Sculpted Tongue Drum

- A while back a viewer commented that they wished I would make a musical instrument. I replied that I'm not a musician so while it would be really cool to, for example, make a guitar and be playing the guitar during the build video, I don't have the background in music to be able to make the instrument sound good. They responded that guitars aren't the only instrument and that I could find something to put my own spin on. I couldn't argue with that, and it got me thinking about tongue drums.
I was introduced to tongue drums through other makers' videos. It seemed like it was relatively straight forward from the music side of things but that the design of them was really simple and thus ripe for taking them in a new direction. When I look at most acoustic instruments I see an organic shape. The shape is probably the way that it is almost entirely because it needs to be that shape to produce the sound in the way that it does. But still these are instruments that have to be played by humans and the design has to fit the person playing it. Maybe it's just cultural, but when I see a guitar it has a shape that almost asks you to pick it up and play it. Tongue drums on the other hand, are generally just boxes.
So I got to thinking about what shape would a tongue drum be that told you it was meant to be picked up and fit the person playing it. The shape I came up with swoops down in the center which creates handles at either end. These handles also support the drum in your lap. This puts the top of the drum lower than a box with an equivalent volume, making it more comfortable to play.

We appreciate to see your hard works.
This is awesome. Your work is just stunning and this piece is awesome as a musical instrument or even just as a show piece. great work.
Just awesome work. And great job on the presentation no less. Great video, and fantastic craftsmanship.
That is beautiful and amazing! Sounds great!
Thanks, David. Parts of it sound good. Other parts not so much ;)
It is not just a musical instrument but a work of art at its best in woodcraft.
Amazing skill and art as always.
Holy freakin' dang, brethren!!! That's a beautiful piece! I've made quite a few steel tongue drums before, but nothing near that level of elegance. Just awesome!!!
Maybe like this machine will usefull for you ua-cam.com/video/rPc-ga_GMd8/v-deo.htmlm0s or ua-cam.com/video/2UX9w0mAdvY/v-deo.htmlm10s
Exquisite! And it sounds great, too.
Thanks, JOhn!
THAT was a lot of work. You've created something truly unique and beautiful.
Very creative presentation of the construction, I enjoyed the multiple views at one time!
Incredible video. Astonishing work, and a really creative edit.
Your videos are always interesting and have a unique style. This one was exceptional. Thanks
Thanks!
Really great edit! must have been very time consuming, but totally worth it!
I was watching completely amazed when you shared you’re sanding sigh at 9:43! Just made me laugh and appreciate you even more! Superb visualization and excellent realization of this project! Admittedly I’m lusting over your shop and tools, but you know how to use them proficiently. Bless you and thank you for sharing this project!
Beautiful instrument. Nice tools and shop, looks fun to make.
Incredible project!
watched your project and love it too!
Nice work Kevin! looks like it was alot of work to make' Thanks for sharing it with us.😎👍JP
Absolutely fantastic! I've never seen a more beautiful tongue drum. It sounds great too, very warm and mellow. I'd love to know more about shaping the tongues to get them in tune.
Wow man I cant find speech capable of doing justice, what this piece has made me feel. Thanks alot for the compassion you put into this work!
Absolutely beautiful
Wow! Beautiful!
So much work! Well done on a great result 😀
That is just beautiful! Really great considering you're not a musician. Loved the video with the drum sound!
Dude, that is beautiful.
Well done. 👍🎶😎
Absolutely beautiful instrument!
thank you for sharing your craft with us
Awesome! You just reminded me me why I never want to be a luthier, tuning those notes on the drum must have been just so much fun.
Thanks for sharing.
Once I figured out what I was doing it wasn't too bad, but there was a period there where I was totally confused and had to backtrack and do a bunch of testing.
Beautiful piece!
Absolutely incredible!
Wow! That is a beautiful drum!
a lot of effort into making this, dedication 💯
A great drum! Now you will have your own music in the video!
Beautiful work!
Very beautiful instrument and very beautiful video! :-)
Glückwunsch, ein Meisterwerk!
Your video owns a nice rhythm as well thanks for sharing
Trailing the individual mock ups to test the sound quality was some impressive commitment to getting this right, nice work, looks great to.
Perhaps I'll be able to bring version 4 to market ;)
Beautiful timbre and timber
Some craftsmanship!!!
Functional drum and great sound but mostly... a beautiful art piece... like all your creations!!! Love it!!!
Thanks!
Amazing labour of love 💕
Tas re loco man!!!! tsss te viajaste bien chido. Congratulaciones maestro
Wow, incredible work.
Excellent work!
Incredible!!
As always Kevin, an extremely creative and well executed project. I can't even imagine how long it took you to tune it correctly. Bravo!
After the week or so to figure out I had the top too thick and bars too long it went pretty quick ;) But the whole top really needs a better sanding job. I was a little horrified when the finish went on.
krtwood I think it looks amazing. The 'rougher' more organic look of the tongues contrasts so well with the smooth shiny body. The sound is great too. I was imagining this being played on the lap of a native tribesman, African? South American? I don't know. Still amazing.
Beautifull!!! the video is espectacular!!!! and great the wood work. a hug from Argentina
Thank you
Wonderful work, great hug from Brazil !
As a woodworker and a drummer, I appreciate the hell out of this!
Thanks!
That's amazing man!! That's the kind of tongue I'd love to have, great job!!!
thanks!
That's a work of art!
The most beautiful tongue drum I've ever seen.
Beautiful piece. That should be worth thousands, imho.
Now that is a beautiful thing!
I build mandolins but now I want to build a Tongue Drum! Nice touch using the music made on your instrument!
Thanks, Peter. There's a bit of a learning curve to it. I suggest starting with some single bars and experiment with the length and thickness with the wood species you want to use. If you get that right at the start then it's relatively straightforward to get it tuned. If it's wrong you end up chasing your tail. 1/2" thick and 6" long is where I ended up.
Nice work. 👍👍
Nicely done Kevin. Glad you finally got it to make notes. It is a beautiful design.
Thanks! Most of the bars make notes anyway ;)
Well there goes the "magic". We didn't need to know the whole truth!
Heh.. well I'm playing a scale at the beginning of the video but I play the G on the other side of the drum rather than keep going up the same side because the G on that side just makes a thud :(
Wow you have a lot of patience great job👍👍👍👍👍
Holy freaking cow. Great job
Freaking amazing!! Never knew what a Tongue Drum was, now I know. I made a guitar from scratch & after seeing your video, I think that I will stick to guitar making. Beautiful work.......... :)
Ha ha! If you do it the normal way and just make a box it's an easy weekend project, once you understand the tuning part.
Great, marvelous, spectacular, stunning, is there any other word please?
Wow, just wow!
Excellent...!!
Cheers...
That was impressive, I would love to see a follow up video of your drum being played by a trained musician, not that your groove wasn't pleasant, but I bet would sound incredible being pushed as an instrument. I'm curious why you made it initially? It's really beautiful; aesthetically, ergonomically (the way it would sit in the lap), and tonally. Thanks for bringing us along.
That is outstanding, absolutely beautiful, great work :) I want one!
Nice work. Now I have to make one.
Amazing work!! I to have made some tongue drums out of wood but i'm having trouble tuning them since i'm not musically inclined but if you have any tuning apps or suggestions that would be awesome .
Cheers
Stunning
Beautifull!
I enjoyed the varnish the most
Отличная работа! Очень классно!!!
wonderfull stuff.
Very cool!
Stunning work! What is the dark wood you’re using here?
Superb sir
WOW!...just WOW!
absolutly genial !!!
Beautiful work of art - both in musical and visual context. Let me know if you ever decide to sell it...
Thanks. Whether I'm willing to sell depends on the offer :)
Excelente!!!
Being a woodworker and musician for 40 plus years, I am blown away your creativity. Do you mind if I ask how many hours you had into creating this masterpiece? Not to mention the hours of dreaming this up in your head.... Fantastic video to say the least.
Neat project and fab video mate ,I have a lot to learn about that .atb Darren
I raise my hat for creativity
Are there any more of these available
Love it.
Its a masterpiece, its a god damn masterpiece.

Thanks!
What an interesting organic shape. When you bent the back cover, do you need to wait a few days before you can put finish on it? I was also wondering if the finish changes the sound at all.
Thanks again!
It actually took a couple days before it would even seat all the way down in the center because of the expansion from the water. Luckily I used epoxy and epoxy will stick to already cured epoxy so I was able to just wait it out and then pour more epoxy in from the inside to glue it down in the center. I would imagine the finish has some effect on the sound but I don't have a trained ear to hear it.
I can't begin to imagine the frustration level that tuning it produced. This looked to be a long, tedious (at times) project. But I can say that really rock this tongue drum!
Tuning wasn't so bad once I figured out that I had the top too thick and the bars too long. But it took a week to figure that out...
But... Ohhhhh.... that week!
Brilliant
another level
A labor of love
Impressive work!
The drilling and filling with epoxy...was that correcting a pitch where too much material had been carved away / making the tongue stiffer?
It was a bad glue joint. I cut the tongue shorter to raise the pitch with a jig saw and the vibration broke the weak joint. So I drilled through and let the epoxy seep out to repair that and plugged the holes.
