In South Korea, dog meat was not considered a staple food but a special food that cured diseases. Dog food in Korean, 보신탕(Bosintang) literally means "Soup that heals the body". I am a South Korean, so I asked my parents (born in the 1970s) if they had ever eaten dog meat, and they said they found dog meat very disgusting, because they both had a pet dog when they were young. But they also said they had very rarely seen a place that sold dog meat. I also asked my grandparents (born in 1940s) about dog meat, and they said it was very common when they were children and that they had eaten it, but dog meat was very expensive so they could barely eat it. They said that there was no feeling of disgust or guilt at all when eating dog meat, but dog meat did not regard as ordinary meat like pork or beef, but it was more like expensive folk medicine or special food. And when they became adults and bought pet dogs for their children(my parents), they said they did not perceive their pet dogs as livestock at all. (Just as there are different species of pigs for eating and pet pigs) Personally, I have never seen dog meat sold or dog meat food in my entire life living in South Korea for 21 years, and I only see it on the news often. But I realized the dog meat was quite common until recently.
This law won't stop people from consuming or selling dog meat or butchering it. For instance, prostitution is illegal in South Korea, but there are brothels everywhere.
I'm a 24-year-old Korean who is learning English with BBC Learning English. It's safe to say that young people like myself simply don't eat dog meat, as it is predominantly associated with the dietary culture of older generations, I guess almost more than in their 50s. Despite this, the governmental policy to prohibit such practices has not gathered a favourable response among even younger people. Many people say that why should the government ban and legislate against a dying culture or a sunset industry that will naturally fade away over a generation From this point onward, it's my personal opinion. Let's think about the point of view of animals that are eaten. They'd find it as if dogs and cats were 19th-century white men with blue-eyed, fair-haired among other species. I think it's a bit absurd that the fate of death and life is determined by one's affinity or lack thereof with humans
I was wondering about this and from my perspective as well as a none Korean I have the same opinion as you. Just because you own a dog doesn't mean you should force everybody else not to eat it. But most people are illogical and it's clear this entire thing is emotional and not reasonable
Nearly the same situation in China, dog meat consumers born after 1970s are hardly be seen, if Korean government totally banned it, consumers could still take a short trip to a Chinese autonomous district located alongside the China-PRK border line and have a hotpot. That prohibition is more likely to make the society pose a negative attitude toward this industry.

OMG!!! I am overjoyed!!! You know here in Colombia we have laws that punish abuse or neglect in dogs ownership, I mean dogs are as our babies here!!! 7 out of 10 homes have at least one dog, we love them... Mine is Simón and also have a cat, Lulú, and both are adopted and we love them, we protect them and we respect them!!! Bye the way, how is my English?
Just remember☝️, the meat of cats and dogs is usually not eaten for one simple reason - it is not profitable for the industry. Those who say that dogs are innocent (but eat other animals) are hypocrites.
I agree with you. We don't eat dog or cat meat simply because we love those animals in a different way. I think is valid thought that's cruel or horrible, obviously, but we need to be honest.
The culture of eating dog is almost disappeared nowadays. Almost nobody in young generations prefer to eat dog. That is kind of old school in Korea. One thing is that there are plenty of urgent candidates of laws which have to be selected or declared. I have no idea why the president of Korea is focusing only minor stuff.
👍👍 Good example! Here is our correction: Lamb meat is off the menu on our table because IT'S overpriced. Check out this short video on the difference between 'because of' and 'because': ua-cam.com/video/ZK_DZeziHNI/v-deo.html 😊
After this stupid law was passed, there were protests to ban the consumption of duck meat. Because of this stupid case, when the people protested to ban duck meat and chicken, the government had nothing to say. There weren't many restaurants that sold dog meat anyway, and even those were disappearing. This is because many people in Korea have pet dogs. Even if it wasn't banned by law, it would have disappeared naturally. And I don't understand the basis for the ban. The law should be fair and consistent. Human free will should be respected. I like dogs and cats, but whether or not to legally ban their consumption is a separate issue. From a vegetarian's perspective, the meat itself should be banned. How disgusting would it be to them? I've never seen Hindus tell other countries not to eat beef. The same goes for Islam. I've never seen anyone say that pork is disgusting. I don't know the basis for the ban.
It started from when Korea was in so many wars happened in the past. Even Korea is a very small country. Everything had been destroyed since Korea was under Japan and then the Korean War. not many stuff to eat. Very poor. So people had to find something to eat. One of them was eating dogs. My point is that you should understand their history and think “why” before judging them. Btw, Korea is not poor anymore and they fixed it by a law now. Job well done! 🎉
