    Great work Mike. The Timergrapher results shows such a massive improvement with the all the work you did. I agree with you that the hairspring was probably replaced with one not of that watch. Other than the timing ( +/- ) the beat error and amplitude still look great so I do think it has to be the hairspring. You couldn't source a new one?

      Thanks mate. Appreciate you commenting especially. It’s an improvement definitely but my mishap with the pinion will haunt me plus the positional errors. However I think I have demonstrated my limitations and how this hobby is not easy.

    Excellent video Mike. I wanted to let you know a trick I learned from a watchmaker friend. If you adjust the balance so the pallet fork is in the center of the banking pins, that will usually get your beat error very low to start. Then you can fine tune from there. I love your channel and can't wait for the next video. Cheers!

      Thank you it means a lot this comment. Someone commented on my "fireman" video that I complained to much and it was unwatchable and ended with "back to Wristwatch revival I go" painful comment. I like Marshal but this work is to make him look like a pro, no real mistakes and all polished. I could do that with a script and editing but its not raw and real. Its probably why his channel is so successful and mine (one of the oldest on YT in this genre) has never really grown.

    Nice little vintage watch. Thanks for the video on your work on it. You probably know by now that the seconds hand post may well have been broke off from the beginning. The pipe was probably just stuck down in the top of the canon pinion. The good news is that whoever broke it left it with the watch in some fashion regardless of the breakage. Cheers.

    Top job on sorting out that hairspring! Clearly someone else had been in the watch before you. I wouldn’t be surprised if that center wheel arbor was already damaged before you pulled that second hand off. For positional errors, you could always uninstall the hairspring and check for poise. Then again, that would mean you need to repeat the beat error correction, which we all know is a huge pain. I’m not sure how much positional adjustments were made to these watches from the factory, but just something to consider next time. Loved the video and like the sentiment about adding to the history of the watch. - Chris

      Hi Chris. Pleased you enjoyed it. I am however, devistated by some of the mistakes and the second and pinion... You are right I should have checked poise, my poising tool thingy is not of very good quality at all but still... In all honesty due to lack of time and the surpise of the issues so late on there was little I could do. Ivan taking the watch on Tueday changed the course of the video as I would have otherwise found the wheel and possiblty a balance.

    Great job. You are doing just fine. That balance wheel probably needs a bit of poise to help in vertical positions. You can easily handle that. Just take your time and work slowly as you learn. A good poise and clean balance pivots will make a difference in its accuracy. That second hand pivot issue is not uncommon so, don't sweat it. Probably already had a fracture.... Easy fix some day, maybe on next service. 😊

The pinion was broken I think from canon pinion removal, its the last time I use tweezers for that job! its the first second hand pinion I have broken in years too so I still feel bad about it. As for poise. I do not know enough about this yet. Ironically for another watch I am filming I need to change a staff, a job that after 6 years I have still never done! I am getting some guidence from a watchmaker friend in preparation. I know how to check poise but not necessarily how to correct it. Yet! thanks for your support.

    • @MyRetroWatches
      @MyRetroWatches  8 місяців тому

      What surprised me though is the stamping of Albert Grossenbacher who my research suggests make their own movements. To find out it’s an ETA is odd, unless the train bridge is not of this movement originally .
      Problem with a watch this old is who knows it’s past.

    • @MrSloika
      @MrSloika 8 місяців тому

      @@MyRetroWatches Some watch manufacturers that produced their own in-house movements also purchased ebauches for cheaper models. Jaeger-LeCoultre is an example. The 'entry level' Club Automatic model contained movements which were purchased from AS. It's also common for watch manufacturers to mark the ebauches with their own brand and caliber number. I'm currently working on a Bulova movement that I salvaged from an old pocket watch which I intend to use in a wrist watch case. The movement is branded Bulova and has a Bulova caliber designation but the the movement is just a standard Unitas 497. I also have a movement salvaged from an old Caravelle brand pocket watch . Caravelle is Bulova's 'entry level' brand. The movement from that Caravelle pocket watch is branded Caravelle and has a Caravelle caliber number but it's a standard Unitas 6498 movement.

    Brilliant on the collet beat adjustment. Good egg!. I just had a slip while doing that very thing and almost ruined the hairspring.
    This is the most aggravating hobby anyone can bedevil themselves with. I have serviced, cleaned, and oiled many a watch, and 9 times out of 10 when I put them on the timegrapher afterwards, they're out of beat and running very fast (> 5 minutes per day). Many times, the balance needs to be poised, esp. after a new balance staff or hairspring is installed, and this is yet more tools and supplies one needs. My advice, before you undertake this hobby, try something less nerve-racking like picking fly shit out of pepper with boxing gloves and less expensive like, say, collecting Faberge eggs.

    • @MyRetroWatches
      @MyRetroWatches  8 місяців тому

      Your comment is brilliant! fly shit and Faberge made me laugh. It was the first time I have done collet adjustment like that. I would normally drop the balance wheel off the cock and do it that way but seeing Joe do this on a Rolex video last week was like an ephifany. Just needed a good viewing angle and a stiff enough oiler to give it a nudge.

Not so long ago, there were many gatekeepers from the “old guard” who would dissuade amateurs from even making an attempt, and many others would mask their own struggles, making it hard to estimate the difficulty.
    Of course, anyone with patience and determination can start in on it. You gave me the courage to finally crack open a watch, and I’m so glad I did.
    Also thank you for speaking up about your health issues. We are of similar age, and you have successfully motivated me to talk to my doctor about a test. I’m so glad you are doing well. Best wishes to you and your family!

      Firtsly my apologies for the late reply. Thank you very much for your comment. Its remarks like this that make it all work while. What I do on video seemingly is not for everyone and probably only appreciated by fellow hobbyists such as yourself. Many other channels are in it for the views and money that comes with that, success it seems in this niche is about telling a story and showing how good you are even when you might not be. I can edit my videos to make me look perfect but then I am not being true to myself. My journey was only ever to document my progress and inspire more to the hobby. I may have been one of the first watch repair channels but I will never be one of the biggest even with my back catalog!
      I am just pleased by reading your words so thank you for taking time to write.
      finally yes please get your prostate checked regularly, its probably okay but leaving things to chance is not something I would now recommend.
      Good luck with your watchmaking

    Great job Michael! Really very impressed with your work to reduce all those errors. 😮 Pity about the seconds hand pinion, but these things happen and fair play you don't shy away from showing your oopsies.
    Just on the radium. Chances are the hands are radium too. Years ago I got a joblot of hands from ebay and they were the same bright green. I thought non radium as they even held a glow after exposure to light. I ran my geiger counter over the packet and sure enough radioactive. Not as active as say on earlier trench watches(they laid it on thick back then), but still 'hot'. I've seen a few 50's watches with lurid green handsets that were radium.
    There's a bit of a myth(IMHO) regarding differences in hand lume colour and dials. That if they're different colours they can't be original. That's _generally_ the case from the 70's on, but I've seen NOS examples from the 30's 40's and 50's(70's Heuer too) where the colours varied a lot as they aged. With most, if not all, Swiss brands the hands and dials were made by different companies and bought in so off the bat the paint mixes were different. Plus handsets are exposed to air and moisture on both sides and the lume is usually thicker so they can age at quite different rates.

      Ref hands. You could well be right. I was sure I tested them but I e just looked back on my unboxing video of 8 vintage watches and at 27 minutes in I test the hands (crudely ) with my even more crude iPhone Geiger adapter and the hands came back hot.
      That said it was still whilst installed and under the crystal so could be misread.

    Very enjoyable video, as usual, Mike and superb picture quality. I suspect the balance spring is not sitting between the regulator pins properly so is, effectively, "getting longer" in the vertical positions. Probably due to the terminal curve not being exactly correct after your (excellent), de-kinking. I suppose the watch is in Singapore by now so next time you're there... 🙂 I think maybe you should invest in a trinocular microscope so you can maintain a stereoscopic image while you're sharing the pictures with us through the "third eye"? Not terribly cheap but I've found mine to be worth every penny! Perhaps some of us could sponsor your hard graft on the allotment - a pound per square yard dug?? I'll get me coat...

      @MyRetroWatches  8 місяців тому

      Haha! I will be selling spuds next year! I think you are right about the spring. It can only be that causing the issue and perhaps with more patience and persistence on my part I could have found it in time. I just ran out of time completely on this one. Didn’t expect Ivan to take the watch hence ending the video how I did.
      I have been thinking about getting one of those scopes. I’m still filming the downward shot on the digital ( one in the review) plus my main camera for side on.

      Sorry for the delay in replying; a family 'do' this evening. I bought the 'Amscope with articulating arm' from Cousins along with the camera they sell for it - as you say, somewhat over £500 once you've added VAT and delivery. I've had a good look and I can't find an actual model number anywhere on it. I got a X 0.5 Barlow lens, which extends the working height to around 6 inches (plenty), and found I also needed a 5mm C mount C-CS spacer ring on the camera to make it focus at the same point as the eye pieces. These last parts, and an LED ring (essential and around £10), I obtained via e-Bay. All in all I reckon I spent around £575 (eek!). Mine was funded by my redundancy from the BBC a few years back. This setup works very well for me but I don't think the articulated arm would suit your videoing requirements as it can be a bit wobbly when you move it or bang your head into it - you'd probably need a heavier duty, single arm job which I haven't investigated - yet. Hope this helps and I'm happy to answer any other questions you may have.

    Fantastic video. I would like to know how to play a spiral like that, every time I try it the spiral ends up destroyed. I would say that you are an amateur watchmaker because you don't charge for it, but in the technical aspect you could be comparable to many professionals. A few weeks ago I serviced an eta 2551, a very very small automatic movement and they are certainly complicated given their size, and the etas are very grateful. Yesterday I destroyed two Seiko 4r16 and 6r15 balance wheels in the stupidest way and I will have to buy a couple of NH35 movements to replace it. Thanks for the video.

    Oof, gutted about the seconds pinion too. I'd be lying if I said I've never done that though. I've not tried it yet myself, but I've heard that the positional error could be the regulator pins being too far apart. Or, like someone mentioned, more fiddling with the terminal curve. Maybe next time, as it appears Ivan took the watch with him. I'll have to remember the trick how you adjusted the collet though, I have an old watch I'll be regulating this coming week. Great video, I think the watch turned out quite nice all in all. Cheers!

      Hello Bristol. Thank you for your comment. I am still feeling bad about the pinion and had Ivan not taken the watch the video would have ended differently. @sonvu9756 8 місяців тому

      @@MyRetroWatches I don't think you should use tweezer to remove the canon pinion, it's so easy to break the second hand pinion that way. The way I do it is with the very cheap Chinese presto tool and I never break any pinion using it. But even with that tool when I'm doing a service on a movement I remove the chain of wheel bridge and the wheels before flipping the movement over and remove the canon, so that there is absolute zero chance for the second hand pinion to break simply because it is not in there in the first place :) Also after seeing you and so many people using automatic oiler, I've finally decided to go for it and ordered the 1A chinese copy version. Will see how it goes, even if it's a trash it was only 24€ :) Lastly I think you should clean and fit the escape wheel's cap jewels dry first then oil them through the underneath with your automatic oiler, this way it would be much easier and much less chance to disturb the oil.

    • @MyRetroWatches
      @MyRetroWatches  8 місяців тому +1

      @@sonvu9756 thank you for this feedback. Let me address some of the points.
      Cannon pinion, I have used presto tools, heck I even have one designed for canon although that usually is too wide to grip the pinion. I have used a thick pair of tweezers for years and never once had an accident, this could be the first time that has happened ever that I recall. That being said once is too many.
      The escape jewels, weirdly on this watch the auto oiler would not go through enough to oil the jewel. In the video you will notice I did the balance jewel off camera and proceeded to show the escape jewel with my sticky tool. This was because I tried the auto oiler first as I intended to skip filming both and just show them installed.
      I do have room for improvement, we all do and you will now most likely see me remove canon pinion differently in videos to come.

    As a hobbyist I realized that I'd have to invest a huge wad of cash in a stereoscope because I couldn't
    do hairsprings on my modest microscope. All the while having a good chance that practice was
    going to screw up more hairsprings than repair. I took the cheaper/easier option of just replacing
    the whole balance assembly. At least I was getting a new unfatigued hairspring with no problems
    with the pivots. Yes it is cheating, but I'm the one who'll have to live with that. I'm a hobbyist.🤷🏼‍♂
    Your issue with the timing results in various positions has to be pivot wear/distortion or the jewels
    have worn themselves slightly elliptically. You aren't going to be able to see that.

      @@MyRetroWatches Dutch? Nobody speaks Dutch, it's a secret language :) About 50% of the English language is Dutch, old Dutch and old English, and old Frisian were dialects of the same language a mere 1000 years ago. Ad Low Saxon to the list too... So you already know a lot of Dutch words. Simple home words like arm, water, hand, stool, sand, wind, see, sea, that, foot, finger. children, kirk, calve , hound, grass, hair, fowl, stam, clock, house, mouse, rat, swine, bed, well the lijst goes on and on... :)

    why do you make every excuse you can think of, not to re plate watches your fixing?? you half finish them at the cost of the look of them when you're supposedly done

      I don’t make excuses. I don’t have the equipment yet to do replating and when I do I will then have to practice it to get right which will take time I simply do not have right now. I personally like the original look and in some instances rectifying a case will decrease its value.
      I have done plenty of stainless case work on this channel, look at my Pogue video for instance.
