They needed a flash because we have an association with old timey cameras about how they work and this is visual story telling where evoling concepts and ideas through imagery is more important than realism
Open range and hostiles (this movie) easily the best westerns of time. Of course so many in between that COULD be argued but for me these two are remarkable and untouched. Will and have stood the test of time
Got to disagree. There are far more legendary westerns out there. Most notably the works of John Wayne and to a lesser extent, Clint Eastwood. These later movies are great but will always live in the shadows of the true legends.
Gotta start somewhere. Sometimes I'm surprised where I find actors. For example James Madio who starred in Band of Bothers, I happened to notice his face when watching Hook starring Robin Williams he was a boy in the film. Then ironically I think the first time I ever saw Michael Fassbender in any production was Band of Brothers, didn't notice him in the series until years after he became a success.
Anything that Scott Cooper and Christian Bale have collaborated together in, is cinematic gold, IMO. See also, Out of the Furnace, The Pale Blue Eye - great casts there as well. Very visceral films. All on my favorites (I'm a bit biased now).
Good to see Magua survived from being stabbed and then thrown off a cliff in The Last of the Mohicans so he could live another 150 years to still be an Indian in this movie lol.
I always interpreted it as, if the chief had taken the knife that was offered to him by the captain, that it would technically make the chief armed, and would give the captain an excuse to kill him
They needed a flash to obtain even exposure across the whole photo. To fill in shadowy areas such as under the brows, hats, etc. The emulsions on the film plate and printing paper were primitive and didn’t have the stable contrast properties to do that. Even today, lights are used outside to provide more even lighting. That’s the kind of thing that sets professional photographs apart from snapshots from your cell phone.
@@acidautopsy110 you say that like he's improved with time. He hasn't. His entire casting is because he's a prettyboy that drives women's engagement up. In other words his acting prowess didn't get him so far, it's more his looks and likely whatever connections his family has to the industry

That is correct with late 20th century photographic technology. However, at the time this scene is set, the film in use was much less light sensitive and did require more light for proper exposure. It was either the flash or a very long exposure time. That’s why I’m very old family portraits you might notice some subjects appear blurry while others do not. The burry ones didn’t remain motionless for what might have been a several second exposure time.

Really lame movie. New Army officers were all from West Point, and officers did not retire until age 65. The canvas cartridge belt wasn't adopted until long after this period. And on and on.
