When you hear the name Cambodia, the first thing that comes to anyone’s mind is the magnificent wonder of Angkor Wat. Angkor Wat was truly one of my dream destinations as well.
Spread over approximately 400 acres, Angkor Wat is the largest temple complex in the world.
In Khmer language, Angkor Wat means “City of Temples.”
The construction of Angkor Wat began during the reign of King Suryavarman II in the 12th century and was completed approximately 35 years later during the reign of Suryavarman VII.
This Hindu temple, dedicated to Vishnu in the 12th century, was later transformed into a Buddhist temple.
A construction showcasing extraordinary craftsmanship, the temple was built using over five million sandstone blocks, quarried from the Kulen Mountains, approximately 50 kilometers away, and transported via rivers.
The central tower stands at a height of 200 feet. The staircase leading to the inner sanctum, where the Vishnu idol is enshrined, consists of 38 steps, each two feet high. The walls are adorned with intricate carvings, and the temple complex is surrounded by protective enclosures.
Angkor was not just a temple; it was part of a grand city that housed over a million people.
From the 9th to the 15th
century, the region surrounding Angkor Wat was the heart of the Khmer Empire. Angkor Wat is approximately 900 years old.
Once a thriving city and the last capital of the Khmer Empire, this city was eventually abandoned, and the new capital was established in Phnom Penh.
The surrounding jungle gradually engulfed this empire. In 1431, Angkor Wat was completely abandoned. In 1840, a French explorer rediscovered Angkor Wat. Later, in the early 20th century, the French devised a plan to restore the temple.
Angkor Wat is now Cambodia’s largest tourist attraction, with around 2 million visitors annually. Cambodia is the only country with a temple depicted on its flag.
Visiting Angkor Wat had been a long-standing desire of mine. It was more than just something I had read about or seen in pictures; it was an experience to witness it in person. I was amazed by the massive architecture built without any machine assistance from ancient times. I was overjoyed to have the opportunity to see it in person.
To visit Angkor Wat, there is an entrance ticket. You can get an Angkor Pass from the official ticket center. Guides and plenty of tuk-tuks are available for travel.
