As a main Clove I actually kind do some bad smokes just for the sake of tricking the enemy and take benefit of an aggresive play (a little bit unorthodox not gonna lie but it works from time to time). For example, I combine the smoke in the middle and put one directly on the link between the L shaped boxes and the entrances to bath only if they is an enemy in bath confirmed to be playing more than 2 rounds there and compromise myself on the task to eliminate that guy. Sometimes people tends to forget that as an smoker your main role is to control as much as you can the enemy team to endanger your teammates. I hope this tip could also bring out more perspective on how to play more aggresively with Clove specifically because the vulnerability orb and the heal after a kill helps a ton on those situations but you have to play by the book as you said most of the time in order that sort of plays workouts.
I use default smokes every time. For example I may throw a smoke on mid and if we go the same way 2 rounds then I’ll use a smoke on a and then next round put one on b or something. Just to make them think I’m lurking or that we’re going to rotate. I always keep one smoke the same and move the other around or just save it
