    Page and John Paul Jones knew each other well at this point, they were two of the top session players in London, and had been for a few years. They played on many British hits together, and Jones was often the arranger on those sessions as well, so you’re not wrong, Jones was absolutely Zeppelin’s secret weapon - he plays most of the keyboards on the Zeppelin albums, and arranges the strings and orchestral parts, and wrote some of the iconic riffs to boot. His feel is part of why Bonham is so celebrated, he locks in with Bonham in an almost supernatural way. I had the distinct pleasure of seeing Jones play with Dave Grohl, and you could see how utterly thrilled Grohl was, because Jones made him sound incredible on the drums, better than he actually is, which I don’t say lightly. Oh, and, if you haven’t seen Andre 3000 play Jimi Hendrix in All Is By My Side, you absolutely must, it’s one of the best music biopics imo, written and directed by the guy who wrote 12 Years a Slave. Andre is incredible in it, he really captures Hendrix’s essence.

    They all say the same thing. Each band member says that the very first time they actually played together ..they started playing an old Yardbirds jam..Train Kept a Rollin' and after five seconds they all stopped...and each one was astonished ..scared a little ...amazed . At their sound together Bass Keyboard artist Jones and Drummer Bonham are the most incredible foundations for this juggernaught

    My first big rock concert was Jimmy Page and the Yardbirds during their last tour. They did some of Led Zep I including, 'Dazed and Confused' and 'How Many More Times.' It was blisteringly loud and crazily exciting. When Led Zep I came out, we were staggered.

    John Bonham and Robert Plant were barely 20 when this album was recorded. John Paul Jones and Jimmy Page, who were not much older, already had careers as in-demand session musicians in London behind them. Page had also been part of The Yardbirds, an influential 60's band. The 4 of them joined together was magic. The members have said the first time they rehearsed together - they knew instantly it was something very powerful. And it still is. Thank you for the thoughtful reaction. ☮

    I was in my late teens when this album exploded like an atomic bomb on the music scene. This is the 1st song of the 1st album. Nobody had done anything even close to it before. Nobody has done anything close to it since. Led Zeppelin has it's music influences, but the band is in it's own genre, alone, at the top forever.

    Just a little fun fact, while everyone who was anyone was trying to get into and play Woodstock in August of 1969 Led Zeppelin opted out.
    Their manager decided against it after Zeppelin played a number of festivals during that summer.
    Instead they played a small, 2,000 seat, venue on the boardwalk in Asbury Park, New Jersey called Convention Hall for a couple of nights that weekend.

    Yup, John Paul Jones is the quiet guy of the band, he like Jimmy page cut his teeth as a session man where you had to learn fast, and be top notch and versatile. He would often cross paths with Page at recording studios in the 60's, during the pre-Zepp days. Jones also has great arranging and producing skills, and he plays keyboards as well as bass guitar. A real asset to Zeppelin as they progressed into wider areas of music outside of their staple blues/ rock foundations.

    Read this: To quote from the special edition Guitar Legends Feb. of 2004, "To be fair, Led Zeppelin's greatness is genuinely complex. Like a Japanese puzzle box whose mysterious contents are revealed only after one acquires a deep knowledge of how each piece works together, the group defies easy analysis." This my seem a bit floral or snobby, but it really sums it up. I would listen to all in sequence, and have some companion books like Hammer of the Gods (I've read SEVERAL TIMES) to give you context and the sequence of underlying events.

    You hit the nail on the head with their chemistry. And it's interesting how they all formed. I believe Jimmy Page and John Paul Jones found Robert Plant and he turned them onto John Bonham and it just worked! Bonham is a big reason why I started playing drums. Keith Moon of the Who, and Neil Pert of Rush as well, but Bonham to be sure. One thing about this band that I always found amazing. On almost every song they've ever recorded, you could tell it was Zeppelin from the first measure, but no two songs sound the same. Not even close really.

    Jimmy Page wrote most of the lyrics on the first album, Plant only really got started writing on their second album.
    In my opinion John Paul Jones' bass lines on Led Zeppelin II are his best, especially on the blues laden "The Lemon Song".
    Alternately, if you would like to hear a top notch band with more up front bass, perhaps check out Yes. Songs like Roundabout, Yours Is No Disgrace, and Heart Of The Sunrise, are good introductory songs from that prog-rock enigma.

    • @jakeenan
      @jakeenan 2 роки тому

      Actually, Page didn't write all the lyrics on the first album. Plant, for contractual reasons, could not be named as a writer on the first album because the band would've got stiffed by the record label he was signed to and got out of when he joined Zep. Page spoke about it briefly in an interview a couple of years ago. He got credit years later though.

    • @paulmcintyre141
      @paulmcintyre141 2 роки тому +1

      @@jakeenan Plant's CBS contract turned out to be moot in the long run. My point was Plant didn't actually "write" anything original on LZ. Aside from rearranging already established lyrics from already previously established songs. Plant was always dropping in lyrics from other songs in their live performances. Scattering your set with someone else's lines, verses, or tongue in cheek alterations of said lyrics, doesn't constitute "writing", IMHO.
      Even though Page is guilty of this as well, he actually tried to change/update his parts to what he wanted LZ to sound like. As we all know Plant's first "real" song writing contribution came on LZ2 with WIASNB, and Thank You.

    Also, I have mentioned Rush to you Neil Peart from Rush along with John Bonham are two of the best drummers in rock. Rush were also inspired by Zeppelin when they first started out then went more Prog. I suggested some songs before but here are two more.
    Bastille Day and Tom Sawyer.
    Rush and Led Zeppelin are my two favourite bands. Cheers

      But David - It's really only the first TWO beats of triplets on Bonham's kick drum: Boom-boom... boom-boom... boom-boom-BAH - a snare hit completes the triplet! Bonzo had OTHERWORLDLY tone, power, and talent! I think it's STUNNING that TWO unknowns like Robert Plant and John Bonham were laboring along in relative obscurity and that two LONG-ESTABLISHED first-call London studio musicians like JP and JPJ were creative and resourceful enough to FIND them!!! And the rest, as they say, is HISTORY!!!

    Yes they knew they had lightning in a bottle when they first played together. All members are very good musicians. For their best performance in my opinion it has to be Dazed and Confused live at Madison Square Garden in 1973. This piece is many years old by this point. Apparently first played by Jimmy in its infancy when he was a teenager. Its 28 mins of music I have seen bo other band even come close to matching. The nearest I feel is Rush with a song called 2112. Their drummer, a man called Neil Pert who passed away sadly recently is also on the same level as Bonham. Rush are amazing too I highly recommend them. Along with and in no particular order are The Who, Qeen, AC-DC, Pink Floyd of course can't forget them. And if you want to try bands from Britain from the 90s which is when I got into music who are also first class musically I reccomend The Stone Roses, Blur, Oasis, Ocean Colour Scene and The Charlatans. Welcome to the club my friend enjoy yourself.

    On the subject of Good times bad times: have you heard Yoyoka, the Japanese girl who played the drum part at the age of EIGHT years old! She was amazing. A radio station played it for Robert Plant to react to. He loved it. She's 12 now and an outstanding drummer. World class musicians are lining up to collaborate with her. She recently covered Good times again with mussos from around the world for the David Z foundation (they raise money for music education scholarships).
    Here's a link to that performance. ua-cam.com/video/0b5hdiOjupo/v-deo.html

    Love Led Zep. That said. Early on. This album for sure. The lyrics are not theirs / originals. They reworked old blues tunes. From the 20s, 30s, & early 40s.

    Led Zeppelin is the greatest rock band of all time, imo. And your initial reaction sort of, kind of, covers it. So much power right out of the gate.
    But it's not really THAT. What it is, imo, is this. You can classify Led Zeppelin as a Blues Rock/Hard Rock/Folk Rock band first and foremost. it's a unique combination.
    Secondly, they perfected their own formula IMMEDIATELY. Like, before even recording. They perfected it. Which is why they put out 8 consistent albums over the course of a decade.

    thanks for the great reaction. I think you would like "Helter Skelter" by the Beatles. Or "Tomorrow Never Knows". Or "And Your Bird Can Sing". I'm off to listen to your Outkast suggestion.
