Black hammer is great series To me it a love letter to superhero from some that grow up with them. And finding way to still be fresh and unique in it own right.
This was a really great video and perfectly timed too as I’ve been considering this for many books. Would love to keep seeing these kind of thoughtful vids for the comic collector.
Hey, great idea for a video! As for upgrading there are three things to consider in my opinion. 1. Art 2.Sentimental value and 3.accessibility! Let me explain. 1. Planetary has really great art and an oversized edition is a must. On the contrary Y the last man is not that great art wise and I wouldn't upgrade 2. I have the ten volumes of The Sandman in tpb and it was my favourite comic for years, I read them many times and changing format seems weird. 3. As for accessibility, Omnibi are difficult to read, heavy and I even find myself hesitant to open them again and again for fear of tearing them. My take? Deluxe oversized editions are the perfect format like Fables deluxe etc. Easy to open, read and randomly browse straight from the shelf.
Great topic! Love your videos and really appreciate you sharing your thoughts. I find myself constantly upgrading/downgrading my collection so it was great to see what others do.
One of my main criteria for upgrading from floppies to collected editions concerns covers being reprinted before each 'chapter' or included in a gallery in the back, then I look for intros and afterwords, intro pages from floppies (most Deadpool mini floppies, so I plan to custom bind them) but I like that the Gwenpool & Hellcat! trades have the intro pages and to a lesser extent letter pages (like the Squirrel Girl TPBs) I'll probably get the Hush Omni (which I'll break up into two custom bound volumes) but I'll keep my Hush Absolute, like I kept my Absolute Ronin after getting the newer 'Deluxe Edition'.
I'm thinking of buying the Black Hammer LE but I'm in UK and AmazonUK says it has 220-ish pages and publishers website says it has over 400 pages??? Is there two different editions??
Great video Jess! But you are hurting my wallet!! haha. I just came to terms with not upgrading Black Hammer or Hellboy but you're making me second guess my choices...I have some thinking to do.
Hi Jess, I prefer Absolute>OHC(Dlx or Library)>Omnibus>HC>Trade paperbacks. For the books I love. So we are on the same page. Love your recommendation👍🏼
I upgraded to the Absolute Y The Last Man because I freaking hate the tight glued bindings of the Vertigo Deluxe Editions Hardcover. Same goes for Daytripper where I will do the same. It‘s a shame that DC/Vertigo does not put more effort in the quality of their oversized hardcovers concerning the binding (same goes for the Deluxe Editions of 100 Bullets, Sweet Tooth, DMZ and so on)
Love to hear your reasoning on upgrading/downgrading. I've never been that strong of a collector where I HAVE to buy every Omnibus/Absolute out there as they come out. Having said that I do have a section now in my library where I have TPB/HC editions of stories that are now collected in Omni's that I will need to unload/trade to whomever would be interested at some point. I did upgrade my two Hush TPs to the 15th Anniversary Deluxe HC edition that came out in 2017. However, I didn't find it necessary to upgrade again to the Absolute edition. It does have the Jim Lee annotations and sketches at the end of it. Also, I have had the six TPBs of Moore's Swamp Thing for some years now but do believe I will upgrade on that one when the first Absolute volume comes out (was originally supposed to come out last fall). Hopefully they don't move the date on that one again. I already have two other Absolutes from Moore (Watchmen & Vendetta) but thought it was silly to upgrade my Killing Joke HC to the Absolute edition that came out recently for such minimal content.
I'm such an Omni-kitten XD The Hellboy universe is my favorite comic series. Ever. I almost have every single issue, recently bought the Hellboy Omnis, and will at a later date collect the Library Editions. For series I love I will double, triple, dip whenever possible. That and Black Hammer.
I'd love to get an oversize Swamp Thing (it's way cheaper and safer than buying an oversize Man-Thing), but will wait to see what the recoloring looks like before ordering. No computer gradients and lens flares, aka Abrams-ized. Hell, I'd gladly pay for an Artist Edition for some choice Bissette-Totleben-Veitch pages.
wonderful video! very informative! If you have time you could do some type of cost association with the books, like 3 hardcovers cost $75 but 1 omnibus costs like 50$ or something. might add another layer of convincing especially when budgeting. it might be a bit of work or unnecessary but just a thought!
In one of your collection videos, I saw the alcoholic by Jonathan Ames. Would you recommend it to someone who has read one of his novels and liked it plus bored to death is a favorite show?
I haven't read any of his novels but I liked The Alcoholic a lot. I'm in recovery and it struck a lot of true notes and was insightful without being preachy.
Great vid Jess, thank you so much! I have to keep my planetary absolutes, because they match my authority absolutes... but now that omnibus looks tempting! What extra stories does it have? Is it just that funny batman crossover?
I find the primary reasons to “downgrade” are simply cost, availability, and space on your bookshelf. One example would be the Batman Omni by Loeb/Sale compared to the three absolute editions (one of which has reached whale status). Secondary reasons would include quality of the pages (glossy vs matte) and consistency with dust jackets and covers (i.e. the DC logo). First world problems, FOR SURE... 🤓
Great video Jess! Would you consider Grant Morrison's Animal Man 30th anniversary edition a good buy? Also, I have heard you praising a lot for Planetary Omnibus ..is it a stand alone or you need to read few books more to understand both - Animal man & Planetary? Thank you.. Peace and love..
Morrison’s Animal Man is one of the best books I’ve ever read! And Planetary is another personal favorite! The Authority is also by Ellis so I’d read that before Planetary only so you can familiarize yourself with his concepts. Both Planetary and Authority are stand-alone but they do slightly cross over at one point and i think it’s in both omni’s. Animal Man is stand-alone also
@@OmnidogsVault ty for that clarification..Animal Man is what I would read than..Also, I recently read Shade : the changing girl ..& I liked it as it had the art from the team of Izombie..which is my 1st ever omni..and came across "Doom Patrol" any idea what is Doom Patrol all bout! I mean where to start ? The Young animal..or Grant Morrison's run? Is that a stand alone too?
@@amy99077 I think Doom Patrol by Morrison is not a good place to start, it's pretty complex with a lot of stuff that can be complicated if you're not familiar with the early concept/ideas of early (Silver Age) Doom Patrol. And Young Animal is an homage to the Morrison run, only crazier and less cohesive and coherent(in my opinion). They're both stand alone's but try reading Silver Age Doom Patrol digitally to see if you like the concept of it first
@@OmnidogsVault that's some great advice..will try to read it digitally in that case and will share my opinion..ty Jeff ..was waiting for the reply as I wasn't sure about this series..Does it go same for The invisibles or The filth too? I have read We3 and Happy! from him and really liked it..
Great video I’m been debating on some grades for trades. I generally like OHC the best as they are perfect for casual reading. That being said I do like omnis if they had an entire run or if I truly want large art or a very favourite story I will spring for the Absolute. I really enjoyed your take on not upgrading if the original collected edition you have was a bit of a hunt to find. I have a few MMW I’ve kept over the omni’s simply due to how hard they were to come by. Also I have a slightly off topic question. Do you have the Brave and the Bold Bronze age Omnis? If so what does volume 1 collect? I have volume 2 starting at 110. But did vol. 1 leave off at 109? There isn’t anything concert on the internet about what it covers.
So I should stick with the Deluxe versions of Y:The Last Man? The ones you showed in the video? And is The Ex Machina you showed everything I'd need? Does that cover the whole series or are there more books?
Y the Last Man has fabulous art?! Urgh. I'll wait for a Swamp Thing omnibus. I upgraded from tpb for Black Hammer, Planetary and Ex Machina. I upgraded from singles to Absolute for Hush but will not downgrade. I didn't upgrade tpb Hellboy, Y the Last Man, Preacher, Lady Mechanica. I rightly didn't even start with Monstress as I knew OHC will come out. Art is the main consideration for uprades in page size. Story is the main consideration for upgrades in book thickness.
Im having trouble justifying buying a absolute edition book because of the amount of story in one and just cant find one that has my attention and im an omnibus guy so I always end up just buying an omnibus as my collected format of choice. Though I might get the swamp thing absolute because I've never read that story.
@@OmnidogsVault thanks for the reply jess! Love the channel and all that matters is that people are reading comic and growing the community. Keep on rockin! 🎸📖
Y the last man is one of my favorite comics but the art is not good enough to justify an absolute format IMO. On a side note, don't upgrade your sweater. It looks great
hmmmm, I would say you're probably going to be happy with either format. Absolute Hush, you get a great story with great art. Omnibus, you get a more complete experience with great art. Either way, you should read Hush though!
Black hammer is great series
To me it a love letter to superhero from some that grow up with them. And finding way to still be fresh and unique in it own right.
For sure planning on buying the Black Hammer hardcover. Been holding off on it for too long

Only reason I didn't upgrade swamp thing is the recoloring doesn't have as much of a "horror" feel. Got the new box set and will bind them.
Whoa! That Black Hammer library edition looks fantastic. The Missus will love to hear I need to buy another book! Thanks for the tip!
Hahaha I'm in the exact position you're in with Hush, also my first absolute and have grown attached 😂 I am on the fence now with the omnibus. ✌️&❤️
