    Flaps/slats retraction issue, aircraft turned around after dumping fuel and headed back to LGW
    Aircraft involved G-TUIC
    LGW-BGI
    Call sign TOM020
    The aircraft had the same issue the day before Wednesday 14th February
    Aircraft still in maintenance
    All passengers briefed by captain mid air, and all passengers flown out many hours later to Bridgetown.

    when i was a teenager our plane, britannia airways, which became TUI later had an engine fire just after takeoff. we headed back to luton airport and were met with fire engines going alongside our plane. we had to use the emergency slides and get as far away from the aircraft which was still on fire . it was midnight and cold. i remember the pilot coming into the room we were put into and promising he would take us on our ongoing flight out the next morning. which he did. a truly terrifying incident dealt with perfectly by the fire crew

    Very strange job being airport fire crew. Nothing to do for days/weeks on end, then you get called out just to make sure that a plane with no fire warnings showing is not on fire. We should all still be grateful for their presence.

      When we made an emergency landing at Bangor, Ma, after turning round 45 mins over the Atlantic on return from Canada with a hydraulic leak (on a DC-10;this was September 1979) fire trucks followed us down the runway.
      There may be no fire warnings, but it is a (standard?) precaution for emergency landings just in case.

      @@rezhaadriantanuharja3389 except with excel where [I've found] there are hundreds, if not thousands, of false positives from the error checking that there is so much noise any useful error checking would be missed.

      @@cigmorfil4101 In industries, the field that study this is alarm management. As you mentioned, when there are too many types of alarms, people tend to ignore them altogether because it becomes too confusing too quickly. Therefore, one goal of alarm management is to reduce the number of alarms / warnings such that only the truly crucial ones are left. Then whenever any of these crucial alarm / warning goes off, you have to treat it with utmost urgency, without exception.
      When a plane makes distress call or even decide to do emergency landing, it means one of these crucial alarms / warnings have been triggered. Hence the urgency and precautions taken, both by the air crew and emergency supports on the ground.
      Also, in your case, while there was no fire warnings, hydraulic leak could escalate to a crash, in which fire trucks are essentials

    My mom was on this plane when it had the emergency. All they were told was that it was a technical fault (suspected right engine apparently) and they'd have to land back at Gatwick.
    Tui were really good though, extremely apologetic and quickly got a new flight sorted out for then

    Back in the early 90's, I flew with Air2000 (those were the days), later to become Thompson, now TUI, in a Boeing 757 (I love the 757's), from Birmingham to Zakynthos, Greece. After take off I noticed that the plane had levelled off at 4000ft and, being a technical geek at that time, I knew that the initial level off altitude on take off was 6000ft. After noticing condensation forming on the ceiling of the cabin and water dripping down, after only about one minute, I turned to my mother sitting next to me, and it was her first ever flight, and told her that there was something wrong with the aircraft. Maybe that was not the best thing to say to a first time flyer.
    I mentioned the moisture in the cabin to a stewardess but she said it was normal. (Really?) A few minutes later, the pilot came over the PA and announced that, due to a minor technical error, we were going to need to land at Luton, but there was nothing to worry about, but due to the need to burn off fuel due to the max landing weight, we were to remain at 4000ft, remain at full engine power and deploy full flaps and speed brake, just to decrease the economical aerodynamics in flight.
    After a slightly worrying 30 mins, we landed at Luton in heavy rain, being chased down the runway by the fire dept, but all ended well. The only bad thing was that, considering the fault was only a computer tripping, that took about 15 minutes to correct , we had lost the time slot so had to sit there on the runway for over fours hours and, having already cleared Customs, so technically no longer in the UK, we had to just wait inside the aircraft.
    As it was, the circuit that tripped was in the air conditioning / environmental control side of things, but its back up system had also tripped at the same time. The pilots did say that we could have continued to Greece with manual control of the settings, but the plane would have been grounded in Greece anyway, so just easier to get the repair done in the UK.
    The technician who reset the computer actually stayed onboard for the flight, but he was slightly annoyed as the return flight was going to Manchester, so even further for him to get home.
    On returning home after a lovely two weeks in Greece, I wrote to Air200 complimenting their flight crew on how they handled the situation, even though there were a few passengers who thought we could just take off without needing ATC clearance.
    Even though it it now the best part of 30 years ago, I still have the response letter from the airline.

      @@mickeygamble1237 As it was with this flight, the lane flew at full power, flaps extended and under carriage down all the way to Luton, so burned up enough fuel to be able to land without the need to pump any.

      @@mickeygamble1237 Boeing 757's do not have a fuel dumping facility fitted, They just burned off fuel until reaching MLW(Maximum Landing Weight)

    Well done to the pilot and copilot for not ignoring signs and knowing when to abandon their trip and return for the safety of all. Who knows what would have happened if they’d carried on?

    Thankfully IC a is now back operating after a few days at LGW. It had gone tech the day before and had to return to LGW and that after a major overhaul. TUI would not risk anyone, so sensible precautions taken on both occasions

      Metal wings are the same. On the 747-400s they used to lift up almost immediately you leave the ground - apparently they rise about 12 feet at the wingtips.

      ​@@hb1338 no not really. They all flex, of course, otherwise the wings would be very brittle.
      But the composite 787 wings are especially known for their high levels of flex and the curve they adopt in flight comfortably exceeds any 747. Just go watch a few landings or take offs at a major international airport - the 787s' wing curve stand out.

    The flaps/slats were faulty, they would not fully retract as u can see they were stuck down when he stopped. The issue was repaired and back she goes.

    On the Saturday 18th February British Airways flight BA1481 (my inbound flight) had a medical emergency and emergency services and an ambulance were at the gate.

    It appears the 787 still had a big fuel load looking at the wings as it landed. Its a beautiful plane to fly in, and is 20% more efficient on fuel due to the amount of composite plastics used. Less guilt going on vacation.

    We've flown TUI to Barbados this time last year and this year both planes look in terrible condition with the wings covered in what looks like gaffer tape obviously isn't but doesn't give you confidence when both wings covered in the stuff and some of it curling up and peeling back. I wish I could post some pictures to show you guys

      Hi David.
      It's a known problem that is caused by the paint not adhering properly to the compsite structure. It does not affect the integrity
      or safety of the wing.
      The paint gaps are temporarily covered in speed tape.
      Boeing are working on an improved painting method.
      I agree though it looks bad.

      No lightning in the area, I live in the area and there was nothing on the day. Just seems to be a tech issue retracting flaps, so had to do a faster a landing than normal

      @@manofgreatbeauty Actually an aircraft that has had the same defect twice in two days will probably be given a pretty thorough check so it might well be one of the safest ones in the skies next week.
      According to Wikipedia Tui has thirteen 787-8s so the chances of ending up in that particular one is one in 13, assuming they restrict themselves to using only that specific type on that particular route. Don't worry if you consider 13 to be an unlucky number, just call it a 12 to 1 chance instead.

    Looked like a Dreamliner. Apparently these are state of the art in every way for making your flight pleasant. I’ve had 4 journeys on these and I don’t think they’re great.

      The flight crew would know about the problem from the log. There is even more reason to return to the airport if the same problem happens for the second time in two days.

    PANIC! EMERGENCY! PANIC! Guess the emergency, make some crap up and try and build a story. The reality is the fire services at airports have so little to do that they love to get involved whenever they can - even when nothing is wrong. For example, our gear would not retract. It was stuck down (three greens). But this closed the airport and generated a full “emergency” because our gear was down and locked. Ermm… just like a normal landing. Another example. With brake fires, they love evacuations because “You can never be too careful”. Well actually you can. And unnecessary evacuation is likely to injury many people yet a CAT 10 airport can pump so much foam such fires can be suppressed in seconds. I refused, they got pissed off. The fire subsided, nobody was hurt and nobody was going to be hurt. Wouldn’t it be far better for them to speak to the crews rather than make stuff up. Just so you know, when you get a problem on the ground you generally have three radios on the go. One on Ground or Tower, one on Fire (121.6) and possibly the third with your company.

      This plane had the same problem 2 days in a row, it’s hardly guess work when it’s the same problem it had the day before, and the aircraft was supposed to be fixed

      Wow. You surely can’t be a pilot and if so maybe the most unprofessional and clueless I’ve ever heard! All attendances are pre-determined and initiated by Tower. Fire respond as per regulations permit and if a safe and normal landing is made OIC will ask flight deck if they require any assistance by AFS and if not see you later. Always greeted by thanks and appreciation by these professionals. As for unnecessary evacuations, you are really showing your knowledge now. A pilot will initiate an evacuation and as if fire will ever do that for hot brakes. If requested they will carry out an undercarriage inspection with thermal image and give the ok to taxi to gate. Only if requested due to warnings in the cockpit
      Oh and by the way. Gatwick fire had “so little to do” that they attended around 230 emergency calls all over the airport last month.
