Can you imagine privately battling the things Norm was while doing the final stand-up on the final show of one of his all-time heroes? Norm was one of a kind, and this not only proves how funny he is, but how strong as well
@@southsideman4891 I was just coming to say that I wouldn’t be surprised if Dave knew ahead of time… this was a gift from Dave for Norm to be the last comic, and whatever he whispered was related to the whole thing.
And the bit he did about Germany was honestly one of the all time great bits in comedy history. Just pure genius. I love that he did that bit in the final standup spot ever on Letterman. Just goes to show after all the hilarious things Norm has ever said, he was just as funny if not funnier in his oldest age as he was when he was technically “in his prime.”
Wow….Norm knew. I’ve got tears in my eyes after this. He knew he was on borrowed time and to be able to be the last comic on Letterman…What a roller coaster of emotions he must’ve been on. Fighting for his life while making people laugh. I’m speechless…
How fortunate we are I was born in 60 to know Norm and his comedy and how you try to explain to young kids today how it was funny and good back then and innocent and loving it was different then we had fun
Not only was Norm's last set on Letterman heartfelt, but it's one of the most well constructed 9 mins I've ever heard. He put the work in on writing, placement, & timing and it paid off for everyone. That is how you honor a legend.
Knowing what we know now.. It's so much more understandable.. Norm truly had the clarity to love everyone and mean it.. It's such a beautiful thing to see.. He made us laugh with his comedy but in the end he brought us to tears with his humanity..
Thank you for this interview. Norm was my favorite comedian. As a fan, I am completely devastated of learning of his passing today. There are thousands of comedians but nobody delivers in such masterly detail like Norm did.
A lot of people will forever wonder what Bill Murray's character whispered to Scarlett Johansson's character at the end of Lost in Translation. I'll forever wonder what David Letterman whispered to Norm MacDonald. Rest in Peace, Norm.
Norm's jokes just hit differently. Notice how he says "I couldn't afford the shoes" and how Howard caught it a bit later. That's just how next level Norm was.
This is why we love Howard. Thanks for this. Norm is gonna be, and is one of our generations’ finest comedians. The man is a genius. Gotta be to be that funny. Makes me laugh and that’s the key...
He told him in his ear ' I luv u' ... Norm came a very long way to hear is hero say that to him. Truly amazing. And that's when life makes sense. Rip norm Mac Donald.
A model of what every celebrity should be--and is so rare Keep a wall between your private person and your public performance person. This moment is touching cause it's a rare break between this wall. So we know it's no BS.
5:48 For me I think one of the most fascinating things about the Norm/Letterman dynamic is that he didn't interact with him backstage or away from the show.
I have combed through the blood and bones of UA-cam...and have yet to find one Norm talk show appearance that isn't hilarious and/or instantly rewatchable.
From one Canadiens fan to another, thank you for all you brought to us Norm. Your brand of comedy, will always be among my very favourite. As well, a really good human being. You will be terribly missed down here...
I really wish there was a "Love This" button, cause goddamn he makes me laugh so hard all the time. Miss Ya Norm Baby! You are truly the greatest comedian to grace our timeline.

Slight correction; "HIS final show, of one of his all time heroes" as well. GOAT.
He must have told Dave
@@southsideman4891 I was just coming to say that I wouldn’t be surprised if Dave knew ahead of time… this was a gift from Dave for Norm to be the last comic, and whatever he whispered was related to the whole thing.
Dignity sounds strange as applied to him, but that is the way he chose to go out, with dignity.

Now, with Norm's passing, this interview is even more enlightening. RIP Norm.
Yes
So much makes sense now. What a tragic loss for the world.
That's how I got here. RIP NORM
Breaks my heart. Everyone from my childhood is passing...Norm was the GOAT!
:( here for the same thing
This hits so different after today's news. You'll be missed Norm
Definitely..
RIP
Spot on!

He can sleep now rip Norm
You were one of a kind brother
Wow….Norm knew. I’ve got tears in my eyes after this. He knew he was on borrowed time and to be able to be the last comic on Letterman…What a roller coaster of emotions he must’ve been on. Fighting for his life while making people laugh. I’m speechless…
Me too. I'm speechless. It is mind boggling how skillful and strong he was in his last days. Amazing.
How fortunate we are I was born in 60 to know Norm and his comedy and how you try to explain to young kids today how it was funny and good back then and innocent and loving it was different then we had fun
this is the Way for us all. Norm chose to make it a blessing.
So it is
It’s in the ego- rooted in our pride
Reminder that we all are on borrowed time.
I can’t with Norm crying. Rest In Peace, you wonderful, kind man. And thank you for everything. #FuckCancer.
Rest in Peace Norm... the legend, a wonderful human being, and the real Colonel Sanders.

...or so the Germans would have us believe.
We love Norm!
All-Right
And Norm loved Dave and Dave loved Norm.
So, the Taliban beat "The World" without masks or vaccines?
RIP Norm.
@Book Book yup. So sad.
If Dave was his father figure.. Conan was his weird brother figure.
Wonderfully said
I love every single segment Norm and Conan ever did.
or perhaps, a crazy uncle?...
@@joshpierce7820 They were about the same age
Which is fitting because conan sees Dave as a comedic father figure as well
RIP Norm MacDonald. Grew up watching this lovely human being.
RIP to one of the greatest comedians of all time, the world won't be the same without you Norm
This was a great interview, just like ALL of Norm's appearances.
He's a good guy
Actually compared to his others on the show it wasn’t. This is when he was on the apology tour
@@YokerBoyWhat was he apologizing for?
Watching this after hearing about Norm's passing moments ago. Really puts those tears into a different perspective. RIP, Norm.
Norm’s last set on Letterman is the greatest talk show set ever performed by a comedian.
Agreed
“The WORLD!!!” The delivery is 2nd to none
now there is no tonight show you want to see.
Spot on. The routine he did that night was pure gold, as strong a set as I’ve seen anyone do.
I'd put it up there with Kaufman doing his Elvis impression.
When Norm got CHOKED UP on 'Letterman', I just CRIED!!!! I bet Dave's doing that now.
Dave, Conan, Seth, Jimmy... All of them, I'm sure.
He is so brave.

Norm was such sweetheart and a genuine person. RIP legend.
Norm is and always will be an absolute legend and he will be missed.
This was a moment so much bigger than any of us knew. Heartbreaking and sweet.
Howard's greatest strength has always been pulling genuine truths out of guarded people. No one does it better.

RIP to a legend. What a genius at his craft.
That was actually pretty dam cool how he chocked up for Letterman. Shows he's a human just like us and not just a famous comedian.
So genuine.... Such a loss. Grateful for his authenticity and willingness to be vulnerable. Wow.
Norm's love bomb threw Dave - he forgot to emphasize the MAC in Macdonald when he thanked him.
RIP Norm, I can't even imagine what this is doing to those around him. He's such a magical person. To know him must have been mystical.
That moment brought a tear to my eye as well. You can tell Norm had a great reference for Dave. God Bless Norm Macdonald.

I loved him on letterman. And he was always so good on conan

Norm obviously knew his days were numbered, so he was really saying good bye to Dave.
