  • Having a child who has a central line can create a lot of questions for parents, and maybe even some apprehension. In this video, Children’s Hospital Colorado shows parents how they can change the cap on their child’s central line at home.
*This how-to video does not take the place of medical instruction or treatment for specific medical condition.

Ummmm....no. You did not clean the lumens before putting in a new clave. Unbelievable how badly so many medical professionals break sterile protocol. And cap changes should be done the same way whether home or at the hospital.

Hi Brooke. Thank you for your comment. We’re committed to providing the best evidence-based care to every patient and have reviewed this video with experts from our infection prevention team. Our standard of practice, which is in line with our experience and published research, is not to wipe the open line. This is because wetting connections or wetness around the open lumen can lead to bacteria traveling around the connection threads and inside the lumen, which we want to avoid. Though there are no national recommendations or standardized procedures for disinfecting open hubs from hospital to hospital, our evidence demonstrates that avoiding wetting the open line is best practice.
As demonstrated in this video, *clean* gloves should always be used when changing the cap at home. (The technique may only be different at home because parents don’t often receive sterile gloves in their supplies for home care.) Whether at the hospital or at home, all caregivers should use aseptic technique to perform these procedures.
      We hope that helps clarify.
