As an owner of a Surface Pro, I can tell you that if you touch the windows logo with your finger on the Surface device itself, it also takes you to the start menu similarly to the home button on the iPad (I assume it's the same on the Surface RT).
You could get a basic stylus for the RT, however the Pro comes with a dedicated stylus and a slot to store it in, and a digital ink layer within the screen. This means you'll be able to draw more accurately on the Pro with the screen sensing pressure and which end of the pen you're using (one end to draw with and the other for the eraser for example), whereas a stylus on the RT would just be a recognised as a finger. You could still use the RT and stylus to take notes, though.
I get your point about value and elegance of not needing to tote around a keyboard in a bag. Since I don't use the iPad for much more than communicating and for consuming enterntainment 90% of the time, I don't really want or miss a keyboard. The few apps that I use to create don't need keyboards either (ireallb, garageband)
One thign left out of the Keyboard coment it that when flipping it back with kickstand open, the KBD shuts off, which allows using it on a bed, couch, lap, and if flipped all the way back, shuts off and allows freely mobile usage out in the field to take your notes, etc.
There are two little tabs on the bottom of the kick stand so you don't need to use the notch on the left. Not sure how people aren't noticing them. The magnetic keyboard almost always attaches the first time, not sure why the comments to the contrary. The power connector magnets, however, sometimes need to get adjusted to sit correctly. The preview Office suite does not have VB, so no macros. Hard to say if the full version will update this. Integrated with my Windows 8 desktop flawlessly.
You can use it on your lap. You cannot run full-on programs on Windows RT but you will be able to run programs on the slate version with Windows 8 that will release soon with an i5 processor.
Not on the version out right now. In January, the Surface Pro will be released, which will be the full Windows 8 experience, allowing you to install any program designed for Windows on the desktop and in the "metro" view. The Surface RT (the one out right now) can only install apps from the Windows 8 app store.
To the complaints about using the stand on a lap or any non-level surface, with the touch cover you can flip it back half way and then have the stand resting on THAT rather than your lap, have you tried that? That should be much more stable as it now has a level surface and much more surface area.
I'm buying a Surface in January but I'd just like to clear up the issue on the 32Gb version of the Surface RT. The total internal storage is 32Gb, but with the OS and pre-installed software, it kicks down to just around 16Gb.
My exact situation. I haven't actually opened the Surface I was gifted by my employer, but I'm thinking about keeping it (rather than selling it and perhaps buying a Nexus 7) and getting a Touch Cover and using it for notes during lectures etc.
I originally owned the Surface Pro because I figured the RT was an underpowered version. But after the recent price drop, I gave Surface RT a try. I absolutely love it!
I agree with you and fully expect to see better and better toys in the future. One thing I've always had a problem with and always will is voice-activated commands. I don't want to talk to a computer - ever. If we are going to move beyond mice, trackpads, keyboards, and touchscreens, it has to be a 'silent' way of manipulating the computer. Thought control? Vision control?
and i totally did not mean it to be written like that, it was a reference to "will it blend", you could see it as a joke or so. considering the internet explorer icon in the bottom left when he has the normal desktop showing
Yes, but on the Pro version (Out next month) you can install any software that you can install on a regular PC, including Photoshop, AutoCAD, Project, Visio, etc. The Pro version has the full Windows Operating system. It includes a pen so you can write and perform graphics functions, ie Photoshop.
I had tried the touch cover one and be truly impressed by how easy it works out for me. I ordered the Surface and the blue touch cover after trying it out at Staples. I think I've found the one that can sort of replacing a laptop for me (at least). It'll serve me well with school works and entertainment at the same time. Easy to carry around also. That's a win-win for me :)) I was going to wait for the 8 Pro version one, but when I heard the price, whew, RT is good enough for me~
If you're searching a laptop replacement, or need to use desktop programes on your tablet , try the pro version of surface witch is going to be released in spring 2013...
The Pro is great. The only issue I'm aware of is the battery life which seems to be pretty short. I'm lookin' forward to hearing from you about your experience. January...we are almost there!
I don't know much about the iPad. I had the chance to use it a couple of times and had fun. I never had the chance to really get into it though. Some friends have it and are very happy with it. I used to have an iPod touch and I think it was a great device. I just wanted something different and I have to admit I was fascinated by W8. I made a lot of researches and had to go thru a lot of crap but I found some good reviews. The Surface was giving me what I was looking for and I got it.
Laggy UI when switching between apps is going to affect the user experience. I mean if you've never used a tablet before or you're used to the occasional glitches of Android devices, then it may never even cross your mind. But if you're coming from an iPad, it'll definitely be noticeable, as shown in this video.
yes you can transfer photos, videos and files but you cant run full desktop application and it has full adobe flash player so you can watch putlocker and sockshare or stream videos.
This review is much better than the verge's , not only is it unbiased but clearly the reviewer understands that its a different type of product that cannot be compared to most media consumption tablets.
It doesn't appear to me that most comments are about the iPad. But when someone does mention it then usually it launches a long discussion so it might appear as if every comments on the iPad when you start reading such a discussion. However the iPad is marketleader. When the iPad picked up steam it was often said how much better of a computer experience it was then desktop/Windows. It makes sense to put things in perspective like that for those unfamiliar with a new product.
I pre-ordered one of these not because its gonna beat (insert tablet name here), but because i like the design, keyboard and ports. Apps will come, when, dunno, it will take time but im ok with that.
no, you can only install programs available on the microsoft marketplace. However, when the microsoft surface pro is released, that has full windows 8 pro, which can install 3rd party programs.
The RT version will only be able to install programs from the windows store but the PRO version will be able to install all the programs you like. Like on a normal pc.
It's funny that @7:12 while she is saying that it is very responsive it is actually being completely unresponsive. Followed immediately by massive lag while switching apps.
To me, the keyboard is one of the features that stands out to me. I'd find it very useful. Tablets are light and portable, even compared to an ultrabook. I have a tablet that I bring to school instead of a laptop (which is a lot heavier). It's definitely a lot easier to use a keyboard than typing with touch. That keyboard is probably really light and convenient. And it acts as a cover too. Light keyboard + Tablet > Heavier/Bigger Laptop. But that's just my opinion.
Just to give an update on the whole display and the optical bonding. Apple's new ipad (although is way too soon) has 1 layer for touch screen and glass.
I got mine this morning. My ONLY issue is almost every website i use day to day it busted in IE10. Lets hope they get it fixed. Almost nothing with flash works in either the desktop or modern UI version.
windows rt uses the store software wile surface pro can download from the web. However, you can install Data on the USB and run it through it and it will work fine
Yes, your'e correct, however the Apple KBD costs extra of course more than the MS one, and then you're toting around a keyboard in a bag, plus a cover. Not smart. The KBD cover from MS is also optional, for the Surface includes three different on screen keyboard layouts also. But if you're going to have a cover, have one that has a purpose, not just a magnet.
This has been on my radar for awhile and I have one preordered (though it hasn't arrived yet for some reason) The only thing that I'm disappointed about is the proprietary power adapter thats as big as a brick.
It does have a USB port. I don't know what Steam is but I know for sure that it doesn't support Spotify. You can't install any software on the Surface RT. To quote you "it only runs applications from whatever virtual store is available". As far as I know you should be able to do that on the PRO version but that's definitely more expensive.
It runs Office because it has been specifically ported to Windows RT. You'll find Word, Excel, Power Point and OneNote. Yes it is definitely comparable to an iPad or an Android tablet in terms of restrictions using software.
Well, it's a TABLET. Like the iPad, nexus, GalaxyTab, and so on. You can use it on your lap, as you could any other tablet. When the Pro comes out, you will be able to run programs on that.
Thanks for the review of the tablet. This looks quite difficult and easy at the same time. Very simply all I want to really do is just do my job using a tablet. There seems to be a lot of terminology and things Ireally don't understand. Perhaps I need to get more up-to-date on what's happening with these type of new tablet by Microsoft. Thank you for your video anyway I can tell that you very very professional. Very knowledgeable to
Besides a revolutionary and extremely intuitive interface, the office package, a constantly growing applications store, a USB port, the ability to run two apps at the same time, a very high quality hardware, great screen definition and long battery life, you're right it offers little to nothing.
Yes the Pro version coming out early next year will have FULL Windows 8 Pro installed and be fully Windows with no limitations. I am waiting for that...and I think so are many others, because that Surface tablet is just dead sexy.
It has windows RT. The only desktop applications it can run are microsoft office, paint, and IE. The pro version of this tablet that's supposed to come out in January has full windows 8 though.
Hi, I'm ucnlear what you are referring to when you say "checkouts". One thing that's important is Win phone7 was the last of WinCE. Winphone8 is now the same kernel as Win8,, and Xbox. Hence the continuity ability of apps written for 1 will work on all devices. Unfortunately Winphone7 users go screwed... but it was bound to happen at some point. MACS had that issue when they migrated to intel chips. Still phones, ipad apps wont work on MAC OSX, I expect that to change at some time in the future.
USB, micro SD, mini HDMI, excellent browser, promising keyboard/protection, ...: my tablet prayers have been fulfilled! (I have an ipad and im just frustrated that i can never plug in or link anything to it, nor run two programmes at one time)
Great points. I see iPADS in retail situations as ways customers pay for stuff at food fairs, etc. I'd like to add that all the competition we see now will only allow us, the end users with better toys to use in the future.
Usability is not my issue, it is the fact that I thought Microsoft omitted it from RT. I do have Windows 8 PRO on an Acer tablet, and using desktop there is fine even without a keyboard.
Call of duty only runs on the Pro version, as of this time. As for Skype, there is a windows store app for it. (it might actually be built in, I don't know) So that probably means the camera can be a webcam. The camera on the RT is sadly only 1 megapixel, but the Pro will probably be better. I hope that answers your questions.
Ah gotchya, thanks! Yes I'm familiar with what youre talking about now. I think those are still in use in some companies, Apple I think uses something similar in their store, and Microsoft uses som sort of tablet style device in theirs. I have a CC swiper plugin thingy for my phone. They're all pretty slick. Have a good day!
I know, right? The iPod touch (this is 4th gen) is soo thin that it's incredibly awkward to hold, It has absolutely no feel, its like I lost the thing in the palm of my hand.
You can, the Surface Pro is like an Ultrabook and I think it will be sufficient for the small gaming needs you will get at university. Pro: Notebook tablet RT: Pure Tablet
there are more and more apps with time... I has just started, so there are few compared to others, but by the way it is going, I think it will have a vast app selection.
While I enjoy a post supporting this device. Windows RT is not a normal windows OS it is in fact a stripped down mobile OS. Though it may be a lot more of an OS than IOS it still is a mobile OS
Does windows 8 wakes up instantaneously from sleep like the ipad? Does the file manager works exactly like desktop version ie you can just stick your thumb drive and access files directly?
So many commenters here blurting random crap about RT, it goes to show that the messaging for what RT and Pro are hasn't worked. RT is meant to be similar to iPad but have a basic productivity focus, whilst Pro does the whole Windows 8 business. I'm getting a Surface RT tomorrow for college/Uni work/entertainment and have a powerful Win 8 desktop for work and gaming, and a laptop with Win 7 that sits in between
Yes it has a Desktop, as you can see on the Video. But it runs on a ARM Chip, so you cannot install x86 Software on it - that's the deal with the "RT".
This looks beautiful. I have a Nexus 7 and I feel like this is definitely the next step in the tablet market and I'm not even a fan of Microsoft aside from their Windows OS platform. I hope it does well and I will probably purchase the Windows 8 model once its cheaper next year or the year after. Heck with the way things are going, I'm using my laptop (which is essentially my desktop) less and less due to my Nexus 7 and my HTC One S. Oh how far technology has come.
Well the Apple iPad does something similar. It is not a full Mac in any way, but is able to run a number of apps, and is quite popular. The Surface (with RT) will not be a full PC, yet will still have functionality. Especially as the Windows Store expands, more and more apps will increase usability. And we also see that Microsoft is going further than Apple with the Pro version of the Surface. This will give you much more functionality than an iPad can. Apple may actually have to innovate again.
Oh. That sucks. :| What drew me to this was the familiar interface, the simplicity and especially the keyboard/kickstand. The software looks great and it's definitely durable which is a plus. But if it's going to have next to no programs, I'm not sure I want it. Are there other tablets out there with attachable keyboards like this one?
I really like the keyboard. I have Google doc on my iPad and I have hard time typing more than one or two words on the screen. Its the lack of a keyboard that keeps me buying convertible laptops, instead of tables.
I don't see many people jumping onto the Windows RT version of the Surface simply because it doesn't allow you to run full Windows programs like W8 does. Its just a shame that the Windows 8 version is going to be even more expensive :-S.
You talked about certain apps and programs not working. So, does that mean it won't run stuff like Powerpoint and stuff? So, is its functioning more like an iPad or other tablet where you're much more constricted as to what programs you can run? Or does it run most programs? Trying to decide between this or Samsung ATIV, since they're both similar... Also, is the keyboard complete touchscreen? Or is it like a jelly keyboard, where you can atleast feel the keys better?
Magnesium is much lighter than aluminium, and feels much sturdier. Though, cutting magnesium is tricky and expensive, so it might've added some cost over an aluminium case.
But that's months off, with a heftier price tag. I'm not exactly aiming for processing power, I just need enough to be productive, which the other manufacturers already have options.
Actually, with the Windows Interface, the memory is about the same as a 16GB iPad. Also with Windows, you're more susceptible to viruses, and you'll have to perform windows update. It's also schedule for a price drop after sales weren't as expected. In the end, it's your preference.
I think this is overall better than the Surface Pro (for me) because I already have a laptop for other needs. The only thing I'd need the Surface for is using Word, Excel, and Powerpoint for school purposes, along with the Xbox app to go along with my Xbox. I don't really need to play Minecraft on it really. If it can even do that on Pro version in the first place... I'm not looking for an actual computer here...
It doesn't have full Windows in it. It has Windows RT, which runs on ARM and thus can't run any of the apps you can run in Windows 7. The Intel compatible surface comes out later and that's what comes with the complete Windows 8.
We have to leave that to Apple that at least when they announce any release, there's a date and you're sur you'll be able to buy it at that moment (okay maybe you'll wait sometimes if you're not among the firsts...)... Nokia and MSFT are announcing and then making people wait which is quiet frustrating... I'm just hearing people wanting Lumia 920 and surface pro all the time but they just can't have their hands on it...
Might also be noted that this isn't windows 8 full version so no you cannot install anything you would on the full version. Let's clear that up now. The Pro version will have the full 8 on it with better hardware.
I'll go with the pro when that comes out. The RT is just an 'iPad' with a usb drive, expansive storage and office but it does nothing more for productivity. The pro will and that's what I'm waiting for
That's tough. How do you like the android operating system? You could always get any number of the android tablets on the market (from super cheap to high end)...the asus transformer line of tablets seem really nice, or you could go with an amazon kindle fire hd? It's hard to beat the iPad in build quality and in software though in my opinion. There's just so much software out there for apple's products. I also think windows 8 RT will catch on and get lots of software support in the future.

Excellent review as usual by engadget, no bias or bull, just a good clean quick overlook/review. I like it.
Not on the version out right now. In January, the Surface Pro will be released, which will be the full Windows 8 experience, allowing you to install any program designed for Windows on the desktop and in the "metro" view. True, but on the surface pro you can combine the metro apps with the older legacy apps. It is also very portable.
there is a on screen keyboard if you prefer it or when the cover isn't attached. and yes you can buy it without the keyboard cover.

FINALLY! A decent review. Also...a proper keyboard that doesn't make that "click-clak" noise! SO irritating when studying in the library!!!
I pre-ordered one of these not because its gonna beat (insert tablet name here), but because i like the design, keyboard and ports. Apps will come, when, dunno, it will take time but im ok with that.

there are more and more apps with time...
Because a keyboard is not necessary, although you always have options for keyboard if you want to accessorize it.
So many commenters here blurting random crap about RT, it goes to show that the messaging for what RT and Pro are hasn't worked. RT is meant to be similar to iPad but have a basic productivity focus, whilst Pro does the whole Windows 8 business. I'm getting a Surface RT tomorrow for college/Uni work/entertainment and have a powerful Win 8 desktop for work and gaming, and a laptop with Win 7 that sits in between
I'd buy one if we could get the full version for that price and not just the gimped one.
Yes you can and it automatically stop working once its flipped back so that no movments affect anything you doing
Oh.
Your a good reviewer! I'm going to pick up one of these soon!
I don't see many people jumping onto the Windows RT version of the Surface simply because it doesn't allow you to run full Windows programs like W8 does. Its just a shame that the Windows 8 version is going to be even more expensive :-S.
This is the first non biased review about this tablet. All the others are moaning about lag.
Exactly. Closed market places are restrictive both for the developer and the consumer. Android however, does not suffer from that problem.
full windows in a tablet has been around for a long time. surface pro, ATIV Smart PC, ATIV Q, etc.
I think he means being able to see them both running on the screen at once
Actually, with the Windows Interface, the memory is about the same as a 16GB iPad. Also with Windows, you're more susceptible to viruses, and you'll have to perform windows update. It's also schedule for a price drop after sales weren't as expected. In the end, it's your preference.
Do you have to buy it with the attachable keyboard? or is there an onscreen keyboard you can use?
Can you plug an external hd into the USB port and watching movies, get pictures off it etc?
The lag on the app switching kinda hurt me.. :(
does windows rt only allow you to download applications through the Microsoft app store?
Might get one for Christmas
Does anyone know if the keyboard map is like the Ipad magnetic case? Can you fold it up to protect the screen?
