Enter the Microsoft Surface, a sleek and ultra-modern looking tablet that's gunning to make a charge in the competitive tablet market. More importantly, however, is whether Microsoft is able to soundly capture the embodiment of a highly usable tablet platform with Windows RT. Naturally, there's a lot at stake riding on the back of the Surface -- both from a hardware and software perspective...
And that is something that is great that is overlooked (or deliberately skipped) by so many "reviewers" and "media": Modern apps all have to do search, settings, and menu/functions the same way.

In-app menus or other functions: swipe from the top or bottom
Learn these three things once, and you can use any app.
It's actually an easier and more consistent app experience than iOS or Android.

At launch, it was $500. Now, at Walmart, it's available for $230. The 64GB version. That is a good deal!
You can use the search option in the charm bar to search through the store if you want. In fact, you can use it for any app you're in.

Store does have a search John, swipe left from the right corners of the device and hit the search icon, and it automatically searches the application that you're currently using.
You can search the store. When in the Modern UI mode, just start typing the name of the App you wanna download and then select 'Store' from the search list that comes up from the right side. It'll show you the relevant search results from the store :)
the search is in the charms bar infact you can search any app or anything on the web from the search function in the charms bar. just swipe from the right edge hit search and search whatever you like from any app.

Yes you can. It has been tested with 2.5" HDDs and they were all able to run on the power delivered by the Surface RT. This is one of the big advantages over other tablets.
Also all apps written using Visual Studio 2012 will run on both x86 and RT version if Windows 8. This is good news for developers.
Excellent, comprehensive review. I wish you would type properly though, 12:21 so we can see the fluency of the machine and its error correction capabilities.

Just though I would tell you guys that there actually is a search function in the app store (as well as in any app). Just swipe left to activate the charms and press search and search for the app you want.
Jhon a search option is avalible in the Microsoft Windows store, via the charms menu.

Surface with Windows 8 Pro can run ALL programs that run on a regular windows desktop. So programs like Steam and ITunes will run just *fine on it. It also will run apps from the Windows App Store.

i need to correct you in one thing. search is always available in all apps including the marketplace. just use the charms and select search.

I'm a bit surprised that this review is so extremely positive about everything. Other reviewers used to complain about lag, about inconsistency between Metro (yea i call it that) and Desktop (two browsers that don't sync for example, you have to login seperately) and ultimately about LAG.
So, was there an update already that fixed everything or why the huge discrepancy?
Store has a search option. Go to Store and open charms. Tap search. Get to know the OS before reviewing it.
HTC needs to make a Windows 8/RT tablet. They make awesome phones and their supporters want a tablet from them.
at 15:46 you say the store lacks a search function.. it does not, you find it in the standard menu (With a swipe from the right side) which changes from app to app.
You have the file manager with the conventional windows! And thats awesome !
You can multi-select emails in the email app.
Also concerning apps, what did you expect? The OS is just out. It actually has more apps than iOS for iPad did at its release and its growin faster as well.
It is true that many apps feel rushed. Which is to be expected for a new platform. Although lately there seem to be a lot of updates for apps so developers are slowly bringing more features the Windows version of their apps. Nevertheless it will be an uphill battle for MS.
like a said, i saw a lot of reviews, this is not the only one, and some people on The Verge are against the Surface since the beginning, not all, but some important ones

I fell in love with this at the Microsoft Store. Thinking about buying this. Is it worth it, anybody?
Since app support is growing fast, my last doubt ha been cleared up an I really want to buy it! The only thing I don't like is the touch cover costs way too much.
You find it faster typing on the screen over the TouchCover? This is by far the opposite fro what I have experienced.
search for the app store is the same as searching for an app - Windows does search by where you are so when in the app store just swipe from the right and search for what you looking for - Microsoft did it like that so it's universal throughout the whole OS from PC to tablet to Phone...Pretty good once you learn how to search....

Engadget and The Verge both talked about the same issues, Dana even contacted the guy at the Verge to see if it was only her review unit, sometimes they are faulty after all.
Both had the same complaints. We even saw 1080p video not rendering well on the Surface.
So, was it the review units that had problems or not? I can't tell from this review if everything is fine. Its just a bit strange.
Does the desktop version of the browser supports flash on all sites and silverlight?
How good is it with downloaded pdfs? I will be doing a lot of reading and am looking for a good tablet for reading and highlighting mostly
Will you settle for intuition over function? In my opinion, the Office Suite alone makes this a more logical choice over the iPad.
Bought it. Great device, absolutely great. Using it as my main PC until I can build a gaming PC.

There is a search option, you guys are missing a key aspect of the CHARMS bar.
Swipe from the right bezel and you have a universal search..

from a normal viewing distance, the naked eye can't find the difference between the retina display and the 1366x768 display.
Does the type dock work as protection as well as the touch dock???
Wish you previewed the Office suite, but other than that, pretty good!

This is the common behavior on windows 8, please add an annotation or something to correct this.

you have a select all feature :) touch control on the keyboard and for instance the first email to select and the last, and have all selected! bing....
I was issue one by my school, an now I have finished, I now own it. It's good for certain things but awful for other things, I use it alongside an ipad mini 2, iphone 5c and iPod touch 4g :)
no particular reason.. it's just fun to mock ipad users^^
also you can get a lot more serious work done on the surface compared to the ipad, that's kinda the reason.

I bought a surface and I am very happy with it. But I do have an iphone which i plan to get rid off soon.
I want to buy the rt, however all i want it for is to be able to plug my external hard in and watch films smoothly.. also the use of microsoft word and so on.... I have been reading up alot but apparently people say it lags when watching films??? also how is this to watch youtube videos and so on... please help!!!

I used to look at The Verge as giving fairly good reviews. But recently, I don't know, they seem not to be satisfied with every other device that is not Apple's.

you didn't really play any apps or games to see how the performance was.Gnomelocker showed that the RT couldn't even handle Cut the Rope

It doesn't run x86 apps only ARM apps that are in the windows store :(

Im gonna buy the surface 2.0 if it has a higher resolution because I want a tablet mainly for reading/media consumption. And I feel like windows RT is a great, fun and refreshing OS but the hardware isnt there :( I'm still waiting on buying my first tablet!
