to recap: 1. soak parts overnight 2. remove and dry 3. wipe with wd40 4. polish with brasso 5. place back on drums thanks for your help, ive never done anything like this before.
Just did this exact method using the CLR and Lime Away (instead of the Works Rust, Lime and Calcium remover) exactly as prescribed here in a plastic utility box with hot water and covered with a lid for just 5hrs. Took lid off to inspect rusty vintage snare drum stand basket and legs and wing nuts etc and took a toothbrush to it and in about a 3 minutes all the rust was cleaned off, even from the rivets. Unbelievable! Old stand gleams like new now after rinsing and is now drying awaiting treatment with WD40, a wipedown and new rubber tips. Thanks so much!
Just tried this method and am very satisfied with the results. A word of caution however, my lugs were clean in a couple of hours, I'd be afraid to leave them in too long. Other parts needed to stay in overnight. Thanks for the tip.
For lugs and tension rods, all you ever need to clean chrome is 0000 steel wool and patience. I'll dump nuts and bolts into a tub of CLR, but I've never used anything else ever in the 25 years I've been playing on my chrome other than four ought steel wool. Works like a charm. I don't know why anyone wastes their time with all these solvents.
Same. People say it puts micro scratches in chrome, which leads to future pitting, but I've never experienced this. Do you use steel wool on shells too?
Me too Kyle. That stuff is nasty and costs money that I don't care to spend given I get amazing results with 0000 steel wool, Never Dull & chrome polish. It just takes time but the time spent playing drums and playing with drums is always something that I enjoy very much!
Hey, I've watched this video several times now over the past few months as I have an old kit that has been a restoration project for awhile. Now I'm finally getting going on it. My question - Will the CLR do anything at taking off paint? (Somebody painted this particular kit without taking the lugs off, so there is some nasty black spray paint on some of the lugs) or should I try to get the paint off with something else before submerging into the CLR to get rid of the rust and grime? Thanks.
Sorry to ask a dumb question - what is "Drum Hardware" ? Are all those bit s and pieces part of a car's brake drum assembly or are they all bits used on a musical instrument drum set ?
yeah, it will take the black finish off, but not completely, it will be a streaked green mess. don't use this method on the black finishing screws and plates
just wondering I have clr spray would it be a bad idea to spray it to remove tiny spots of rust or will it damage the kit? ive got a pearl vsx strata red wrap

Good luck, I'm sure your kit will look amazing! It is just time consuming, but the end results are worth it.

Thanks for posting the tutorial. Worked like a charm.
glad I could Help!

@@ludwigdrummer73 0000 steel wool is not going to damage your chrome. I would never use any steel wool on a shell unless it is COS.

@@ludwigdrummer73 chrome only
Great idea! Thanks
Wish you could’ve posted some before and after photos
So I just did this and it’s turned a lot of my lug casings to a cloudy splotchy grey color. Any ideas how to fix this or if I did something wrong ?
Thanks
How long did you leave the hardware soaking?
What did you use to shine all the parts ?

+Waylon Hadlock im not sure it will remove the paint.. you may want to try one piece in a cup and see if it will loosen the paint..

+VB Ed yes its drum hardware for a musical instrument. Lugs and such for a drum set ;)
May be kind of a dumb question but...as far as the works/CLR solution, would that be bad for gold hardware, or pretty much same deal?
never tried it on gold hardware before
Would this take off the black coating on black hardware? I don't want the coating to come off but I do want the rust off.
I wouldn't do this to painted hardware.

+stickydate07 i would disassemble the hardware. I'm not sure what CLR would do to the wrap. might do nothing but I wouldn't test it.
+Nx2overide no worries great video theres not many on youtube that out this much effort :)
stickydate07 Thanks, Also that spay will clean up rust on stands too CLR is awesome!
hmmmm i might just do the stands and tom parts that come off easy, they seem to be the only things getting rust anyway
i have a 70's slingerland . will this technique work on those lugs?
I've used CLRs on few70's/80's era Slingerland and Ludwig lug casings with no problems.
What do you use to polish it?
You can use any good metal polish, like Brasso, or ones found at a auto detail store.
so wd40 before or after brasso? thanks for the vid
WD40 after that brasso..to seal everything ;)
@@VarnHomestead thanks!!!!
Are those pearl lugs? If not what are they?
Yes these are pearl lugs
@@VarnHomestead do you know any exact specs? I have some that look identical and i wanna sell them. I wanna know how much they’re worth.
Jus that these are off a pearl export kit.
WD-40 works best ! Adding water to rusted parts is not a good idea.
