS430 software. You definitely will be well served, to use Microsoft flight simulator X and the Reality XP GNS. The reason why I specifically recommended a Carenado or Alabeo Aircraft, is that it seamlessly integrates the GNS 430 into the aircraft software. So it displays very naturally on your aircraft panel in the simulator. A2A Simulations makes the Cherokee 180 you would want if you want to keep it similar to your training aircraft, but a lot of the Carenado and Alabeo aircraft use it as well. The reality XP 430 does not come with the aircraft, it will have to be installed separately, but it’s very easy to set the aircraft up to use it. I’ve been using Microsoft flight simulator X since it was released, and especially used it at home when I went through my instrument rating to practice what I learned in flight school. You won’t regret using it. It will aid you not only in becoming very familiar with the GNS 430 itself, but it will allow you to actually practice flying the procedures with an aircraft on your desktop. ONE CAVEAT: I think it only uses a U.S. navigation database, so it may not work for Canadian approaches or basic point to point navigation. If you can get past that and practice approaches at US airports, the experience should translate seamlessly to Canadian airports and procedures. Links below...

Keep at it my friend! Glad to see Dennis back, he’s a quality instructor. Glad Hoover is better too!
Would love to see a video about home sim.
Hey, when you're flying the 430, be sure to have the discussion about not selecting "vectors to final" on an approach when you're cleared by vectors.
Glad your dog is doing Ok.
I like your instructor too. Seems like a very relaxed and knowledgeable guy.
Yes! The move I use is cursor on, big dial the waypoint, and direct direct enter. This activates the leg rather than direct enter enter, which goes direct to the waypoint. It's useful for cleared direct to a waypoint, but I find they vector you to intercept the course most times.
You had the same issue I had with "known icing" thankfully once you get your license you can ignore all that focus on the practical side.
You know you've got a good video when a former VFR pilot (myself of course, 23 yrs later) watches the entire episode and is chomping for the next. Well done!
Your heading didn’t budge while you were messing with the Garmin! Nice!
DG probably U/S.
Always find it weird that the engine instruments (especially the Tach, or the Manifold pressure in the twins) seemed to be an afterthought for piper. Shoved them in behind the yoke where you have to move your head to make a power change.
Awesome ending. True confessions.
Hey Chops, great video, starting my process on my night rating / IFR very soon out of CYKF, the ground briefing portion of this video is a good primer on what I can expect to be briefed on this weekend, gives me a leg up on prep.
Just passed my IR checkride on Wednesday. Let me know if you have any questions...or anyone else for that matter.
Thanks! and congrats!
It took me forever to learn what v/loc meant. Be sure to tell your peeps early if you have not already. Early and often. Thanks for you great videos. Love your ifr series
OK, that's too funny "we have a Vegetarian dog".
Nice one. Keep these coming - really useful. I'm doing my IR course starting 4 June - involves 20hrs sim, 25hrs flight training and the test. Cost - A$13900.00. Also doing the IREX ground school the week before ($880.00) followed by the theory test. Cheers.
Airplanes and sailboats, love them. I may have missed my calling, but, thus is life, live and learn..
I'm a broadcast engineer, who repairs tv stations. but I've always secretly had "want to be a pilot" on my list...
And I'm really enjoying your videos! I don't understand all of it, but, I love to learn!
I'm glad you passed your written IFR test, and glad hoover is doing better!
Great video! Love seeing this process. Keep them coming! Also give us a status on the Vans RV build are you doing it?
Check the Flightchops Instagram story today - literally just announced it :)
Yes on the sim videos
For sim, I have VR goggles with X-plane, and can't imagine ever going back to a 2D display. Highly recommend it.
I am a CFII and I want a lesson with Dennis. What a legend
Awesome flight brother. I am definitely interested in setting up the home sim to learn the 430.
Just took/passed my IR knowledge test a little over a week ago. Now I need to hammer through flight training. Thinking of doing an accelerated course due to a lack of instructors available at my airport.
fla or some other warm weather climate
Very interesting conversation with your IFR instructor. I’m not a pilot but a student of Aerodynamics and I respect the quantity of information and knowledge pilots need in this era of aviation.
and what era would that be?
I'd love to see you talk with your controller friend that you flew with in his Mooney about ATC now that you've got a larger knowledge base in IFR
*BLESS YOU for these videos!! and please make some about "SIM to real world IFR flying", as I'm hoping to get 5-10 hours on the SIM to reduce cost and make the actual lessons more stream lined hopefully!* :)
Your timing couldn't be better! Starting my IFR training now too
Awesome! Where are you doing it?
FlightChops ATP at KVGT. Taking written in couple weeks then going there the month of June after my school semester ends.
i am currently watching all your videos. Have always wanted to get my license and once this quarantine is over i'm going to get it over the summer!
Interesting to hear the conversation about icing. As for the home simulator stuff, I would definitely be interested in seeing how you tie that into the real training.
Hey Steve, pilottraining.ca do a standalone Garmin 430 training course with a simulator which you can download onto your laptop! Best of all, its like $20!
I'm still a pretty new PPL (out of CZBA too) so I used the course just to get a better handle on all the features of the 403, some parts were a bit challenging because its definitely an IFR focused course so it might be good if you are still working on getting comfortable with the 430.
Love these more technical deep dive videos man! Keep up the great work!
Feel free to share videos of you learning if you have the time. Sometimes that how I learn is by watching others learn so get to it! Thanks for the videos.
This brings back memories!
Can't wait to see what you come up with for Sim setup. I'm starting to get back into flying. Com/IFR pilot here.
Thank you for this and ALL your videos. VERY INFORMATIVE! And yes, please do the sim videos. I wish I could learn to enjoy sims. I think I’m going to have to wait for full VR experience and sim gauges and radio stack so I can just turn my head where I want to look and feel knobs when tuning a radio. I just can’t get used to keyboard views and clicking knobs. I really liked Pilotedge but I hate sims so much I gave up on that too. Wish I could get back into it.
Good luck in the training! I just completed instrument rating last week, 8 day's left on my 24 months or I'd have had to retake my written! My experience, I found the oral exam much more difficult than the flying! I was relaxed once we got passed the oral. Hard work but worth it!
Great to see Dennis back, if I’m eve in Ontario I’ll stop in for a refresher flight.
I’d like to see some SIM-related video.
Thanks for letting me know - seems lots of people would like to see the sim stuff applied
Fricking love these. These keep me motivated to get all my ratings needed.. thank you
I have an X-plane 11 sim set up. I recommend that you look at Pilotedge.net and RealSimGear. Pilot Edge lets you fly the sim talking to actual certified controllers. There is a series of test IFR scenarios you can fly with increasing difficulty. RealSimGear makes Garmin 430, 530, and 1000 external boxes with working knobs and buttons so you get more real experience.
Please make a video series about an IFR home sim setup. I'm in the same boat (starting Instrument training with a 430). I think that would be a very popular series! Also ... more Dennis!
Great video as always. I'd love to see home simulator videos. Remember that there's a garmin 430 desktop simulator if you want to practice just the gps usage.
Cheers!
Xplane 11! Pair it with pilot edge and you will be sharp as a pin.
Awesome yeah - that's the plan in terms of Pilot Edge - I am still deciding which sim software to go with
Great video. I’d love to see more like this.
Hell yeah, more Dennis! I need to find an instructor like him!
YEA!!!!!!!!!!
Been waiting for IFR continuation videos for a long time!
Just wished they weren’t “AFTER” I got my IFR Rating...
Better late than never, You’ll do GREAT!
Sorry about that :P. My journey has been a less than direct route :P
This is great content, love the content in the brief and would love to see how you use home sim in real flying as that is something I might be interested in doing. Awesome stuff, all the best Steve!!
Thanks Ben!
Can I make a suggestion? This is not a criticism, this is I see something and I want to alert you to it, to try to make things easier for you.
In watching your interaction with Dennis, both on the ground and in the air, it seems to me that you're looking for his approval in everything. "Can I do this, or should I do that?"
I really would like to see you switch that around to "I AM going to do this, and I Will do that." It really puts you in a position where everything comes down on your shoulders. It makes you the responsible one, just like you're going to be when you're sitting in the airplane with the Examiner, or with your family IMC.
I'm concerned that you are indecisive. It's not that you don't know the material, you do. It seems to me, from this video, the video with Osama and other stuff that you're almost afraid to make a decision because you'll be wrong, even if you would have been right.
I consider you a great guy, and if we actually ever met, I would consider you a friend. I don't want to see you get hurt.
I agree with Dennis that Instrument Training should require some actual IMC time, since you need to be able to experience what it feels like 'in the soup.'
I also am looking forward to seeing your home setup for a sim. I haven't been on a simulator program in years, but the last time I was there were aftermarket plug ins for the GNS 430W and 530W. I would assume now you could also find plug ins for the GTN series and the Avidyne IFD series as well. I would encourage you to learn both systems.
Feedback appreciated Gary. I will
Get there - but I am not there yet. This really is sort of a restart after being away from IFR for a couple years. But I am hitting it hard and consistently now, so I can make some good progress.
@@FlightChops Just like the Harvard, I know you will get this done, and it'll get done right. I just saw some stuff from a third person point of view, and I wanted to share that information with you.
You WILL do fine, and you'll get your instrument rating. Of that, I have no doubt. Again, this wasn't criticism, just something I see, and I want to help you in any way I can.
Good luck! Can't wait to see Part 2 and the continuing VLOGs on your Instrument training.
+1 I'd like to see the sim videos. I'm setting up a sim from scratch myself. Just built the PC yesterday.
Hi, flight chops! I'm 11 years old and want to be a pilot and you are an amazing influence! I really like that you go to the same Burlington airport that I went to do a flight where I was in the pilot seat! THANK YOU
Right on! Are you going to start training there? I wish I could have started at your age! Get after it!
Another vote for flight sim videos. Saw one comment your buddy was setting it up for you and had parts list. Would be interested in what’s recommended parts/pc memory/graphics card etc for SIM. I’m using Xplane but it seems a bit focused on gamers but it m sure there are some good tricks for IFR practice.
I really enjoy all the detail, very educational. Thank you
Great video, as always. Yes, I would like to see videos applying home sims to real world flying. Looking fwd to seeing more videos.
Your a Good Pilot and I haven't a Worry that you won't Pass you Written or your Practical portion
I set up a home sim for this purpose as well. I am using prepar3d plus a number of add-ins.
excellent - I might wanna pick your brain after I get back from Sun n Fun
@@FlightChops Glad to help however I can, it can be a bit of an investment.
I think the home videos with your sim is a good idea. I’m starting my IFR training next week and I have x-plane 11 at home to work on my IFR skills.
You always compose well and have great instructors. Vegan Dog was an ironic ending. Good laugh.
Yeah for home sims.
hahaha..... With everything else on your mind on a flight test, don't forgot to concern yourself with the tightness of your examiner's sphincter....It's funny cause it's true.
Great format, and really good stuff. Up for my renewal in a couple of weeks, so helps me get my head in the right place.
Keep these coming. And I'd love to see your HomeSim and how you utilize it.
Loved the ending. "...vegetarian dog!"
Your a great personality
a home sim video would be awesome!
Best FlightChops vid in a while!
Nice training flight. Nick Falcone CFII
Please compare it to the home sim, that would be really cool
yes to sim work!
Good video Steve. Hope you're coming to Sun N Fun this year. If you are, I look forward to meeting you.
yes - ForeFlight booth at 1pm on Friday, and possibly one other thing, but I am waiting to announce that - it will be cool if it happens :)
Yes I would love a video on applying home sims to real life. I have a wallet burner of a sim on Prepar3d with a handful of planes and such, always wondered how it compared to actual flying. Given the user has about as realistic as one can get for around $2,000, which is a reasonable budget for most people getting into simming.
Are you going to be flying on Pilotedge for IFR training? I think those would be interesting regardless.
That is the plan - yes!
Steve, I’m taking my PPL check ride on April 27th and I hope to start my instrument rating in June
As a sim user without a PPL, seeing how you apply sims to the real world would be really interesting!
Really good one Chops.
I've never seen such a white panel!! LOL. Would definitely help to use a flight simulation platform to learn procedure and theory to maximize prep for your lessons - I know it helped me immensely during my primary training, and I plan to continue for as many flights as possible. Would love to hear your thoughts on their Warrior...might be flying that some day soon!
