Hey Jordan thanks a lot, I really appreciate you for making this video! I am shooting my first wedding this September and am trying to get mentially prepared. I thought about renting an extra camera but it really isn't in my budget. So I am glad that it is possible to shoot solo!!! I'm more excited than nervous now and can't wait to try out your techniques. Thanks again man!
Yep that’s a great point! I’m in the process of getting a second camera now, but if I didn’t have plans of getting a second in the near future, I for sure would’ve gone that route.
Filming my first wedding tomorrow, and I'm glad I did all my homework and asked for the day's program in advance to plan out how I would move. But the thing that worries me the most is during the ceremony and where to position my second camera and you explained it so well, I got a good visual of how I can make it work. Thankyou for this video, definitely subbed. :)
Jordan Nelson It went really well, thankyou for asking. 🙂 It all went by so quick but managed to get really good useable shots throughout the day/night. 😄 A very simple and short ceremony but had heaps of fun filming it all.
I totally agree especially on Tip # 2 and Tip # 8 !!!!!!!! I get it all in writing beforehand, and record our contractual discussion (video and audio both on a small consumer camcorder) if they don't mind me doing so...... keeps me from missing tidbits they might have hinted at, and also you'd be surprised how many people have faulty memories of what was said or what they claim they wanted..... and I have them describe to me what they picture the perfect wedding video would include so it gives me a blueprint of what they expect and I add the professional touches (movement, etc) and kind of tweak it to their expectations.... first wedding was a free one for my sister and I HIGHLY recommend doing a free one (or three) before you start charging for them.........
Awesome advice Jordan, hope to put it to use this weekend when I'll be filming my first wedding! Look forward to seeing more content from you, keep it up!
I did a lot of weddings by myself. it becomes easy after awhile. just get a nice stabilized lens and learn to hold the camera for the most stable shots. You just have to bounce aroound alot and have shots already planned from experience since every wedding is different. i have about 6 cameras but people usually want my one camera package.
btw I'm a new subscriber to you ! Whomever the 9 dislikes might be have obviously not shot a wedding before, otherwise you'd realize this video pretty well sums up everything you're going to be dealing with.... you get started on your very first wedding and before you know it the damn thing is over..... a plan and a checklist is super important!
Wow great advice! This video is older but definitely needed! 😂 I went to a film school, took a break from film for 3 almost 4 years and just got asked to do a wedding in April! It's almost like I forgot everything, Im sooooo nervous. I plan on renting like 3 back up cameras because Im that nervous with how my shots will turn out. Im even running a fake wedding next month to figure out what Im going to do. Thanks so much for your tips. It helps with the process.
Hey Jordan. Excellent video. I recently bought a TON of equipment for making short films. After the dust settled, I realized I went a little crazy with all the equipment I bought. So, now it looks like I should look into shooting wedding videos to make back some of that money I spent. I'll check out your channel for more on wedding videos. Thanks. Great work.
VFX Todd Wedding videography can be very lucrative, that’s for sure. I think that’d be a great place to start, even if wedding films aren’t what you want to do in the long term.
Hey Jordan great video. Question as a single shooter what are you shooting with for lenses during the ceremony? Also are you on a tripod, monopod, gimbal, etc?
Thanks man! I use a Tamron 28-75mm lens on my Sony A7iii attached to a Glidecam HD-Pro all day long (except for reception dancing - handheld). Even for the ceremony o use the Glidecam. I’m thinking about switching to a monopod for the ceremony though
The Sony A7III has a 30 minute recording time limit, so the only time I consider that issue is during the ceremony. I’ll simply stop recording for a second and immediately begin recording again just to break up the clips.
Yeah great realistic angle of how to do it low key. But I would warn people about giving raw footage. I would not do this. Because people show it around, then people see something that is not the standard of your work. It doesn’t matter if you tell them, “hey this is just the raw footage” they have seen it and that is what they remember. I would suggest if people want more footage of the wedding, tell them you will edit the out takes into a seperate video, that maybe not flow as well as the Master, but at least you had some control over colour grading, transitions, speed, and focused shots. Just my feel on it.
Appreciate that comment! I totally understand that and know people take the same route you do. In my experience, I've never had an issue with anyone sharing raw footage. The highlight film is what's getting posted and shared around, so I've never had people share any raw footage online. Even if they did, chances are those people have already seen the highlight film, so the raw footage will definitely just look like a raw clip in comparison. And if they think, "this shot looks bad, let me check this guy out", they'll go to my website and see all my highlight films and realize what's up. I think adding easy value by sending raw footage to the couple (toasts, first dances, ceremony, first look) outweighs the risk that the raw footage would be shown around and reflect poorly on me. I've just never heard of that happening - but hey, I'm sure it's happened because I definitely don't know everything haha! But I'll never shut the idea down of playing it safe, so you keep doing what's best for ya, don't hear me saying yours is a bad idea.
Hey i really need your help. do i need to provide the full video coverage of the wedding and the reception like a 1 hour video? Or just the highlights of the event like the final edit 5 or 7 min video?
Nichole trisha totally up to you on what you’d like to provide, but I give them a 6-12 minute extended highlight video. Then I simply send them my raw footage of the ceremony, speeches, and first dances. If they want other raw footage, I can send them what I have on request.
Just got my first ceremony weeding to next month. I charged just 250 for 5 minutes video (bride asked for a very simple video). do you think I charged to little? cheers
This wont end well. I do stuff as more of a hobby rn than in any professional capacity and my friend doesnt want to pay ppl so shes asked me to do both the videography and photography by myself with no extra hands bc she doesnt know anyone else who knows how to use anything more fancy than a phone cam. For free. She wants the whole ceremony and shiz on video. And lots of pics. And she expects it to have the same quality if she hired ppl. On top of tht its already expected that im put in charge of everything to do with decorations, flowers, table layout at reception, ect. Also for free.
In my opinion that’s an unreasonable request. If you try to pull that off it’ll go badly. I can’t see how you could do both photo and video by yourself.
Thank you Jordan!! Very much appreciate your videos and sharing your knowledge. Much love brother.
Thank you so much, filming my first wedding in January
Finally, the video I was looking for. Thank you man.
Awesome, I'm glad it fills a need for ya!
Thanks Jordan. Looking forward to watching your other vids. By the look of the thumbnails you've come along way! Great job.
Much appreciated! Slowly but surely trying to grow the channel!
This is what I've been looking for.

Totally possible to shoot solo!
You can also rent cameras and other gear that you don’t have. Build that into your pricing.
Yep that’s a great point! I’m in the process of getting a second camera now, but if I didn’t have plans of getting a second in the near future, I for sure would’ve gone that route.
I agree the two top ones are Borrowlenses.com or Lensrentals.com

Violet Winchester How’d the wedding go?!

Kevin P Yeah I did three for free to have enough to promote myself and give people an idea of what they’d be getting.
Sweet. Filming my first wedding in an couple weekends. This definitely helped.
Awesome! Glad it helped, especially a fellow ginger 😂

Awesome advice Jordan, hope to put it to use this weekend when I'll be filming my first wedding! Look forward to seeing more content from you, keep it up!

Thanks Katie! Please let me know how the wedding goes! And yes it's a great idea to get a practice wedding in beforehand, that'll be so helpful :)
Katie Two Dogs 🤣🤣🤣
Have you done the wedding yet?
Best advice I've heard in a long time, and well presented.
Donal M That’s very nice, I appreciate it :)
Thank you.Great advice. I'm filming my Son's wedding, and need this video to help me out.
Peace
Thank you!! All the videos immediately start with needing like four cameras and my level and wallet does not agree with that right now haha
I feel you man, Im in the same boat week in week out!

Great content! So needed in the industry!
Thank you for making this video! I will be filming my first wedding soon and I only have 1 camera so I really needed this advice.
Charles Miner hey I’m glad it was helpful! Hope your first one goes well!
My advice is to try to rent another camera. I started shooting alone, but having another camera on a tripod was of great help.
I have the same situation as you, this video is really helpful! thanks a lot.
We're in it together! Glad it helped!
Great advice! I'm going to be doing video for my buddy's photography business and it's just me and a a6000 so I'm taking notes

Nice video. What do you do about the recording time limits of A7iii or any other camera you use?

Great advice, Im filming a grand opening for a beauty bar this weekend...your video was informative.
Thanks Tiara, I'm so glad it was helpful! Let me know how your event went!
Great stuff. Thanks!
What if your only camera fails?
How do you work the microphone if the bride's dress will not work with the wires?
Yeah great realistic angle of how to do it low key.

my first wedding I charged 800
helpful video. i sub
What kind of camera did you shoot with?
Negus Canon Rebel t6i
Im doing photography and video on my own 😉 How about that.
The bg music too loud and distracting

Portfolio work is important but that's just completely insane. For all of that you should be charging $6000+ but that's not going to happen.
You can now do it with phones and tablets
I can't believe you only
Shoot with only 1 camera.
720
Great tips!
Appreciate it!!
