- From Baku and Beyond: Vibrant Cities and Scenic Landscapes - Azerbaijan 🇦🇿*
Diverse topography, unique sights, historical monuments, a European feel, easy accessibility, proximity, quick visa processing-these are all reasons why Azerbaijan.
You can reach Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan, from Delhi in just four hours on a direct Indigo flight. Book your tickets at least two months in advance.
Indians can obtain an e-visa, which is usually processed within two days of application.
The flight from Delhi arrives early in the morning at Baku's Heydar Aliyev International Airport.
I arranged for an airport pickup through my hotel. The driver was waiting with a placard.
On the way to the hotel,I bought a SIM card and exchanged some dollars. The currency in Azerbaijan is the Azerbaijani Manat (1 Manat = 49 INR).
I booked the Center Hotel on Nizami Street in the heart of Baku city. The accommodation was very convenient during my stay.
Check-in formalities were completed quickly. The staff was polite, and the room was very clean.
Most of the must-see places in Baku city are within a radius of three to four kilometers. I walked along the uniquely tiled Nizami Street, getting a feel for the city within half an hour.
After returning to the hotel and having breakfast, I walked to the nearby Icherisheher, the Old City. It's a city within a large fort known as the Double Gate.
The modern city outside and the ancient city inside are separated by this fort wall.
Upon entering the Old City, there's a tourism information center. The receptionist greeted me warmly with a smile.
Using the city map provided at the counter, I got an idea of the places to visit. Tickets for some of the sights within the Old City can also be purchased there.
The Old City has enough sights to see for an entire day . Palaces , watchtowers, underground hammams (baths), beautiful European streets, graffiti walls, street food, cafes, and numerous street vendors.
I also planned a trip to Gobustan and Sheki, leaving Baku city for a while. I opted for a group tour .
The Gobustan tour included Mud Volcano, Fire Mountain, Ramana Castle, Ateshgah Fire Temple, and Bibi Heybat Mosque.
The Sheki day tour included Shamakhi Mosque, Ismayilli Hanging Bridge, Nohur Lake, Sheki Khan's Palace, and the Karvansaray.
Across from the Maiden Tower in the Old City is Baku Boulevard Park. Its a promenade parallel to the Baku coastline with an amusement park, fountains, memorials, and walkways.
Additionally, National Flag Square, Carpet Museum, Little Venice, Deniz Mall, Baku Eye, and Crystal Hall are all within walking distance if you're ready to explore on foot.
The funicular ride near the Carpet Museum takes you to Highland Park.
The park features the Turkish Martyrs' Mosque, Martyr’s Lane (a cemetery for those who participated in Black January and the Karabakh War), and the Eternal Flame memorial.
The panoramic view of the Caspian Sea and city skyline from the top of the park is breathtaking. The iconic Flame Tower of Baku is visible from here.
Designed by Iraqi-British architect Zaha Hadid, the Heydar Aliyev Center is a must-see architectural marvel in Baku.
Baku city is walkable without a guide, as long as you have a basic understanding of its layout.
I used the Bolt app for booking taxis, which provided good service.
Pre-booking for long-distance tours is unnecessary.
As you enter the Old City, you'll encounter numerous tour agents there. You can book tours from them ( but don't accept the first price they quote; haggling is common).
Azerbaijan is a paradise for food lovers, with an abundance of non-veg options.
There are several Indian restaurants on Nizami Street, along with McDonald's, Starbucks, and KFC. Local street food is also widely available.
Azerbaijani people are generally friendly and have a special affection for Indians.
I booked my hotel through the Goibibo site. The stay at the Center Hotel on Nizami Street was excellent and convenient . Budget hostels are also available.
The main languages spoken are Azerbaijani, Russian, and Turkish, but English is also widely spoken.
Azerbaijan is a very easy place for solo travelers to visit.
Bolt, Google Translate, Goibibo, Indigo Currency Converter, and Google Maps are useful tools.
The number of days you need depends on your interests.
City sights can be seen in two to three days, while long-distance trips require a full day each, depending on the direction.
Plan according to your available time.
Azerbaijan experiences various climates. I visited in the last week of May, and the weather was pleasant.
