It's the midwest, never enough oven baked pizza, plus it was prolly more for metal's smokes and his buddies, narrator just tagged along cause why not
If its a Midwest town its about the metal guy saying the word beer.
It's merely bad story telling. The writer should have left the line about stopping at the gas station.

My home country :*laughs in aggressive ice storm*
Born and raised in Illinois, about 45 miles west of Chicago. Not overly isolated, but still out in the sticks. I'm very familiar with snowstorms of this magnitude. And when you're surrounded by wide open rolling hills and cornfields, it becomes a massive wind tunnel that creates monstrous drifts. My first experience with thundersnow was on a back road winding through aforementioned landscape. My dad had mentioned experiencing it once or twice up in the Wisconsin woods, but a secondhand explanation did not do it justice. Expecting nasty weather, I had dropped my gf off at work earlier that day so she didn't have to go it alone. At that time it was above average snowfall, but the roads were still clear. 6 hours later and it was much, much worse. Several feet had accumulated so I left with what I thought was ample time to get to her. Normally I would not have left to go anywhere, but I was not going to leave her stranded at work overnight. Good thing too, because none of her coworkers or supervisor stuck around to make sure her ride home actually arrived. I had some unpleasant words with said supervisor the next day, but I'm getting off topic. Anyway, the roads were damn near nonexistent and I was crawling. Mind you, I'm in a lifted GMC Yukon 2500 4x4 with what I thought were unnecessarily aggressive off-road tires. I was balls deep in a blizzard. 70+ mph gusts, heavy snow, damn near zero visibility. I'm a bit nervy, but keep a very slow and steady pace on what I thought was the centerline. Out of nowhere a massive blast of wind blows me sideways towards the roughly 5 ft deep ditch. I slide sideways right into it. The snow was up to my window and I was sure I wasn't going anywhere. I tried to rock back and forth on the gas a bit to see if it would budge, but no luck. Attempting to keep my cool, I call my dad to come bail me out in his even more obnoxiously masculine lifted Dodge Ram diesel. I knew he would not see this as an inconvenience as he is rather rednecky and lives for this shit. After sitting there for a few minutes the snow starts to swirl in vast circular columns around me. This is new. It's like being inside a tornado of snow and ice. Unnerving, but not enough for me to panic. Then the lightning starts. Quickly followed by deafening BOOMS of thunder. Ok mother nature, you have my attention. But this is not typical lightning and and thunder. The blinding flashes are green and blue. The thunder claps are right on top of me and I swear I could feel the electric discharge in my bones. My body was tingling and my hair was standing on end. There was a paranormal eeriness to it all. Somewhere between alien abduction and being hunted by a tundra stalking cryptid. My panic made the decision for me. I double checked 4WD was engaged, threw the gear shift to drive and slammed on the accelerator. To my surprise and utter relief I had underestimated this beast of an SUV I was piloting. The tail slid back and forth a few times before gaining purchase and we crawled out onto the road. I was moving again and out of the eye of that terrifying hellstorm. Obviously I did not encounter any monsters or snow demons, but it's still one of the most unsettling experiences of my life. Eventually rescued my lady and with my overly enthusiastic dad as an escort(I let him know I was out but there's no calling off that old sled dog once he's riled up), slogged back home. Needless to say, this story hit home. Damn nature, you scary..

I grew up in northern Illinois about 30 miles west of Chicago. In late winter in 1982, during spring break, we had very bad weather. On the first day of spring break, the sky turned deep purple, and snowflakes larger than silver dollars began falling. I was watching out the front window and I witnessed a lightning bolt and a single muffled crack of thunder. I had never seen anything like that before or since. That was back in the early 70s. We got about two feet of snow in as many hours. By the time spring break was over, the last of the snow was nearly gone.

A few years ago I was caught in a blizzard out in rural East Ayrshire, Scotland, and as I was struggling across the snow blanketed hills in absolute darkness, thunder and lightning kept crashing in the distance. Easily one of the strangest events I've witnessed.
I've been in 2 or 3 thundersnows and I think they're kinda neat actually. The thunder has a muffled sound to it because of all the snow in the air.

Sad that he is the first to die
I actually walked in a small blizzard once because I need to get supplies and we had nothing, our closet neighbor was about a mile away so you can imagine how hard it was, still one of the hardest things I've ever done but it was also fun, seeing a force of nature at work is just incredible to a degree, the worst part was honestly some random dog that showed up out of nowhere, it wasn't bad just barked and growled at me I took steps to keep from getting too close to what I assumed was it's territory, in the end despite some of the nonsense, I'm still glad I did the trip
This story gave me chills, it was so good! I live in southeast texas, so I have no idea what any of this feels like but damn the way the narrator described it...I feel like I do. This wasn't as scary or gory as other stories, but it reminded of The Thing and The Mist. It was perfect and sad. Great voice and great story, 10/10! 💞

When I lived in Northern Manitoba close to Churchill, we didn't get Thunder or lightning in snow storms or even rain storms in the summer, but we got huge thick Aura Borealis, which has a legend up there.
