I'm glad you are doing this, even though I watched and read the story, it feels like having a book club to listen to other peoples opinions of the book that enjoy it too.
It's pretty funny how cheerful and laid back Sylvester is in this volume not knowing that giving Myne that pendant is simultaneously the best and worst decision of his entire life. I wonder if he would do it again in hindsight.
Probably. For all his faults Sylvester clearly knows the state that Ehrenfest is in as a duchy (before the war it was near the bottom, a "backwards" duchy in the eyes of most others. Even with the civil war it ONLY went up to about the mid-range, & not through any actions of its own). I would argue that he's something of a futurist; he's typically very enthusiastic about the "new tech" Myne thinks up, whereas Ferdinand is more reserved. He might not understand Myne per se, but he does see how she can make the duchy prosper.
@@Harrison11106 Yeah, despite the absolute chaos Myne causes with seemingly every breath, she pushed Ehrenfest (and certain characters) in a much more prosperous directions.
Sylvester hold his promises above anything else even when backfireshe may try do some things different but if he remember he will do anything in his powers to keep the promises. he promised take care of myne for her family and ferdinand. like he promised to Florencia that he wold become Aub and have her children succeed him (this last one is one causes so much trouble that even Florencia becomed neutral in this).
@@filipeoliveiraladislau4533 " and have her children succeed him " And... that's NOT what he does, nor wants ;). What he wants is for Wildumb to succeed him, Wildumb and nobody else and, interestingly enough, Wildumb was Veronica's pick, the one raised by her as a pre-baptized child and the only one for which Veronica wrongly stood besides as if she was Ehrenfest's First Wife. Unknowingly to him, Sylvester never truly grew out of his submission to his mother ;).
I love the situation with Damuel and parucakes. It's a small thing, but makes for a nice laugh. He tries an amazing commoner treat that he only gets an excuse to eat them because he is the bodyguard of a commoner. However, paru can only be harvested over winter, and his demotion punishment is only for a year. Basically meaning he will never get an excuse to eat them again. He's even crestfallen when he realizes that if his punishment was for a little longer he could have the treat again.
I actually didn't guess who Sylvester was the first time reading P2V3... (spoilers hints?) he was obviously not "just" a blue priest, but my initial guess was the position of the "son" of what he actually is. He gave me the impression of the stereotypical wild "heir" of these kinds of stories. So I was legitimately surprised in P2V4 :D
I had a similar view. I wasn't sure he was *that* son, but I thought he was around the same rank and related at least. Just wasn't expecting someone like that to appear honestly
ferdinand is the only noble we see regularly the only other blue priests we see are the corrupt bishop and the guy who sperges out on the book room and leaves. Sylvester is weird but i expected that from all the nobles.
What I love about Bookworm is how it is presented as soft fantacy but has the depth and foundations of hard fantacy. almost every line hints at the bigger world beyond it. but it almost never info dumps on you. The only time i think they actually dump info on us is the king and queen and the eternal five, and of course they do because it pretty important to the way this world works.
I think the soft/hard fantasy is amazing honestly, because it's perspective. For commoners, magic and religion are both as nebulous and vague as can be really. They know what they strictly need to and no more. At times they don't even know that much. Whereas in noble society it's not /quite/ a hard magic system, it still has some leeway but it's definitely far more rigid and logical when you know. I love how it takes a good 2/3 years in world for us to really get much information. Gives plenty of time to learn more about what is necessary with hints for eagle eyed readers
" they do because it pretty important to the way this world works. " You should send a memo about that to pretty much the whole nobility of Bookworld ;).
Thanks for this.. with as much meat as the reading contains its nice to hear your “brief” recaps of anything i might have missed.. cant wait for the next one since its pivotal.
Thank you for continuing the series and not waiting for season three of the anime. I like the inventiveness of using the colored artwork for the characters we have yet to see in the anime or promotional material. As you mentioned how the importance of the religion does not mesh with how the temple is viewed it made me think of the biggest hint we got in Part 4 Volume 2. Though I am also interested in learning more it seems that knowledge is known to precious few so for it to be released organically in the story Myne will have to interact with a specific group, much to the anxiety of all those that look after her, or have a prologue, epilogue, and or side story from a character in that subset where it may come up in conversation or internal monologue.
I love the fact that I know when you say frediand investigates it means he lets (redacted for spoilers) off the leash and said person becomes everyone’s problem.
@12:00 its interesting how they basically took the suits myne knows from japan and turned them back into the suits from tarot cards. cups, swords, pentacles (the shield/circles) and wands/staves XD i wonder if the author did that on purpose when they doled out the divine instruments

Hey I'm caught up to basically all of the translated Bookworm content but I'm still really enjoying these videos! I hope you branch out from the light novel as a backdrop to the anime somewhat and cover the entire translated series on its own merit, as the relevance to the anime somewhat lessens past part 2 cuz it's gonna be so far away and some of us watching this care more for the books than the anime. Keep up the good work as this is some of the most robust analysis of Bookworm on the English speaking side of the fandom
Another great deep dive. I am happy to see the other comments sharing their love for the series. Totally agree on Rankings of Kings, my favorite anime this season. Bojji is the best.
I really like how they left peoples reaction to Sylvester but cut him saying what he was doing to the boarder. I think it helped anime only people to be more surprised like myne and assumably left room for other stuff.
I have a question: will you be covering all the Bookworm lights novel that are only physically out or will you also be discussing the digital release as well?
Great work... But I want the next volume even more! Because it got spoiled for me but I can't remember how or by who... So I know what's about to happen to Myne and really wanna hear your thoughts and see it animated (by you).
well I just finished Part 2 Vol 4 and had no idea this was the most current video of this series. I look forward to your next one so I can hear your thoughts!
Well Yurgenschmit years are longer than earth years (420 days) so by Earth standards she's actually 17.5 years old. Totally acceptable to call someone an adult then. So, in theory you can't get marry or... give flowers, until you come of age. But since nobles can't commit crimes against commoners they don't actually get in trouble for it. Wilma and Fran were both underage. If a noble is found out to have taken flowers from an underage girl he would be mocked and shunned, but no punishment would be given out. Like how Sylvester assured Myne that he had no need to seek flowers at the orphanage since he's more than capable of getting women in the Noble's Quarter. If they had to result to underage commoners their reputation would be destroyed. Any political opponents would mock them for it endlessly, saying that they can't get a real woman with their own merits. It's not for moral reasons, but at least in this world sleeping with a girl younger than 17 Earth years will get you in trouble.
When i first read this volume, before i saw how sylvester looked, I could only picture him as Richard Kind. I could hear sylvesters lines in his voice an imagining an animated richard kind doing the stuff sylvester was doing
Cant wait for you to cover up to Vol 4 Book 7, I just finished it. Any plans to cover the side stories in the Royal academy stories or the Friendship books?
I love these. I read the books but they're so slow I can't pay attention when I'm reading. I'm able to follow the story better the way you do these summaries.
Fun Fact: Damuel's name is a typo that the author liked and kept. So his name went from "God listens" in an old middle-eastern tongue, to "You will be thoroughly doomed" in leetspeek.
So does Shikza get to be a Med Noble upon his return to noble society despite his lack of mana? I feel like he shouldn't have higher status than Damuel just because of his family name. Doesn't he get docked for having been sent to the temple for most of his life.
He did. Your family rank seems to be more dependent on your family itself, than you personally, so that's why he kept his status despite being so long on mana. I believe TTW talked about it earlier in the videos that the family status is dependent on the family reaching a certain tier of mana consistently for several generations, so you can potentially have a few lowbies still be in the family so long as they're carried up more powerful ones, and it doesn't become a pattern, BUT generally that's a good reason to toss the kid to the temple to avoid the issue entirely.
Individuals don't get promoted or demoted. Only entire houses can get bumped up or down, but that's rare. Individuals can change status through marriage or adoption, methods of joining another family.
My guess is that because the religion is so old with one powerful governing body and little means for misinterpreted and false information to spread, no books among the majority of the population, the lore and teachings are able to remain consistent. Also helps that there is some grain of truth behind some of the lore since the holy items in the church exist.
I'm glad you are doing this, even though I watched and read the story, it feels like having a book club to listen to other peoples opinions of the book that enjoy it too.

That's the problem with fictional religions. They are so frequently unnaturally tidy. Each of the Five has exactly 12 flunkies? How likely is that?
My guess is that because the religion is so old with one powerful governing body and little means for misinterpreted and false information to spread, no books among the majority of the population, the lore and teachings are able to remain consistent.
Also helps that there is some grain of truth behind some of the lore since the holy items in the church exist.
It's also not true, as Geduldh doesn't have subordinates. But the King and Queen do, the god of concealment is subordinate to Darkness.
