      End cell closures and one line twist that cleared itself. End cell closures seem common for me. Good tug on the rears pops them open. If that’s all the mals I’ll have, I’m fine with that!

      Jason C Good! Me too I had some line twists & end cell closures. I also once had a pilot chute in my burble. Weird experience but it cleared itself when I looked over my shoulder. Only time I seriously considered to cut-away.

      On one of my final student jumps (#23) I couldn’t find my pvc handle after I was suppose to track at 4,500 and pull at 3,500 so I had to use the reserve 😂 now I make sure to always check my handles at least a dozen times before I exit the plane haha

      Toggle stow lock (on one side) , cleared it just before my decision altitude (took me about 1500' to clear).. No chops yet but that was the closest I have come (70 jump chump here)

    My ONLY (I hope I've not jinxed myself) malfunction was when I was a student on jump #5.
    BAG LOCK !!!
    I did my EPs and landed safely.
    BTW I still practice my EPs before EVERY jump.

    Obviously no one hopes to come across a malfunction, yet no one can promise it won’t happen. It’s always best to be informed and prepared! Great video Catherine.

    Just recently been getting into skydiving and I’m loving it!! Went for my first tandem a couple weeks ago and I fell in love!! Can’t wait to start the AFF course!! Keep making these videos I love them

    I wanted to try a skydive, but admit I wussed out, thereby making my decision altitude ground level!! Mad respect for anyone doing this, I mean you only get two chances, the main and then reserve, and thats providing your reserve doesnt get irreparably tangled with your main. I was surprised by how many variations of malfunctions there are. Will stick to watching people braver than I!!

    Jump #25 and the last thing I had to check off my A-license card :) Was on leave from Afghanistan visiting Hawaii, hadn’t jumped in 9 months, so it was also a recurrency jump.
    Jumped with an Instructor, everything went fine until I deployed… opened up with a Step-though! 😬 and at the time I had no idea what was going on, at first I thought it was just a Line-twist but at closer inspection lines were running in between each other… I was a very confused rookie haha.
    At 3000 (he had me open at 5000 for this jump) as I got closer to the shore I made the decision to chop it and see if I liked the color of the reserve better :)
    Reserve opened just fine and had an uneventful landing. On the ground the Instructor asked what went wrong… I described my malfunction to which they all were silent and exchanged looks 🤨.
    Later I heard them asking the Packers who packed my Rig… none of them knew? The Owner of the DZ got involved and was very upset with them. He dressed them down hard! Turns out they were teaching a student from Japan how to pack the day before, he had like 6 jumps. He packed it but they shut down due to wind and no one re-packed it and it was put back on the rack for some lucky Skydiver to jump the next day ;)
    But all’s well that ends well… I got my A-license, the DZ got a case of beer for my first Cut-away, the Rigger got a bottle of Whiskey for saving my life and the Owner got his gear back! The staff followed the main and free-bag down… they both missed the ocean to the south and the jungle to the north, they landed right smack in the middle of the road in front of their car :)

    I had a Line twist on my aff #2 and I couldn’t see my canopy since the twist was placed right behind my head.
    But I was able to release it quickly and landed safely.

    I just got into skydiving, my first tandem jump sold me on it... Loved it, now I'm watching every video I can of malfunctions and how to handle them before I take the classes. Thanks for the video, also I was told you have a 1 in every 25 jumps chance of a malfunction happening... Is that true?

      Minor ones maybe yes. Like line twists but usually we don't consider them malfunction but rather event to react to right after opening. ;)

      My first official AFF jump I had line twists, but my instructor prepared me for the incident and I felt comfortable untwisting the lines. After they were untwisted all went well! All thanks to the instructor’s training.

    My left toggle wouldn't unstow. I landed it by compensating using my right riser. should i have done emergency procedures?

    I'm just curious, I'm doing my solo course right now, why are they cutting away and pulling the reserve with one hand? My instructors are teaching me to to city away with both hands while looking at my reserve hand then pulling my reserve with two hands. Is that just a student thing?

    Good job my girl! I’m a pilot and only have few tandems in parachuting but I wanna ask you these question: when I started piloting my instructor switched the engine off to show me an aircraft still flyes and allows you to manage your emergency, because your wings are already out (unless they break but it’s totally unlike), not like a reserve which must come out or you’ll be in a serious mess! If a main canopy can fail why not a reserve? Is the reserve reliable like aircraft wings? Blue skies!

      Reserves are packed and inspected by a certified rigger every 180 days. The system they are packed is more time consuming but ultimately more reliable . The reserve parachute is also designed to open up faster ( in some cases would be uncomfortable depending on the speed of which the jumper is falling at but that’s good when your getting closer to earth). The main parachute if packed correctly is still very reliable but can be packed in a 10-15 min easily.

    im getting ready for aff.. idk how to fly i just know i need to arch chin up.. legs hands pay, attetion to instructor circle of awareness.. my question is do you guys ever look down? i actually like heights and want to look down but i feel like my instructor is going to be telling me to chin up over and over lmmfao... i guess if i have to chip up and learn then i will but thats a bummer for me lol. guess once i can fly im going to head down a bunch???? or can i look down at some point

    I have only had 1 malfunction on my 12th jump (I'm a newbie only about 30 jumps in total). I feel like I got kind of lucky with it though. But it was a line twist. Had 3 or 4 twists pretty easy to kick out of. But I'll tell you what for how new I was it was pretty nerve racking to notice the wind was coming from behind me. I looked up and saw the twists. Haha but Im glad for the experience with that malfunction. I feel 100% more confident then I used to. (At least with line twists). Haven't had to cut away yet and not really looking forward to it. Lol!

      Good job. Line twists occur more often and are more like problems unless they start making you spin hard. I once almost got stuck in line twists that was starting to block my head. I was still able to get out of that trap and started spinning the other way to get rid of them. Packing and body position are often the cause. It's sure that you are more prepared now. ;)

    Is it possible to have more than 1 reserve canopy? For the first jumps. Just got us, the people who really wanna skydive but their luck is in the trash

      Unfortunately no, but you really don't need another one. Your training prepares you to best react if something happens and 2 canopies is good enough. ;)

    I would love to Try it but just shit scared and I would probably bottle it when in the air lol.

    ya, I threw the pilot out too close to my body once, after leveling out and making sure my position was stable. The pilot got stuck in the free-fly rubber between the legs at 4000-3500 feet. I tried to fix it (mistake). after tumbling for a while, I cut the main at ~ 2300 and spent the remaining time trying to locate the reserve handle before it was too late and the AAD fired. I lost the license because of this mistake.

    Did you mean your main takes 500-1000 feet to open and your reserve takes 300 feet to open? What you said was your reserve should be open by 500 and your reserve should be open by 300 feet!!! That's too low for me! That is unclear language.

      So it takes 300 feet to deploy the reserve fully & the speed is actually tested

      She is saying that your main should be open at or above 500 feet and the reserve should be open at or above 300 feet.
